|---|
Megumi Noda, or "Nodame," is a piano student at Momogaoka College of Music. Although she is an extremely talented pianist who can play by ear, she can't read music. She also hates to take a bath or clean her room. For her daily meals, she usually grabs something out of her friend's lunchbox.
Nodame soon falls in love with Momogaoka's top student, Shinichi Chiaki. Born into a musical family, he plays the piano and violin brilliantly. Although his major is piano, he has secret ambitions to become a conductor.

Before I begin my praises, let me state the two, and only two, problems I had with this drama. First, I find the title a little misleading. It gives the impression that this drama is going to be about Noda Megumi, but as I watched it, it became clear that the emphasis is hugely on Chiaki-kun. This isn�ft a problem, per say, but I would have liked to have seen more development in Nodame�fs character. She develops musically, but her inner depth remains the same. And second, I disliked Stresemann. It wasn�ft so much the actor, Naoto Takenaka, who I think is grand. It was more the physical appearance�c and personality�c and�c I dunno. He just annoyed me. I cringed whenever he appeared in an episode. There is something so dirty about him. Whenever he opened his mouth, I felt sticky and disgusted. And he wasn�ft at all convincing as a conductor, which I suppose is a flaw in Naoto. He was way off beat and didn�ft follow the measure conducting that way it�fs supposed to be. But anyways, aside from these two points, the drama was perfect.
People may consider the comedy in this drama to be a bit �gslapstick�h but I thought it was artistically done. The physical scenes were well choreographed and the animated acting was refreshing. Ueno Juri was brilliant, as usual, but Hiroshi Tamaki pleasantly surprised me. He was surprisingly good in this comedic role, and much of the drama�fs success needs to go to him. I haven�ft read the manga so I don�ft know how closely the plot was followed, but the storyline was very good. It grew slowly in a delightfully liquid way. I was emotionally upset when the drama came to an abrupt end after the final performance.
Ah, the performances. There are few words I can use to convey just how divine the music was in this drama. I�fve always been a fan of classical music, so perhaps the �goverwhelming�h factor was downplayed on me a bit. But it�fs not just the music. It�fs the musical artists and their interaction with the audience. It�fs the members of the orchestra and their interaction with each other. It�fs the players and their interaction with their instruments. When Nodame sits in the audience and weeps, I weep as well. The music is powerful, yes, but it is made even more beautiful by the characters and the actors who play such characters. During that last performance�c when the violins lifted, I swear I had shivers dancing on my spine.

This is a show that is comprised of 3/4's comedy and 1/4 drama. I won't really go into the comedy aspect of it as most people have already talked about how hilarious it is every single episode. Think of all the crazy physical comedy going on in a manga or anime brought to life and that's pretty much what Nodame Cantabile is in a nutshell.
As for the drama aspect I think this is where the show really sets itself apart as something special. It goes into a subject that I don't think we see enough in dramas which is with the character becoming part of something bigger than himself and undergoing a major shift in personality due to the effect of those around him, specifically by his love interest (or better described as his punching bag that goes gyabo! when you hit it) who is a polar opposite of himself. This show reminds me of Densha Otoko (made by the same director) in that yes it is a love story but more than that it's about becoming a better person because of the interactions with people we take for granted.
It is also reminiscent of Densha because of its great ensemble cast. There is of course the two leads who both seem like they were destined to play there respective characters, but the other orchestra members also give great performances that are so memorable. Special nods go to Eita(Mine) and Koide Keisuke(Masumi) who do so much with the little lines they are given. Also Kimura Ryou coming in in the last few eps as Kiyora(musically) and Masumi's(err.. romantically?) rival was a great decision, that guy is a comedy ace and brought in some fresh comedy when the series needed it. Most importantly though is Takenaka's portrayal of Stresman, he deserves some kind of award for stealing every scene he is in.
Nodame is really well done with the best musical arrangement I have ever heard in any drama and it is a shame that it isn't more popular than it is. okay..with that said, I absolutely recommend this drama to anyone who's looking for great laughs but not so much that they forget reality. What's great about this movie is that it's able to be humorous and cute without losing any of its depth or meaning.

