Freeter, Ie o Kau. [フリーター、家を買う。] Great characters and plot. Watch it! [Rating: 9/10] I have never seen a more dysfunctional-functional father-son relationship. It's pretty interesting, really. That aside, this dorama is worth watching. There's a good, steady plot going on with commendable acting and well-paced character growth. I think that they could have fleshed out Karina's character slightly more, but other than that I'd recommend watching this.
Just the characters alone are worth the watch, I think. I love the support cast! Besides his family members, Ninomiya's construction crew members are great too.
But of course, as with all such doramas, the atmosphere can get a little dark and gloomy. If you can't stand such stuff then perhaps it's not for you.
Manhattan Love Story [マンハッタン ラブストーリー] Mixed feelings [Rating: ?/10] Matsuoka was pretty cute as the main character here, but otherwise I'm not entirely sure what I was watching. It isn't what I expected it to be at all, what with its five million relationship twists and weird characters. It's an okay watch that boasts some funny moments and a likeable central character, but don't expect too much plot or meaning out of this.
My Boss, My Hero [マイボスマイヒロ] Endearing & hilarious [Rating: 9/10] I enjoyed this dorama - it's quite heartwarming, extremely hilarious, and Nagase is really great here. I love how it's not a dorama created solely for the sake of fans - there's actually a plot going on, it doesn't end in typical fairytale fashion, and most of all it's endearing.
Ryusei no Kizuna [流星の絆] Worth watching [Rating: 9/10] I liked this dorama. It's pretty interesting, and the little "stories" made up by the siblings trio in between may seem a little pointless and filler-ish to the main plot, but they ARE hilarious and somewhat related to the larger story at hand.
I think the acting for this dorama was pretty good. I loved all the hilarious bits of the eldest brother being a dork or just too weird for his siblings. They are hilarious lmao.
Despite all the laughs, there's always a darker looming plot lurking in the background of course, and I think the contrast is pretty nicely done. Despite their ridiculous ideas and crazy antics, the three siblings remain united in their search for their parents' murderer.
Yamada Taro Monogatari [山田太郎ものがたり] Cute & light-hearted [Rating: 7/10] This show was my first introduction to a non-serious dorama. Needless to say, I was somewhat thrown off balance. It took me awhile to get used to the typical over-the-top school scenes. But I recovered.
Aside from the above, which took some getting used to, this is a fairly light-hearted series that's easy and relatively fun to watch. It's evidently not plot-heavy, but the plot is sufficient for such a genre IMO. If you're into school doramas or don't mind them, then go ahead and watch this. In any case, I think Ninomiya was cute enough as his character to sustain my interest. Lol.
Yasuko to Kenji [ヤスコとケンジ] Over-the top, but hilarious and endearing [Rating: 8/10] I enjoyed this dorama. The first episode alone was hilarious enough to hook me in LOL. But there ARE quite a few over-the-top moments, since this is a manga-to-screen adaptation and mangas are frequently this way, so you may want to avoid it if you can't stand such stuff.
That aside, Matsuoka has absolutely hilarious expressions. I spent an inordinate amount of time just laughing at him lmao. Tabe Mikako as his sister has a personality pretty reminiscent of her role in Yamada Taro Monogatari. I think she's pretty cute. I don't get the hype about her love interest, though. He's not a particularly multi-dimensional character.
Matsuoka's character, Oki Kenji, goes through some character growth as he learns more about caring for people and letting go. I think Matsuoka did a good job in his role. At the end of the day, he can be an awfully obnoxious and controlling elder brother but you just can't help but like his endearing personality.
