| 1. | something underneath [Rating: 10/10] *contains spoiler, i think*
i'm not one to rate dramas based on my preference for certain good-looking actresses/actors, although the actor should be for his/her role believable. nanako plays someone who knows how to manipulate men with her feminine wiles, which she does so amazingly well. the actress might be good looking, but not dropdeadgorgeous, which is why it's important for her to always present herself as good-charactered and tender, ie acting cute, (which other idol-actresses do for every role.) which in this case befits her role.
i think this drama, on the surface, can be your usual idol-soap/feel-good romantic comedy, but there are many points abt the show that warrants more scrutiny. (i sometimes think one could even write a short analysis for it, like one does for literature or film, but maybe it's just me and my wonderful imagination.)
for example, i think that it's not that simple that nanako just wants to marry a rich man. in doing so, she's actually reaching for her dreams, or searching for her ideals. she just kinda mis-identified it to needing to find a rich man. this can be seen in the way she kept looking for someone richer even though she has already found the heir to a hospital-empire.
and nanako's character could always keep her emotions in control and well-hidden, so well that sometimes she even believes in her own lies.
the good friend of shinichi, masahiko, has a happy marriage that seems to be a lie. there were scenes where he cheats on his wife, yet then later he declares his love for his wife convincingly. it could be a representation for some modern asian marriages, where marriage is seen as a separate entity from love (the way it was long long time ago, when matchmaking was popular) where affairs are tolerated as long as a certain code is respected.
all these (there are more, but i wont waste it here) point to depth in the drama. this might be just standard for your art film, but for an asian drama, tis speaks volumes for the effort put in. but sadly, from other reviews i've read, all of it seems to be lost on most viewers.
well-paced to the end (perhaps the end came too sudden, but the story must end somehow), well directed, well acted, well scripted. what more could one ask for? | Reviewed by zooone on 17 April 2004 | 2. | Sorry but i don't it. [Rating: 2/10] I'm probably the only one in the world who doesn't like this show.
It's just too fake for my taste. I forced myself through the whole thing just to see if they were going to use that typically corny Japan dorama ending, and what do ya know I was right. I mean give me a break the man gets hit in the head with a wooden drawer and gets knocked out and has to go to the hospital right on her wedding day. Who in the world get hospitalized by wooden drawers, couldn't they have come up with something a little more believable than that. I just don't buy it, its all too fake, that whole ten years later and everyone's all happy and living in New York bull, it's like oh you know what we've reached the 11th episode better make up some happy ending so we can all get paid and go home. It's probably another reason why i'm starting to really dislike Japan dramas. They're all so artificial, they feel so packaged. Everything J-Dorama always has to come to nice clean ending by the 11th or 12th episode. With the exception of a few that I really like such as "Million Stars Falling from the Sky " or " Love Complex" but most J-doramas just feel so fake. I prefer Korean or Chinese dramas more, they end when they wanna end. There are no limits to lengths of their story, which is the way i think all dramas should be. Anyways I know most people will not agree with my review but thats how I feel. Theres nothing real in this show, its all a standard packaged love story. | Reviewed by Kaze on 7 December 2003 | 3. | beautiful... [Rating: 10/10] i simply loved this drama. this will be my attempt to explain why Ousuke went what he went through for Sakurako ...
as told earlier in the series, Sakurako looks exactly like the girl that Ousuke was dating back at MIT. she left him because he focused on his studies too much. left in despair and with his father's passing, he returns to japan to run his father's fish shop.
one night at a gokon with his friends, on his way out, he spots Sakurako who he thought was the girl that dumped him back in Boston. that was enough for him to stay. the fact he had the horse racing owner's pin was purely coincidental (i admit a little too good to be true, but still ...). although she's totally out for his money ... he believes that the heart is the most important thing when looking for another 'soulmate.' eventually, his mild-manner, innocent, and sometimes naive self somehow rubs off on Sakurako who realizes that there are other things more important than money when it comes to looking for love. it's during that process that everyone falls in love with this drama.
matsushima plays that spoiled girl role excellentlly. just as tsusumu plays his naive role wonderfully. tied in with the great theme song ... Everything by Misia ... it became a fan-favorite by many viewers.
