Love complex [ラブコンプレックス] Not your typical packaged Japan drama [Rating: 10/10] I watched this drama from a strictly artistic point of view, because i've studied cinematography and directing. Most people will probably not like this drama, because it's quiet odd. The story doesn't really make any sense, but i wasn't watching for the story. I give the director of this show a pat on the back for breaking the traditional J-drama mold, this is one of the few doramas I've ever seen that didn't feel packaged and artificial. The way this director composes his shots are truely cinematic. Most shots in this dorama are not story shots, they are more artistic and creative. It's hard to decribe unless you see it, a lot of dutch angled shots are used as apposed to your standard flat story shots. Meaning a lot of odd slanted angled shots instead of your standard balanced tripod shots. I also noticed the attempted use of slow motion in juxtapostion to speed up shots for style. not to mention the break from the traditional flat as a pancake TV series lighting. The director actually attempts to use shadowed three point and source silhouette lighting. And finally gotta give it him for boldly using all that new age music to liven up every scene. Anyways most people probably don't care about any of the stuff that I just mentioned but for those who do check this drama out gauranteed it'll be like nothing you've ever seen before in terms of doramas. Finally i think this director is wasting his time doing doramas, he should be making his move into film, because thats where creativity actually counts. Hell he could be the next Wong Kar Wai | Yamato Nadeshiko [やまとなでしこ【大和撫子】] Sorry but i don't it. [Rating: 2/10] I'm probably the only one in the world who doesn't like this show.
It's just too fake for my taste. I forced myself through the whole thing just to see if they were going to use that typically corny Japan dorama ending, and what do ya know I was right. I mean give me a break the man gets hit in the head with a wooden drawer and gets knocked out and has to go to the hospital right on her wedding day. Who in the world get hospitalized by wooden drawers, couldn't they have come up with something a little more believable than that. I just don't buy it, its all too fake, that whole ten years later and everyone's all happy and living in New York bull, it's like oh you know what we've reached the 11th episode better make up some happy ending so we can all get paid and go home. It's probably another reason why i'm starting to really dislike Japan dramas. They're all so artificial, they feel so packaged. Everything J-Dorama always has to come to nice clean ending by the 11th or 12th episode. With the exception of a few that I really like such as "Million Stars Falling from the Sky " or " Love Complex" but most J-doramas just feel so fake. I prefer Korean or Chinese dramas more, they end when they wanna end. There are no limits to lengths of their story, which is the way i think all dramas should be. Anyways I know most people will not agree with my review but thats how I feel. Theres nothing real in this show, its all a standard packaged love story. |
