|---|
Sakaki "Tornado" Makio (Nagase Tomoya) is a tough 27-year-old high school drop-out. By academic standards, he's pretty dumb. His father decides to force Makio to return to high school to receive his diploma and he asks an old friend who happens to be the principal (Iwaki Koichi) of a nearby school to admit Makio. If Makio doesn't graduate, the position of boss will be given to his younger brother Mikio (Kikawada Masaya).
Furthermore, he must pose as a 17-year-old during school hours and in the presence of any classmates or teachers outside of school. If his cover is blown, it would be the end of his high school career as well as his hopes to become boss. Things start out rough and tough as Makio's violent temper is tested. I am embarrassed to count how many times I have watched this drama. It is just so, absolutely, brilliantly, excellent - words are failing me at this point. Nagase Tomoya is no doubt one of the most brilliant actors I have ever seen. I have no doubt that he is the Japanese equivalent of Johnny Depp when it comes to overacting, and pulling it off as excellent acting. I don't think anyone else could've played Sakaki Makio the way Nagase did.
The supporting cast did well, and the chemistry between the classmates of Class 3-A was excellent. I didn't really get the hints of possibly love between Sakaki and Minami, but I'll let that pass as a little bit of silliness in the show - which, at some points, can get rather endearingly silly. Of course, this is balanced by heartwarming scenes aiming to get the show's message across that 'school is great!' But it doesn't get overly preachy.
Definitely one of the best dramas in 2006 - no, in like, forever!! I thoroughly believe Nagase should've won a Best Actor award for this; he has totally surpassed himself. First of all, I want it known that I absolutely LOVE Nagase Tomoya, and therefore this entire review may be a bit biased when it comes to my continuous praise of his acting ability.
This drama was simplistic in its storyline and this aided in its effectiveness. Because the plot was simple, more effort was available to pour into the comic elements of the drama. This show was incredibly funny. Unlike Tiger & Dragon (Nagase's previous comedic drama), which has an adult humour undertone, My Boss My Hero was very slapstick in its blunt, in-your-face humour. Nagase's facial expressions in this drama were brilliant, and scored huge points in making me literally laugh out loud.
If you like comedy, Yakuza, and Nagase, this would be the perfect drama for you.
I was disappointed with the ending of the drama, and the "romance" between Makio and his 17-year-old schoolmate was annoying, but the show was still good. It was the BEST comedy drama I watched. Ever, in my life. It even surpassed Gokusen. :)) I decided that Yakuza are cool, wether its Yankumi or Makky. :)) Was that the correct spelling? I hope I didnt get it wrong, sakura-something.:)) TEGOOOOOOSHIIIII. TEGOSHIIIIIIII. TEGOSHIIIIIII. He's funny here. :))
And I was completely rolling on the floor laughing, ROFL. @-|, when I saw Tanaka Koki, the dude of KAT-TUN that looked like he was going to beat some one up, admiring, sewing and wearing pink just for Makky. :)) It made ma laugh, so much, I kept laughing until I fell asleep on my keyboard. Yes... Those were the days. :))
He really does cook, clean and sew. Ta-chan. He can do all those industrious stuff. Unlike me. :)) It made me smile that Tegoshi had a some person properly love him. In all his drama's, he didnt have a girl around his arm. :))
I feel sad for Makky though. :( He's going to go to another school. Though, I think I want another season. :))

this definitely beats every other school drama i've watched. it's hilarious and extremely entertaining, and even if a lot say that the middle part got a bit boring, i really didn't think so. :) the only problem i have with it is that the storyline is pretty overused. however, despite the resemblance in formula with say, gokusen, i think this one managed to pull it off the best. i say, it's all thanks to tomoya nagase's brilliant acting. he never failed to amaze me in every drama of his i've watched.

Not the greatest dorama with its rather ridiculous storyline and juvenile plots but entertaining nonetheless. Tomoya carries this dorama by providing much of the comic relief. Yuya and Koki however.....would've been better off if Koki passed on some of his aggressiveness to Yuya.....seems so ridiculously imbalanced as depicted. The rest of the cast was ok although there's definitely potential for improvement. My recommendation? I just re-watched this drama this week after first watching it maybe 8 years ago, and I must say it was better the second time around! This was one of my very first J Drama's that I watched, so I was a newbie back then. Now a seasoned J Drama addict, I appreciate this simple and feel good story that has a sweetness to it that many newer J dramas are lacking.

it's so touching and makes u think that you should treasure ur youth when life is still pure and simple.