i love that song Everything. great song for a great drama. | Reviewed by jpnallbuzzedsaw on 15 June 2002 | 4. | Yamato Nadeshiko -> Good Dorama [Rating: 7/10] Seeing Nanako in this dorama is really interesting, her role as Jinno Sakurako, a materialistic woman who wanna married a very rich man so she could never live in poverty again. She played this character really good, the first time i see her with her short haircut. Such character usually hate by most people, well i don't really like the character either, but this dorama with Nanako's playing made the character so people didn't just hate her, but understand her. The maturity of the characters, especially the main characters (Sakurako & Osuke) are the best part in this dorama. But despite of my likeness of this dorama there are still some points in this dorama that just didn't match my interested point. So i couldn't really said i really like this dorama or couldn't really made it my fave. It might be a very good dorama, it's just i don't really like it that much... | Reviewed by HimuraGirl on 29 August 2002 | 5. | one word: GREAT!! i liked it right away, from episode 1! im a girl yet, im Nanako fan! she is great! i cannot imagine anyone else who would play the role of sakurako better than her! i couldnt hate her at all, even when she was treating Osuke badly, coz the show explained why is she being so into money and rich guys! the show shows that behind that facade, there was actually a pure and kind person. Nanako was so cute and classy!
Osuke was so natural and his acting was Superb! i was almost believing that he was not acting and this is his genuine personality!
all other characters played really well! the OST was great and the theme song "Everything" by Misia really suits this drama!

EDIT: Great series and really funny like i said with a great supporting cast, i didnt get all teary eyed like i did with majou no jouken (thats a real killer) i wasnt too keen on the ending even though it was good and i did like it, it was played out a bit too quick and not dramatic enough for my liking, excellent acting once again from EVERYBODY who appeared, more like 8.8 that just a plain 8, good stuff but no tear jerker like majo no jouken. Great music too EVERYTHING is an amazing tune and up there with my favourites. | Reviewed by Kitchen on 29 August 2005 | 7. | It bothered me [Rating: 1/10] Most of my friends loved this one, but i don't understand why even though they explain it to me. It seems like they "fell in love" for merely materialistic reasons--she for him because she thought he was rich, and he for her because she looks like Matsushima Nanako. So it was difficult for me to respect either of the characters or appreciate what they were going through. The woman treats the man terribly, enough to make any sane person quickly abandon the idea, but he continues to pursue her and she continues to reject him... Predictably, in the end they marry and live happily ever after. But, if so many people like it, it must be good; it's just beyond me. | Reviewed by kumonryu on 19 November 2001 | 8. | a pleasant diversion at times [Rating: 7/10] not a bad drama but it took me quite a while to get into it...i left it on the shelf for a long time after the first episode and then finally proceeded to finish watching it much, much later. the character of jinno sakurako is the ultimate gold digger....i mean the ultimate....she's plays fools like michael jordan...she punks 'em. i won't give this a 10 as many did...i think that's being too generous....the ending was very conventional as well. fun to watch but i wouldn't call the entire work exceptional...the one thing i did enjoy was the healthy dose of comedy which i found helped carry the show more than the purposeful romance at times. | Reviewed by Tu_triky on 31 May 2005 | 9. | Money really isn't everything... [Rating: 10/10] First of all I'd like to say kudos to Matsushima Nanako in Yamato Nadeshiko. She acted brilliantly as the poor girl determined to find riches through any means necessary. Also, the subtle feelings her character had for poor Osuke were expressed brilliantly as well. The main themes of the show is that money can't buy everything, especially the one and only most important thing in one's life, true love and happiness. You can see throughout that out of all the beautiful items and clothes her fiance gave her, her most treasured item was the cheap and burnt chameleon Osuke gave her. Very nice ending to an excellent drama. Highly recommended. | Reviewed by DragonSpirit164 on 7 January 2004 | 10. | Nanako at her best [Rating: 9/10] Nanako really fit the role to a T on this one. I can think of no better person to portray the character other than her. The drama needed a strong character to keep it interesting, because the story is at best average, and she did such a great job of bringing out all the traits a gold digger would possess. There are also plenty of touching scenes, but I really think it's the acting that really made this drama shine. Plus the soundtrack really suits the drama as well. It's just a great drama, watch it! | Reviewed by Hiro Toyo on 4 December 2003 | 11. | very funny [Rating: 9/10] overall, i found this to be a very funny and light hearted. matsushima nanako portrayed sakurako beautifully, shallow on outside with hint of caring on inside. I never felt she was completely superfacial but always hiding her feelings. the whole cast was excellent and made me crack up frequently. the show never became too heavy, always lightening up the mood with comic relief.
only complaint is the ending, i felt really bad for yada akiko, maybe she'll marry the rich guy and find happiness ^^ | Reviewed by kikkuman on 3 October 2004 | 12. | Live a life with no regrets [Rating: 10/10] This drama was so funny and touching. It teaches us a lot about the regrets that we have in life, but when we have the chance to love someone, never squander that chance otherwise it might become a regret in our own life. The would haves, could haves, and the should haves. This drama teaches us not to have that and to go after the things we want whether we succeed or not, but the fact of the matter is, that we live a life without regret. That is so poignant in this story and I loved it for that. | Reviewed by Golfguy45 on 20 April 2003 | 13. | Great series. Funny and touching series. The story is kind of predictable, but great acting by the whole cast. Definetely recommend it.