*when Nodame and Chiaki play together for the very first time in sync. I loved how Chiaki adjusted himself to Nodame's "freestyle" method of playing instead of trying to get her to play by the score (his way) scene was beautifully done

Though this drama may seem serious at first, it also tends to have hilarious anime-like moments such as amusing sound effects when someone is being hit (gyabooooooooooo!). The characters are colorful as well--Nodame, a piano-playing genius, who can't read music and is a slob of a girl with a disaster area for an apartment; Masumi, an afro-clad guy has the hots for Chiaki (also a male); Mine, a violin player with a wild, but funny side; and 'Stresemann, a perverted orchestra conductor, who is supposedly German (with a cringe-inducing accent) in the show, but looks Japanese, with a bad tan and obviously fake nose and wig. :D The main character Chiaki is the one of the serious players in this drama, but there are times when he has his moments (looks of horror and disbelief when it comes to Nodame's outrageousness).

This is really 2 dramas in one. There is a totally-stupid-and-funny-manga-like component, and a more serious component.
The Manga-like scenes are hilarious and I just watched the first episodes just to see more of them. Then it became a bit tedious, but the director of the drama was smart enough not to let the story revolve too much around the fun part and build a serious story around it.
I almost dropped off the series at episode 3 as I was getting tired of the jokes, and basically nothing was happening to the story. Then I tried again, and I'm very glad that I did, because then the story becomes really interesting. The actors are great, the music very well chosen, and the concerts along the series are great to watch too.
Superb drama, with a mix of everything in it.

It's simple, yet fresh in delivery and fine in execution, a mark of top notch direction. The whole casts and characters are marvelous including ALL supporting casts and chars. And there are some of the most celebrated classical pieces... and one of coolest arrangements of my favourite Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue".
A lot have been said about Nodame Cantabile, and there's still a lot more to be said, but let me reiterate some. What grabs me most is the character development. Despite the tone being mostly comedy, at the end, I have this feeling of relief as everyone had gone through their own (wonderful) life-altering journey. And the ever subtle romantic development really befits Chiaki and Nodame's characters.
This has been an interesting (romantic) story. And as the final curtain dropped, I gave the drama a standing ovation.

A well-adapted series led by Ueno Juri and Tamaki Hiroshi. Juri played her part very well and Tamaki certainly shone in the leading role. The supporting characters were well represented by the rest of the cast, Takenaka being a very interesting 'Stresemann' character. Mizukawa Asami was probably my fav character in this series :) - she looked quite professional and i'm actually curious if she played the violin for this filming of the series. The comedy in the series served the dorama well and certainly did not overwhelm the underlying storyline and the more serious issues the characters faced. Last of all, the background music and classical pieces chosen for this series were surprisingly well-picked. I would definitely recommend this light-hearted comedy without reservation! This one is a bit unusual for 2 reasons: The first reason is obvious, and I must say hilarious the first time you see it; it is the totally-crazy-Manga-like scenes; they make the first episodes just fly. The second one is that the dorama changes quite a bit beyond the second or third episode. It becomes more serious, more interesting, more subtle, more rewarding.
So, stick to it at least until episodes 4 or 5. I almost stopped watching it at episode 3 because I was getting a bit tired of all the Manga-like jokes. This was a mostly enjoyable show, however, it's quite overrated. The best thing about it by far is the music. The musical segments are wonderful. You can really tell the cast put a lot of time into learning their instruments. Tamaki Hiroshi is ok as Chiaki, but Ueno Juri really overplays her part. I know this is adapted from a manga, so I expect a certain amount of overacting, but the Nodame character was too much. They should have toned it down just a bit, as well as the gay character, he was also overplayed. I also never believed the love story for a second, whether it was the actors, directing or script, I just didn't. That said, this movie is worth the watch. I love the part where Chiaki and Nodame play together for the first time. This happens after Chiaki's frustration to get Nodame to play by the score (his way), this is also when he discovers that by adjusting to her "free style" they are in perfect sync. I also thought it was cute when chiaki was washing and drying her hair (*^_^*)

