Beautiful life [ビューティフルライフ] Rating: 8/10 (Bought & Watched) | Bijo ka Yajuu [美女か野獣] (Watched) if first episodes are anything to go by, then this one's gonna be irritating despite the good acting from furuyama masaharu. i just don't get why it is that a successful woman like nanako has to suffer those kinds of indignities? can't a woman simply be successful in work and personal life?
music's interesting.
nanako looks harder and older. she was tons lighter in yamato. | Brand [ブランド] Rating: 6/10 (Watched) good japanese dramas go one up by using its storyline to espouse a philosopy of life or dwell on issues like the meaning of life. the brand storyline is not original, but the drama seeks with each progressing episode to share a moral through its heroine. the summation of her lessons -- from learning to free herself from the thinking and expectations of others, to the meaning of what "branding" really is -- are offered in the good final episode. dramas may not offer practical solutions to life's problems, but hey, they do remind us it is important to dream. good acting from the three leads and supporting cast. imai miki's wonderfully warm smile. ichikawa somegoro's charisma grows with each episode. eisaku yoshida brings out the layers in his character as he goes from ex-boyfriend to renewing his love for midori to having it rejected again, and through it all, making his love and concern for midori startlingly clear. entertaining, good looking drama. |

short four-episode serial.
interesting for information on the differences between the two countries.
good acting from won bin and supporting cast.
fukada kyoko makes a giant effort to learn and speak korean in this one. she is to be praised for her efforts.
the koreans had a bigger part in this drama, probably because the reality is that koreans are not allowed travel to japan easily.
average storyline, love story. not much of a stretch for the cast. outstanding mainly for the collaborative effort.
won bin as ever a pleasure to watch. | Gift [ギフト] Rating: 8/10 (Bought & Watched) | Golden Bowl [ゴールデンボウル]

Sora Kara Furu Ichioku no Hoshi [空から降る一億の星] Rating: 9/10 (Watched) pretty damn awesome
it features the most mature performance from kimura takuya to date. he is so good one forgets he is kimura takuya. that's how good he is in this one.
also very good is igawa haruka as miwa: a stirring, layered, passionate performance.
overall, it probably was a good thing for the drama that fukatsu eri was cast as yuko. while predictable, this is not an easy role to play. this youthful stage veteran brings out the tragedy of being yuko.
some of the music reminded of that in taiyo wa shizumanai.
in fact, music in most of kimura's dramas is used to good effect in setting or enhancing the atmosphere and mood of the work, and so ups the overall quality of each drama.
the end theme piece of sora kara, slow, understated and sombre, brings out the sad sad aura of this tale.
even though the storyline is predictable, one is moved to tears in the final poignant scenes. much has to be said for the 10-episode build up leading to the climatic final episode.
a consistently good and intelligent script was also a big help. as were the silences and the colors used in the drama.

Yamato Nadeshiko [やまとなでしこ【大和撫子】] Rating: 9/10 (Bought & Watched) | Yan Papa [やんパパ] Rating: 5/10 (Watched) nagase sports a very interesting new look. he appears to have been working out something fierce. just look at his tai-chi skills in the drama, balance perfect, totally centred.
he is quite handsome in this drama, and when he's not shouting, does some pretty nifty acting as yusaku :) interesting.
the manga parts are effective in conveying yusaku's thoughts and intended actions, and in the process, add a supraordinary element to yusaku's efforts. very nicely done A++. the cute short ball of an anime which represents yusaku very gentle and sweet.
biggest problem with the drama is its overly preachy tone. makes yusaku out to be godlike, all knowing, which just doesn't go down well in the least. the same for goto maki's annoying one-san; annoying because she always seems to be in the right place at the right time to observe yusaku's great deeds and to smile or look on with ever growing approval. urggh! finally, the mushy parts just about kill the drama off. what a disappointment. this one could have been much better. | |