I was surprised though, that I still don't like Misia after this... It's very rare for me that a dorama ballad doesn't grow on me. Then somewhere between episode 8 and 9 I realized that I had fallen madly in love with her without even realising it.
When you care that deeply for a fictional character, it's already passed the stage of an ordinary romantic comedy and becomes something more.

| 1. | Comments by occultangle [Rating: 6/10] This definitely qualifies as one of the most over-rated dramas of all time. And the problem is basically all with Matsushima Nanako, but it's not really her fault, I blame whoever wrote such a ridiculously fake character. They want to portray a story about learning that love is more important than money, and while I certainly have no problems with the attempt to teach important lessons in a drama, this is kindergarten level morality. I'm sorry but I am not emotionally moved by someone's transformation from an exaggerated caricature of a person with issues into an average human being, and I was agitated that the main male lead wouldn't "settle" for the totally decent girl Wakaba. I am rather surprised that people would feel any differently than me, and that this show would have been such a success.
Actually, all of this would have worked better as a comedy, and when this series focuses in that direction it actually is pretty good, but sadly the romance is the main focus, to huge detriment. | 2. | Comments by donna8157 [Rating: 8/10] A good show that exaggerates to some degree the stereotypical beautiful woman who wants to marry into the rich. It started off interesting, but as it moved along, Jinno Sakurako's character and her superficiality began to grate on my nerves. There was no denying however that Matsushima Nanako did a wonderful job portraying this character, it seemed very natural and not forced. Tsutumi Shinichi also did a good job of playing Osuke, the kind-hearted but penniless fish salesman. I've only seen him in "Good Luck!" so it was quite a nice change to actually see some emotion in his face.
I thought that the drama really picked up towards the end when you could see a change in Sakurako's character. It really changed your outlook on her. Anyway, this was a fun and entertaining drama to watch and I would recommend it to everyone, especially Matsushima Nanako's fans. She really shines in this series. | 3. | Comments by Akiiness [Rating: 8/10] Personally, I really liked it in the end. I have to admit the beginning was really slow and boring. Everything was just beyond fake to the point where it kind of got annoying. And things like this drama I'd usually cast aside and label it horrible. But trust me, it picks up after. It's nothing like I've seen before... like Nanako's character, for example. She is one of the fakest & shallowest character you'll probably ever meet... those that you call bitches. This drama might seem a little exaggerated, but it's a good wake up call to unrealistic girls who are still out there. I ended up liking Nanako's character, despite her personality... it's a pretty dimensional character, though you'll probably never believe someone like that is out there. And the other casts itself were A++. Anyway, it's definitely not the best thing I've ever watched, but it's not a waste of your time either. :) | 4. | Comments by minochi99 [Rating: 9/10] One of the best endings ever! I love the music here, esp the song Everything by Misia. A sweet story of a woman who wants nothing more than to marry a super duper rich guy. This has to be one of Nanako's strongest roles. Never knew she can play such a funny and innocent character. She really shone in this drama, no doubt showing why she is one of the best jdorama queens. Seeing her maturation and her slowly developing love for Shinichi's character was worth it. People can change, and for the better no less. A very strong supporting cast that was attractive as well. Yada Akiko was beautiful here :-) Felt sorry for her that she didn't end up with the man she loves. A really great drama that I can watch again every now and then. Highly recommended! | 5. | Comments by ginger ale [Rating: 8/10] This jdorama should have been titled the Perfect Man, after all Sakurako was in search of the perfect husband.Nanako Matushima must really be Japan's jdorama queen, here she is all charm and smiles as the gutsy flight attendant out to get the richest man around as her husband. I still can't get over the nerdy character of Shinichi Tsutsumi as the brilliant academic Osuke Nakahara, its a long way from New York to a fish stand in Tokyo. Its really Akiko Yada as the other flight attendant who is a good judge of character falling for the man behind the mask.Love the clothes of the characters in the drama. The ending is quiet predictable. | 6. | Comments by Sorata [Rating: 8/10] I was really involved while watching this dorama, i donLt remeber ho wmany times i call Sakurako b****, but even with her trying her best to make us hate her i just couldnLt, i was always thinking she had some sort of reason in her actions and her actions in the end were really cute. I found the male lead really boring so it kill a lot of the fun to me. But the comedy moments with Kazuya were gold, specialy when he tried to kill Hanabusa in SakumaLs house, i laugh really hard.