While I agree the title can be a bit misleading, as the story seems to revolve more around Shinichi - and hence Shinichi's character develops more than Nodame's - who cares about the title when this is one of the best dramas ever to be produced? Ueno Juri and Hiroshi Tamaki excel in their roles as Nodame and Chiaki Shinichi respectively; the rest of the supporting cast do well in their roles as well. Humour can get a little exaggerated at times and Stressman puts me off because he's both creepy and perverted (but let's give him the kudos for good acting), but this is still a must watch. This is my favorite drama so far. It's very inspiring. Before Nodame, I never really listened to classical music. But after Nodame, I began to become more interested and listened to classical music a lot more! :D
This drama gives background to some of the classical music, making you understand it, and somehow relates it to the plot. Also, when Chiaki/Tamaki conducts, you can feel the characters' passion, and it somewhat sparks your own. At least, that was what happened with me. :P

Very enjoyable drama, that is definitely one thing people can say about this drama. It's also good to see this drama stem away from the university love story type dramas and in that sense it creates its own genre. I really loved it - the leads were perfect, and they were backed with a very strong support headed by eita (who is getting better and better as an actor himself). I havent read the manga, but even so its obvious that this drama pays it respects to the manga very closely as the characters are portrayed as almost comic or cartoon-like. After watching the anime, I fell in love, so decided to watch the drama and ... WOW! I loved it! The actors were great, esp. Ueno Juri as Nodame...she's soooo cute! This jdorama seriously got me interested in other jdoramas. I've seen a couple so far and none of them even compare to Nodame! It doesn't have TOO much drama (which i like), and is friggin hilarious! The CG sequences were hysterical, esp. combined with the wonderful acting.

This is probably the funniest dorama series I've ever seen. All the actors did a great job, and the story was so well written that it's hard to believe this is a comedy series, not to mention it's based on manga, which usually have pathetic storylines. The performance scenes were very moving, and they did a very good job displaying the passion in music.

The most slapstick, entertaining, and fun drama I've ever seen with great, great music and a star-making performance by Ueno Juri as the sloppy, ditzy, and adorable Nodame. I don't know if it's the time in my life or the magic of the series, but its the first time I've found myself seriously emotionally invested with the characters of an Anime or Drama (I watched both in rapid succession). Nodame breaks my heart every time she says "Chiaki-sempai" with her cute mouth.
How embarassing to be a nearly 30 year old guy and swoon at a fictional character like that!

I don't get it. This drama is so popular, but it hasn't clicked for me. There is no character that I really care about. Nodame is flaky and whiny, Chiaki is full of himself and always whipping her upside the head, and the gay guy with the afro is just irritating. And I typically like the gay guys in jdorama.

Ueno Juri is the reason this dorama is so good. She shows she is not only a talented actress, but an excellent comedian. All the cast is simply perfect, specially Tamaki Hiroshi (his facial expressions are hilarious!) and Koide Keisuke (who plays Masumi). This dorama is a must-watching to everyone who hasn't seen it yet.

I just finished watching this drama and it was awesome. The infusion of classical music in this drama makes it quite elegant and yet, it's still light and funny. The actors were also able to do justice to the characters they portray. Artists have relatively different temperaments and they were able to capture it in their acting. One of the most entertaining series of 2006. Ueno Juri plays the role of Noda Megumi, a carefree brilliant pianist who has a love for an anime series and eating. One day she meets the most coveted boy in their music school and instantly falls head over heels for him. He can't say the same about her, but is impressed with her piano playing. Tamaki Hiroshi plays the part of Chiaki Shinishi, Megumi's love interest and one of the wealthiest and most talented people in school. His dream is to become a conductor and to do so he must study abroad, however he has a fear of planes and boats seeing as he had traumatic experiences with both as a child.
Those two meet and their lives change and intertwine with one another. With the help of Streseman who enrolls into the school as a conductor, the musical careers and outlooks of the students there change for the better. The students reach for goals higher than they could have imagined before because their fellow teachers and friends continue to push them to do better than what they initially thought they could accomplish. It was very touching and optimistic, yet down to earth.
This drama was so much fun to watch and I loved the two main characters who had great chemistry with one another. This is one of the most adorable and most memorable coupling in a drama in awhile. Technically speaking this dorama is one of the bests I've seen so far. Besides that, I expected much more (maybe because of the high ratings it was getting) and just got disappointed. Music is really good and the show made me want to learn more things about classical music; concerts impressed me a lot. Manga-like scenes made me laugh (and that's quite difficult) but I wished there were more of them. Chiaki-senpai is too cool, too egoistic, too egocentric and too rigid; Nodame is annoying, why does she talk and walk and run as a 5 year old girl? She was too 'cute', I didn't like it at all. Story itself was a bit messy as well; I understood the progression Chiaki-senpai makes but somehow I felt it was not very well explained. But not everything's bad; I managed to end watching it (although I have the 2 specials I don't feel like watching them) and music is superb. I only got (a bit) touched on the last concert (lovely!). Greater than the sum of its parts. The story is well design and neatly packaged. The characters are so endearing and special. Good introduction to classical music if you've never been a fan (you'll certainly fall in love with some of the music). Great soundtrack (not surprising).
Ueno Juri at her best! Nodame is sooo sweet and cute. It's hard not to fall for her. There are times where some of her emotional responsed feel a little overdone. She's brilliant when she gets pissed at Chiaki and lays the Nodame-smack down. Gyabo!
Tamaki Hiroshi is great in this as the (mostly) unflappable Chiaki. He's very well done and emotionally balanced. His mannerisms are graceful and his facial responses are superb. Even though I'm a bigger Juri fan, I really think he made this drama.
Almost all of the other characters are at least pretty good. Such a varied ensemble. Mine and Kiyora (why didn't we see 10x more of her!!!) deserve special mention for being vulnerable and arrogant, both.

