Beautiful life [ビューティフルライフ] Rating: 9/10 (Watched) Really heart wrenching at times! Takuya is the best!!! And I definitely loved the lead actress. :) | Densha Otoko [電車男] Rating: 9/10 (Watched) My first Japanese drama. Incredibly adorable, although slightly cheesy show - very well acted and just cute! | Gokusen [ごくせん] Rating: 7/10 (Watched) Gokusen is almost a tried and true formula by the time it was released. Because of this, the uniqueness of some of the plot and situation is lost. But it is still essentially a good program and had a good message to tell. At times, the clash between drama and comedy in the show gets a little campy and contrived. But, Nakama Yukie (Yankumi) and Waki Tomohiro's (Kuma) performances were most notable. Unfortunately, I felt Matsumoto Jun's performance was a little disappointing! |
Gokusen Season 2 [ごくせん2] Rating: 7/10 (Watched) What can I say? While it's only a rehash of the first Gokusen, the series still maintained a sort of fresh air about it. While I'm not a big fan of boy band acting the members of KAT-TUN who played the roles turned out so really nice performances at the end. If there isn't a Gokusen 3 this would be a wonderful ending to the series! | GTO [麻辣教師] Rating: 10/10 I was a little turned off at first simply because it was a '90s show and I promptly attached the whole '90s, ridiculously cheesy show-sterotype to it. But let me say this - I have never, cried so much for any show ever. This show packs such an emotional wallop, it's a little embarassing to admit. But the cast has some of the strongest chemistry I've yet to see in dramas of late. Sorimachi Takashi is one of the best Japanese actors I've ever watched! This is a must for anyone beginning to watch Japanese dramas. | Hana Yori Dango [花より男子] Rating: 8/10 (Watched) The dynamics of the relationships between Tsukushi and Tsukasa/Rui were annoying at times. But in the end, this was a very satisfying, funny (while a little too teen-angsty) drama. |
Hana Yori Dango Season 2 [花より男子] Rating: 9/10 (Watched) This was definitely as full-filling of a drama as the first one! I really enjoyed this and the ending beats the actual manga ending. I'm weary about a possible third season, but the conclusion of this season was an amazing one! | Iryu [医龍 Team Medical Dragon] Rating: 10/10 (Watched) Top quality and innovative drama. This medical drama didn't get bogged down in too much romantic relationship dynamics but it did recognize some. The videography was definitely very kakko ii and the whole cast was SOLID. | Kimi wa Petto [きみはペット] Rating: 7/10 (Watched) I actually watched this broken up. The first six episodes before I left for Japan and the last four after I got back. I loved the drama in the first six episodes, but it seems that the last four were a tad flat and overwrought. The story overall is charming and of course the actors look good - but I believe the drama could have had a little more impact and condensened substance if the plot was less twisty. Eitherway, Matsujun is adorable in this and the lead actress is also strong. |
Lunch no Joou [ランチの女王] Rating: 7/10 (Watched) Lunch no Joou is a sort of unconventional spin on the love story, the family story and the story of coming to terms with one's past. I personally found the plot to be a little refreshing and performances were definitely emotional and felt real. There are a lot of tears in this drama but they are balanced with such a warm feeling from watching this story. I recommend this! | Nodame Cantabile [のだめ カンタビ−レ] Rating: 10/10 (Watched) Really amazing drama! So cute, a refreshing spin on the romantic comedy and the special effects are so amazing. | Orange Days [オレンジデイズ] Rating: 9/10 (Watched) A truly powerful and well written story. I've never seen a person's disabilities and the way it affects the people around them so delicately portrayed. The performances were nuanced and definitely held a dramatic punch to the heart. I felt as if I was going into the tribulations and upsets and frustrations that all the characters experience. I also felt as if I was enjoying their time together. Orange Days is a truly poignant drama. |
Summer snow Rating: 7/10 (Watched) This is your typical Japanese romantic story with an illness thrown in. I have literally cried at some point in much of the dramas I have watched and maybe it's because I'm simply exhausted with the same similar plot line - but Summer Snow does not do the most effective job of portraying the romance between Natsuo and Yuki. Yuki's performance also got quite irritating at times, but she did play the disabled semi-hopeless female alright. Overall I think this drama is a nice one but not the masterpiece many people tout it to be. Instead I'd recommend the excellent and emotional performances in Beautiful Life and even in Orange Days, both of which have similar plot lines and characters. | | |