The story is simple but profound.
It's a drama for a wide range of audiences - from teenagers to the economically well-established.
Teenagers and the 20s may love this drama for its humor and madness.
Grown-ups in the 30s may find this drama greatest for its underlying virtues of humanity - energy and high spirit, love and friendship, sincerity and togetherness....

Had watched until eps. 3 and continuing. Even the background of Tomoya's (Makio-san) is Yakuza but most of story abt his daily life as "the oldest " High School Student which full of funny crazy things. So far so good so cool so funny so crazy...

I have to admit, I was not all that impressed with the show when I saw the first episode. The storyline was somewhat attention grabbing because it dealt with a yakuza leader who has to go back to high school to get his diploma. However, as I continued the series I thought it was quite enjoyable and fun to watch off and on. The episodes move in a progressive manner and happen to focus on different aspects of high school life from exams to sports days and even matters of love.
Nagase Tomoya is able to pull off the part of a commanding and fearsome leader in a yakuza group by night and still look like a fumbling and somewhat timid high school student in the daytime. I found this factor to be one of the highlights of the series. In school, Makio (Nagase) makes friends with another boy who he saves from being bullied and a girl named Hikari. Through their help and the teacher's confidence in him, he's able to overcome many of the obstacles he has to face day to day. This was an entertaining drama although some parts seemed to drag on a little too long. The weakest point in this drama for me was the romance. I thought it was odd for a 27 year old yakuza guy to fall head over heels for a high school student. That's just me I think. Took me awhile to decide to review this but it was because I was a little sour about the ending of the series last week.
To start: Excellent drama, had hilarious, stupid, unpredictable, touching moments all over it. The characters are very endearing not to mention the style fitting the story very well.
The story may sound very ridiculous to start with but does convey a good message within it. It is�@however a comedy so keep that in mind.
Nagase Tomoya proves that he is a very versatile actor yet again (and damn is it me or is he getting hotter and hotter when he doesn`t have the Rambo hairstyle (which he just got back again)) along with a fresh cast of young actors that, well, made it interesting. XD

I don't usually watch comedy dramas, because even if they are funny (and they usually aren't) they lose their humor as they progress, and end up failing at both comedy and drama. After hearing how funny My Boss My Hero was, I finally broke down and watched it. I found it to live up to it's reputation and be the first drama I actually found funny. But they really messed something up here, and it wasn't the serious parts which were surprisingly decent, I don't know what happened, if they changed directors or writers or something, but at exactly episode six it becomes totally stupid, the whole style of humor changes to retarded absurdity, the kind of comedy only a child could find funny. This drama drew me in from the first episode, and that alone is why it was one of the more successful dramas this season - the fact that it made me want to continue watching. The plot may be silly, the chaarcters and situations over the top, but this drama is charming in the fact that it doesn't take itself too seriously and doesn't hide the fact that it knows it is meant to be silly. Nagase is a good comic actor, and Koki from KAT-TUN as his underling is a rough gem - funny guy in the making. The school kids are not as irritating as say, those from Gachibaka or DanDori, and I had always like Aragaki Yu. This drama was good. Nagase Tomoya who plays Makky was a little too over the top sometimes, and made it hard to take some parts seriously. I liked Tanaka Koki, who plays Kazu, character... he was funny and i felt sorry for him sometimes. Tegoshi Yuya, played Makky's first friend Sakura, was a good actor - but he was kinda weird to me... The teacher Minami and female classmate Hikari didn't have good characters; in both love scenarios, it would have been all wrong for Makky.
My favorite character would be Mikky, Makky's younger brother, played by Kikawada Masaya. He was smart, and basically had what Makky was missing. He played a good "nice" but in a way "sinister" character. I would like to see more of his stuff.
I like the drama because it was fun.

I just finished watching this two days ago and it was great! The leading character played by Nagase Tomoya was great (though slightly unrealistic) and he had the most hilarious facial expressions throughout the series. The supporting male character played by Tegoshi Yuya was absolutely adorable. The slight romantic aspect of the drama didn't make me feel nauseous so I applaud that and I admit a big bonus was how it involved a fictional crime organisation - and I know how much I love those. It's pretty action packed and with lots of humor so it's rather well-balanced. Nagase was absolutely hillarious!!! And he was also cute, cool and hard as nails all at the same time!
There was not one character that I did not like in this drama.
A lot of people did not like Sakurakouji but I thought he was sweet and unselfish and I just wanna give him a hug.
Nagase's relationship with Hikari was adorable! I LOVED his stutter... and the lumber jack! ... Bless him XD
I definitely recommend this dorama to anyone who likes light-hearted, fun, comedies.