A really awesome drama!! Kinda ashamed to admit it, but I was hesitant on watching it because Tamaki Hiroshi was a bit old in my opinion (even though he isnt!!!! Im just an insane psycho freak sometimes) but his character turned out to be one of my favorites. Ueno Juri was great too but Eita really stole the show in my opinion. He's such a cool guy and his hair was awesome!! All the characters contributed so much to the show and they all shined even though there were a ton of people in the cast.
And of course, the soundtrack was absolutely amazing; why wouldn't it be when the show features such well-known classicals? I enjoyed the orchestra performances immensely and I like how the actors were playing the instruments themselves (or were they? Lol they looked like they were so ya xD). Now I really wish I hadnt given up on piano!

Of all the dramas I've seen, Nodame Cantabile holds a special place in my heart. With its unique charm, I was hooked with the first episode. Everything about it was comical but also well-balanced with a healthy dose of gravity, which doesn't define the series as wholly comedic. The special effects were a pleasure to watch. As an adaptation from the manga, I was pleased to see that there was an animated quality of the series without looking too fake.
Although I do question the authenticity of conducting, the acting was well-executed. I adored Ueno Juri's Nodame and Tamaki Hiroshi's Chiaki. The entire cast got along well, and it was apparent near the end. All the actors looked as if they would cry together on set. IMO the major problem in Nodame is the ridiculous number of characters in the story (and its not like they appear just one episode and disappear.. they continue appearing on the dorama as the show goes on...) I found a lil hard to pay attention for the main couple, the two teachers, the maestro, the S-oke's members, the R-S member's, Chiakis's ex-girlfriend, the school director, Nodame's friends, the gay violinist, Mine's father, the reporter and his assistent... Haven't watched such an entertaining dorama like this one for so long. Ueno Juri gave an excellent performance as well asTamaki i'm-not-sure-what's-his-1st-name-is. It's great to see Ueno-san potray an anime character that is also realistic at the same time. She really did surpass my expectations because I have really only seen her in more sombre roles before (Orange Days, Kindaichi 2005 & Swing Girls). And Tamaki-san showed that he can inject humour and emotion into his usual cool-kakkoii facade. Oh, I must not forget to mention the rest of the cast gave a kampeki performance too, especially Eita, and the Myoja timpani player.