A very cool dorama with a good pace, Matsushima Nanako is so cute here that you almost forget how much of a b**** Sakurako is lol. | 7. | Comments by blakmetalik [Rating: 9/10] This show is really something. It had me laughing, especially when Tsutsumi Shinichi's character Osuke and his friends would get together. Matsushima Nanako did an excellent job. But honestly, I could not believe her character, Sakurako, sometimes! My goodness, there were moments I could just kick her. It was, however, wonderful to see her eventual transformation, or rather her acceptance of her true feelings. Osuke and Higashijujou (played by Azuma Mikihisa) are just too good to be true, aren't they? At any rate, I really enjoyed the comedy, the acting, and of course, the romance. Definitely recommended. | 8. | Comments by jdfan [Rating: 10/10] A fun-to-watch drama in a relaxing pace. And not to forget the beautiful theme song by Misia. Matsushima Nanako is fun to watch as a head-strong air-stewardess whose life philosophy is not necessarily correct. A strong supporting cast of Nishimura Masahiko as Osuke's true-blue friend. NICE! The script is well-written, the story flows well and there are some parts that are really very funny! Nanako's performance was great even batter than GTO. A very watchable drama that leaves you with a warm feeling afterwards. | 9. | Comments by Angry Machines [Rating: 7/10] I don't know why but I've always thought that Nanako is really mean in real-life, she just looks like it. Shinichi crying like a baby? com'n, I liked this guy because of his role in Good luck, and I truly lost dude-respect for him when I was him acting like a high-schooler here, it was just ugly u know. Yamato Nadeshiko is about love, destined, nurtured, and forbidden. A story that touched my heart, and made me yearn to have a woman by my side as well. This series is very well made, though even at the end I didn't think that Sakurako was worth it, at least she came to the proper realization about how things should be. It lost points for over using the same song. Otherwise, and A series. | 11. | Comments by esc507 [Rating: 8/10] Tsutsumi Shinichi...is just so cool. It was funny when he was spacing out in various parts of the show. Matsushima Nanako's character bugged me in some ways. I mean, how can you fall in love with a person in one second, and dump him the next? That is just so wrong. Well, the drama was quite interesting all in all despite the ironic and sarcastic Jinno. Almost every episode will leave you hanging and wanting to watch the next. | 12. | Comments by andrewujin [Rating: 10/10] this drama is fantastic. it started out really funny with nanako and the guy "osuke"... and what attracts me to this drama the most is that both of them learn a lot about living from each other. and one a weak and has no courage, another a super confident and strong willed. and both of them make a good pair. i love each episode especially the last episode in the last part...

Alot of people can relate to the story dealing with poverty or leaving them psychologically traumatized. But this story shows that there's more into life than money or fortune and that money cant buy happiness. | 20. | Comments by Tanchel [Rating: 5/10] This is the second drama that I have watched in its entirety. I liked some of the characters. However, I do have to admit that it was hard to get thru all episodes. Sakurako to me was a very selfish and vain person. She was perfect outwardly. But inside she was very flawed. The actress who play Sakurako did a very good job. | 21. | Comments by majinbads [Rating: 10/10] Very enjoyable romantic comedy. Features a handful of beauties. Watch out for Akiko Yada, she outshines Nanako Matsushima. Damnnnnnn goooooooooood performance by Nanako too. An eye candy for guys. Guys you must not miss this. If youre rich, beware. Your beautiful girl is there cause theyre just like Sakurako in this dorama:-) | 22. | Comments by Shindou [Rating: 7/10] Shinichi and Nanako certainly make an awkward pair, haha ^_^ Anyhow, Nanako's performance was hilarious as an airline stewardess and shows off her great acting ability. Shinichi plays a somewhat convincing math genius though I like his performance in Good Luck!! more. All in all, a pretty entertaining jdorama to watch. | 23. | Comments by aleen84 [Rating: 8/10] Nanako did a very good job in this drama. Although I don't think this drama is very good, I must say that ratings will based on the ending of a dorama. And I just love the ending of Yamato Nadeshiko. Especially the part when they're together at last, hanging out, eating hotdogs do shoppings...how I hope to be like them!! | 24. | Comments by ml_desu [Rating: 9/10] my all time favourite. something about the music, the very good acting, the good script, and a wonderfully warm and blur nakahara osuke with his heart always ALWAYS in the right place, all coming together to create a kind of ambience piece ... for eg. u think of the music and wow! the images just come floating back ... | 25. | Comments by ilovetakuya [Rating: 9/10] Loved this drama. The theme song, MISIA's Everything, is awesome. Matsushima Nanako is beautiful. Though I'm a girl, I fell in love with Nanako. I loved all the supporting castl. The ending was very good as well. This drama made me happy everytime I watched it.