This dorama has become one of my favourite one. It's got everything you wish for. It's really funny, heart-warming, sad, happy, romance involving... You name it.
I really like the ending song too, which is sung by the mainperson in this series, Nagase Tomoya from TOKIO. It was a good choice for the series..
However, I strongly recommend this dorama to everyone. The ending was totally unexpected and that made it so good and awesome. First you get shocked and then afterwards, you notice yourself sitting in front of the screen with a big smile and singing along the song. First of all, this show's simply HILARIOUS. Forget the other crap, if you wanna laugh and not really have to think to much, this is the one to watch. I wasn't going to watch this, but after it got decent ratings at the start i thought there must be something about it so i started to watch and began to love it! I think it's secret relies in it's character's warm-hartedness and freshness of the script. Nagase Tomoya perfectly combines his "konoyarou" yakusa character with his stumbling high schooler, and ive fallen for yui after when she said "issho ni kaerou?" With such an outrageously absurd premise, I honestly only expected this to be a funny comedy (which it was; heck, it was even hilarious in many scenes!); what I didn't expect was that it could end up being so deep and well written! Obviously goes without saying that the audience shouldn't expect any of the storyline to make any sense but given that, the selection for the cast could've been improved on. Such a heartwarming Dorama. I'm in my graduation time now and this was like the "ultimate dorama" now. Not only that I reflected my own high school life, but I actually felt the spirit of it in the Dorama. I felt joy while seeing Makio getting the puddings, I fell in love with U-u-umemurasan, I felt the sadness he did. Every episode was terrifically hilarious beacuse well over-acted. Nagase Tomoya plays a soon-to-be Yakuza leader...that is, only unless he graduates from high school. So this 28-year-old gets enrolled in a high school and though reluctant and defiant at first, he finds himself making friends, falling in love, and *gasp* studying.

This is by far the most funny dorama i watched, like i say all the time Nagase Tomoya was born to play funny Yakuza parts, he just do it better than anyone else(watch Tiger&Dragon as well).
But if you like the Yakuza kind of comedy(which i like), you will love this dorama. All the cast was good but Tomoya�Ls antics and facial expressions overshadow all their performances lol. I can not begin to explain why I love this series so much. All o fthe characters are amazing, and Tomoya really pulled off Makio. This series made me laugh with the hilarious storylines... I mean, come on, the first episode alone was about Makio finding out how to get the school's famous pudding, which there is only a limited amount of. A good mix of laughter and tears (both from laughing too much and being touched:'( ) The story centres around how Maki, the to-be head of a gang, is sent back to high school and the way he copes with high-school life, love, friendship and being torn when he has to choose between his high school life and his real life. Really Funny! And nice acting by all the JE members... Nagase, Tegoshi and specially Koki. (i never imagined him playing those kind of "stupid" char.). Good plot, this series is one of the best comedians doramas i've seen so far. This is magic. When you can make this, a drama that only contains stupidness and jokes to still have a meaning. Seriously I even started to cry in some scenes just because I was so touched by the message and the emotions. And thats gold to me when you mix this overwhelming comedy (which FYI made me fall of my chair of laughter) with a touching message. The first dorama that made me laugh! I used to smile watching dorama like GTO live etc... but My Boss is just funny, so funny! purin fighting is the best part of the dorama I think. The way Nagase talks in it is just so great so maybe I laughed so much because I speak japanese. A very funny yet touching drama. Nagase's acting is, once again, awesome in it. One can definitely 'get' something after watching this drama. It's not just a plain comedy. It definitely goes deeper than that. This is surely a drama that one can savour for more than once!

This drama was light and entertaining. It was fun to watch but wasn't anything special. The storyline could have been much more, the students could have been explored much more, the ending could have been more dramatic, but it wasn't. The funniest the silliest and moving jdorama i've watched. Tomoya Nagase is awesome as the yakuza heir turned student. He was so funny and sexy. Koki Tanaka of Kat-tun was a revelation as an actor he can sing and act and dance.NewS Tegoshi Yuya can act but he is prettier than the girls in the series so that kinda disoriented me. After first episode thought this was almost complete bs... It's one of those way over the top comedies that are not to be taken too seriously. Despite that there's also enjoyable and light drama included in this pretty crazy comedy. At times choberibad and stupid, but still its somehow enjoyable to watch and pretty funny, though didn't find it as fun myself as some others. |

Although, the series has just started. The ratings for the first episode is 19% That's even more than Nobuta wo Produce :O The storyline is similar to the Korean MBMH, but I'm sure that many parts will be different, the korean one was a bit gory.