This is another drama that i really like. With great cast as well except for the mushroom headed guy who acted in liar game.....can't stand him....he's so annoying. The performances are really nice especially the very first one by S-oke and i wonder who tot of the idea of them doing some action while playing XD.......well,japanese people ARE creative aren't they XD.One of my fav songs from the drama is symphony no.7......so nice......even on the piano when nodame played. Possibly the cutest drama i've ever seen. I first saw ueno juri in Engine and I thought she was really good. Here she just amazes me...the way she talks, the way she acts around chiaki, gosh i can't think of anyone perfect for the role. Tamaki Hiroshi is great too and i love how he can pull of being kakkoi and completely silly at the same time. (not to mention he is HOT). The pace of the drama was very good...it was funny without being slapstick and dramatic as well without being cheesy. In normal situation, I would be appalled by how Chiaki physically abuses Nodame (come on those punches?!?!), but the scenes were choreographed so comically that I had to laugh all the times. Absolutely one of my favorite Jdramas! I am a big fan of classic music so this was just exactly my taste! The development of both characters and story was in perfect speed and very exciting as well. The lovestory was sooo cute and enjoyable! I really have no complaints of this drama. It was totally amusing and loveable! The humor was outstanding with all the special effects like pink cheeks and small hearts flying around combined with classical dramatic music and Ueno Juri and Tamaki Hiroshi characters were so...GOOD!!! That goes for Eita and Mizukawa as well or... the rest of the whole cast! Fantastic! (Takenaka Naoto is my god... I can't stop laughin at his character and dialect...)

This series made me realize things about classical music and orchestras and stuff. That it's actually beautiful music. Although I got bored at times watching this, I can still say that I enjoyed this in the end. Maybe it's not a must-watch, but it's worth watching anyway. It's not a waste of time. Great music, excellent acting, interesting plot, funny and serious... This series barely lacks anything. I was touched in the last scene. It should be hard to film this kind of series, about classical music.. but it all went so good and looked very real.

It was a pretty entertaining watch. I was reluctant to watch it due to the hype; in the end, it didn't exactly prove worthwhile, but it was still a fun ride. The humor is pretty good. Nodame wasn't exactly 100% lovable to me, and neither was Chiaki; both of them got on my nerves at times. The premise/lesson of the drama was an interesting topic: passion in music (I think this applies to every type of art actually), but in the end the series only managed to touch on the surface of the topic, and didn't provide much insight, which contributed to the series' failure to achieve a lasting presence in my heart. I liked this one for 3 reasons. First, the totally-crazy-Manga-like scenes, especially in the beginning. Then, the music all along the Dorama, particularly the big concerts. And finally, because it was what I qualify as a "good" dorama, which has a balance of everything: laughter, emotion, surprises, interesting characters, action, etc. I almost dropped off at the second episode, I was getting tired of the jokes - maybe there were too many of those - but then I am glad that I kept going because the jokes stop a little bit and as the story becomes more serious it becomes more interesting. Very enjoyable drama, that is definitely one thing people can say about this drama. It's also good to see this drama stem away from the university love story type dramas and in that sense it creates its own genre. I really loved it - the leads were perfect, and they were backed with a very strong support headed by eita (who is getting better and better as an actor himself). I havent read the manga, but even so its obvious that this drama pays it respects to the manga very closely as the characters are portrayed as almost comic or cartoon-like. FANTASTIC! Best drama of 2006 that I have seen so far. Tamaki Hiroshi really surprised me! He completely threw himself into the role of Chiaki. Ueno Juri as Nodame as well! Although some elements of the story had to be left out due to time (Awwh, why can't dramas be longer sometimes), I felt like the adaptation was expertly achieved. Everyone involved dud an amazing job reproducing what makes Nodame Cantabile really shine in anime and manga. I'm excited for the future! pretty good, a really good cast, in my opinion. silly, fun, and funny. the musical performances were great and the development of the orchestras were fun and fulfilling to watch. I think Ueno is a great actress, but her character nodame was getting pretty annoying towards the end. after a while i just wanted her to be normal and not a freaking weirdo anymore. and the lisp kinda made me twitch. It would deserve 10/10 for the music, and 1/10 for the obnoxious stupidity of some characters (i.e. Masumi should be put out of his misery imho) and of many scenes. Still, the music is just too good, as is the idea that even just a small percentage of the viewers will be drawn to classical music thanks to this dorama (sidenote for those who will venture for the first time in a theater or concert hall: no, you don't have to wait until someone shouts "Bravo!" before you are allowed to applaude, LOL). This is one of those live-action series which is definitely a must see. You will definitely love the tandem of Ueno Juri and Tamaki Hiroshi. Ueno is very funny and lovable as Nodame. As for Chiaki, it�fs been a while since I�fve watched Tamaki in a comedy, or should I say, done a comedy since �gWaterboys: The Movie�h but he�fs still as funny as ever. Added laughs from Eita & Kaede Kosuke (both from Waterboys Season 1&2 respectively). The gem of the season!
Having read of course the manga first (and still reading), I was more than overjoyed hearing there would be a drama, especially starring Tamaki Hiroshi whom I`ve been following since WaterBoys the movie.
While the manga is excellent, it is hard to write a�@manga about music... without music. The drama gave me exactly what I wanted. Excellent music, the goofiness of the manga and a very well balanced cast!