I felt really sorry for Higashijujo Tsukasa though... | 26. | Comments by z123_us [Rating: 8/10] the more i see of nanako ... the more i like her, good drama, light hearted fun type with a romance background. i enjoyed it a lot, once again ... it picked a lot of pace after the first 3,4 eps. i also like Tsutsumi Shinichi, saw him a very different funny role, very different from good luck. recommended to be seen. | 27. | Comments by pangit [Rating: 10/10] this has got to be the best drama i've seen so far. very touching romantic comedy. and the main guy is someone that a lot of guys can relate to...or maybe its just me. whatever...this is a MUST SEE because its really good and becuase it has Matsushima Nanako who is absoluuuuuuuutly beautiful!!!! | 28. | Comments by blaupunkt [Rating: 10/10] another drama making me crazy~ i like the theme song too,, perfectly fits in the storyline n plot, good music coordination and the actors itself.. gee, another drama i give rate of 10, hahaah, maybe bcoz i judge the rate by the drama style that i like the most~ | 29. | Comments by :::hALuCin8::: [Rating: 10/10] A romantic comedy of love, money, lies, betrayal, and romance. Nanako's character was a materialistic, gold-digging b**ch who treated Osuke like sh*t. Felt sorry for the guy most of the time. But became interesting as it reaches the end..which is the best part! | 30. | Comments by eltinator [Rating: 10/10] A brilliant plot and a great cast led by Matsushima Nanako. This drama was so funny and serious at important times. Definately one for the ages. Yada Akiko played a good supporting act and as boring as Tsutsumi Shinichi is, he was pretty descent in this one. |

1. | seles not Nanako's best drama but definitely ranked within the top five. The story is funny and interesting. well, Sakurako is materalistic and you may not agree with her value but so what....you just can't hate this woman. She is a real character and so charming. I am really impressed by Nanako's performance, this role is very different from your previous roles she played but yet she handled it soooo well. She is a very talentd actress and make u think that Nanako = sakurako. Nanako just have the ability to make a difference to any drama. | 2. | minochi99 Another great series which I enjoyed. Tsutsumi and Nanako were wonderful as always. The theme was cool and seeing the maturation of Nanako's character was realistic and satisfying. I think outside of GTO, this was one of Nanako's cutest character. She looked elegant and beautiful at the same time. Enjoyed the ending and how the story wrapped itself up. | 3. | iluvhyde I seriously regretted not buying this show sooner when a sales gal recommended this to me. I bought Oyaji instead (and regretted). This is one of the most amazing show! Great story and actors. Nanako Matsushima and Tsutsumi Shinichi pulled together such unbelieveble scenes. Superbly heart warming. | 4. | 206 At first you can really hate that Sakurako and wait each episode to see her next evil and then you follow her through why she finally comes around to Osuke. Wakabe is so cute that I wanted to kick Osuke in the oshirii too. I really enjoyed the series and so far I rate it the best one. | 5. | venusling I like Nanako in this drama! She's look really gorgous! I laugh a lot because of her funny acting. I value the storyline as well. That's someting we can learn from this drama. I like the theme song Everything that suit this drama really well and memorable. Recommended series! | 6. | Vanessa Very honest and not forced at all. I felt this dorama had one of the very best endings, and it wasn't rushed and it was well deserved. The dialog is cheap, but the incidents the leading lady gets into is unforgettable and keeps you watching. | 7. | darknitelight It can be quite hilarious at times, but quite sad at others. I do feel sorry for Wakaba-chan in this show, but then again all characters suffer some dire fate. Then you look at Kasuya and he deserves to suffer every bit...hahaha. | 8. | aitri Nanako really shines in this dorama, even if she plays the epitomy of a materialistic character. I really like the rest of the cast as well, and the story kept me extremely interested, full recommendations for this! | 9. | russia my all time favourite. fantastic script, funny and very timely comedy scenes, a fresh look at what we take for granted as the basis for marriage. and nanako with a super supporting cast. just watch it! | 10. | kook05 really, really good show... matsushima nanako looks soooo good in the show... always so immaculately dressed!!! acting from the 2 lead actors is simply fantastic... such a sweet and romantic show.... | 11. | thomas.k Superb! Matsushima Nanako and Tsutsumi Shinichi made a good couple in this drama. A material woman who meet a emotional guy.