Une serie vraiment tres agreable a regarder. Des personnages nombreux et sympathiques, des moments droles (pas mal de mimiques tirees du manga ET bien adaptees), une musique geniale (ah, le classique...). If I had realised how much I was gonna enjoy this dorama I would have put it in my DVD player the second I got it. In fact I had this several days before I actually put it on and once I started watching it I was hooked!
I'm so glad I brought this on a whim, it is extremely funny and I just LOVE how the relationship develops between Nodame and Chiaki. It's really heart warming. There were moments that really made me 'squee'

A comedy about an undisciplined but brilliant piano prodigy who develops a symbiotic relationship with a disciplined pianist who dreams of becoming a conductor yet is hampered by naysayers. This could have worked as a serious drama but is presented as an even mix of serious drama with screwball comedy. In this case the comedy works, and does not obscure the serious message about determination in achieving one's goals. A little predictable, but well worth the time. I would have to say that I wasn't expecting a lot from this series but wow, I'm glad that I was completely wrong! Excellent acting from all the cast. I haven't been so immersed in a series for a while that I would have to lose sleep just in order to watch it. The mix between love, comedy and music is the way to go. And Takenaka Naoto's role as Strezman...PERFECT. Absolutely hilarious! Jan 2007: This is one of the few dramas that made me cracked up like hell almost every episode. The most hilarious jdrama I've seen this year. Gotta love classical music after watching it, thumbs up for the actors for putting alot of effort to make the instrument playing scenes looked as real as possible. Nodame and Chiaki were such a CUTE couple =D Love the cast, Stressmann's weird accent rocks lol. Unfortunately i'm not as good as Wyn-chan at reviewing dramas, so i'll just say that it lives up to all the hype - and more. Juri Ueno IS brilliant, and although I found the Stresemann character irritating at first, in the end I didn't mind him at all. Takenaka Naoto has an impressive voice at least. Tamaki Hiroshi was great as the uptight Chiaki-senpai, and the rest of cast are uniformly excellent.

From all the dorama i've seen, this one is the most anime-like to date. the actions are sometimes exaggerated nicely but i definitely well-adapted for tv. As the dorama progresses, i found myself getting drawn into the series as i developed an attachment to the characters. Another anime/manga-styled drama. The actors go all out to give the comic touch, and the classical music is, needless to say, totally entertaining. I was running to my piano, just like Nodame, after the first five episodes. Excellent drama with some great classical music. You have to watch this drama with a good stereo/surround system or else you're cheating yourself from the emotional impact of the music... Ueno Juri and Tamaki Hiroshi are cast perfectly as the likable, quirky leads, with fine performance from the supporting cast... And this drama doesn't lose anything from repeated multiple viewings... It's that good. Highly, highly recommended viewing. :) |

Awesome chemistry between Tamaki Hiroshi and Ueno Juri! I really love Tamaki's turn as Chiaki senpai, he had wonderful facial expressions that just cracked me up big time. And how hot was he when he was all immersed in music? Be it conducting or playing the piano, Tamaki oozed sexiness! Ueno was so charming, goofy and sweet as Nodame, you can't help but root for her to get together with her Chiaki senpai. And the music featured was perfect, I loved every piece chosen and it's great for people who like classical music. This is another must-watch drama. Ueno juri,eita and the afro dude's acting was great. As for Hiroshi.....at some parts,his acting look kind of fake but oh well,he still looks great! The one thing i really enjoyed is the piano playing and the orchestra. The songs were really great and nodame really inspired me to try to play the songs. This drama is a little animeish but i really think it's super funny and it was a good choice to follow the anime style......i've never seen any drama which is like that before. Nodame Cantabile is the best live-action adaption of a manga I've ever seen. It's full of comedy, touching and inspiring music, larger than life characters who are all very endearing and funny. Instant classic! Love the plot, music, everything, and of course the acting is top notch.
