This is my first experience with Honey and Clover. I have never watched the anime, the movie, or read the manga.
I enjoyed the chemistry between Nomiya, Takemoto, Yamada and Mayama. Hagumi was like an outsider looking in most of the time. I wonder if it was the acting, or the script or the direction, but she just didn't fit into the group of friends. Apart from that, it was really the bond and banter between friends that kept the series going for the first few episodes. Things started to slow down in the middle and I felt that many scenes were totally pointless. The love triangles were mundane and went stagnant towards the end of the story. Especially in Yamada's case; I was wondering when she'd be smart enough to let go of her unrequited love and learn to recognize the one in front of her eyes.
This is my first time watching Ikuta Toma, and I did enjoy his portrayal as Takemoto Yuta. However, Narimiya Hiroki stole the show with his outstanding performance as the genius Nomiya. Narimiya himself is a genius, at acting. I watched Narumi Riko in 1 Litre of Tears, and compared to that, her acting in Honey and Clover is mediocre and colourless.
I liked the ending song, Canvas by Hirai Ken, and its piano version. I wasn't thoroughly impressed, however, by the soundtrack as a whole.

I thought Honey and Clover was INCREDIBLY slow to watch at some points. The story itself was pretty good and I'd heard a lot about the manga so I decided to watch this (and the fact Toma was in it).
Things really started picking up the last half of the series and especially enjoyed seeing things between Ayumi, Mayama and Nomiya pick up.
Toma did a good just as Takemoto, a contradictive character as opposed to his role as Nakatsu in Hana Kimi. Personally I think the Nakatsu side suits him more because he has a nice smile.
The rest of the cast did VERY well. My favourite character was Nomiya.. though I don't know why I like him the most XD
Overall the drama was okay, though the manga would probably have been better. I watched through this mainly because of Ayumi and Nomiya, and also because Toma was in it. Personally I wanted to stop watching during the first few episodes becuase it was so slow, but the end definitely improved from the beginning.

I can see what the director and producers were thinking by bringing Narumi Riko (16) - a talented young actor - into the role of Hagumi. However, that lively youthfulness they were hoping to transfer onto screen in reality was contrastively replaced by a dull, lifeless perfomance. Anybody who has seen Aoi Yuu as Hagumi (probably in her best performance) in the movie version (worth a watch by the way) will know what I'm talking about. Imagine what the likes of Ueno Juri could've done with this role. She would've nailed it out of the park. Apart from that, the story is also incredibly slow, despite the lovely, laidback setting of artschool. Narimiya Hiroki is excellent as always and frustratingly so, because he is ALWAYS the standout in his dramas (stand up, kou kou no kyoshi etc.) and is somehow unable to get a proper gig as a main character in a drama. I've read the manga, and watched both seasons of the anime. When the live action movie came out, I was extremely excited. Unfortunately, it failed to deliver anything nearly astounding as the anime/manga did.
Then, when the drama was announced, I kept a tiny sliver of hope when I saw how great the cast looked. Again, I was only let down. It started off okay, and while some episodes managed to get to me with very specific scenes, the series itself just dragged. I was really pleased with the casting all around. Takemoto was so much better a character than in the anime. As was Morita (even though his story was severly truncated in the drama). I thought Romaya Sempai was a wonderful addition. The middle of the series was so fractured and dragged along so slowly that , however, I honestly can't recommend the series to anyone. I think the director should pretty much be shot. They were random scenes thrown together and like 6 or 7 episodes dragged by because they had so little greater meaning. To be honest, The drama was slow, especially in the beginning. I almost dropped it after the second episode.
But somewhere along the way, this drama started to grow on me. By the end of it, I found that I really enjoyed this drama. I can't really describe it, but this drama really was touching.
If I was impartial though, I would probably give this drama a 6/10.

It is a wonderful story about friendship, love, finding your own way.
I don't know why, but i was really touched by the dorama, i could exactly feel how tekemoto was feeeling with regard to love and your future way and how to find it...

Decided to watch the series since I absolutely loved the manga (one of the funniest I've read in a long time) but didn't have a great experience with the Chinese drama (stuck to the manga's story and had some great actresses, but mainly the acting was not so great). I turned to the Japanese version in hopes of seeing better acting and the amazing Kashiwabara Takashi ^^
For the most part, the acting is better, but the story is too different from the manga for my liking, particularly because the J-drama is much less funny and lighthearted than the manga. The drama plot is typical of college dramas and focuses on the complex relationships among the students and how they chase/find their dreams. So although at first the drama was pretty enjoyable and funny, soon enough, the story becomes too dragged out and cliche (the Romaiya-senpai thing was funny the first two times, not so much after the 10th).
I was really impressed with Ikuta Toma since he did a great job making himself a completely different person from the role he portrays in Voices (the only other drama I've seen him in), which convinced me he's a great actor. However, I'm not so positive about Narumi Riko's performance.
Overall, this was a fairly mediocre and disappointing drama. Although Orange Days did not rank high in my books either, as another mediocre college drama that I've watched, it was still better in comparison to this (incidentally, it also features Nariyama Hiroki and Kashiwabara Takashi though I can't remember Kashi's role).

Actually,it's kind of boring. Not super boring,but a little. I really dun like the main female lead because i think her acting looks so fake. Even when she smiles,it doesn't look genuine. Sigh....maybe it's because i've seen her acting in 1 litre of tears and her character is nothing like in honey and clover but i still think that her acting in 1 litre of tears is more convincing. Other than her,i love the rest of the cast especially toma and osamu!! After watching for a while,i began to wonder,who exactly is the main character because the drama doesn't really focus on the main character but all the 4 friends. That's why,instead of paying attention to the main storyline.....toma and the painter girl,i actually drifted off and was more interested in mayama and the pot girl. The ending was nice,the storyline is not bad,the soundtrack too and also the beginning and the ending where they played the theme song. The main issue I have with this dorama is that, until ep.8, the only interesting things about it were the scenes with Romaya-sensei and the ever-changing BTS clips shown during the closing credits (BTW, great song, seriously!). Dull script, unappealing characters and an annoying plot (or rather lack thereof) made it a real pain in the you-know-what to keep on watching until that point. Luckily, though, I didn't give up, as things picked up very quickly from then on and the last episodes were like a fireworks display reaching its climax. Now, how to grade something like that? Seven painfully slow and uninspiring episodes would deserve a "3" or "4", 4 very good episodes could get an "8" or even a "9"...I'll go with something in between and give it a "6". Being a fan of the anime i had pretty high expectations for this drama. I wasn't so much let down by the cast especially with Narimiya Hiroki and Ikuta Toma, who both in my opinion, did a better job in their roles as morita and takemoto than the movie version (sorry sho chan ><) but overall it still wasn't very well done. Along the way a lot of the positive messages in experiencing heartache and rejection and growing up that the anime did so well at conveying, just got lost in the drama which was a big dissappointment. Hmmmmmm... not easy to grade this one. All in all it's definitely none of my favourites. It lacks some nice absorbing flow... and the characters aren't of my like, but still it had some nice moments. The first episodes were kinda slow, but somehow it catched my interest in episode 8 and 9, which were really good ones. I'm still not sure what to say about the ending. I kinda missed something here, it doesn't really feel as if it ended. Hm. Definitely ok, to see the struggles of the characters and nice philosophic aspects, too, but all in one lacks some assertiveness. 11 episodes... 1 love triangle and 1 love square... and the ending doesnt fell like an END at all. That's all i can say 'bout honey and clover! So far Honey and Clover gotta be one of the most boring doramas i've ever seen... And wtf was that ending? Gotta be THE WORST ending ever... This dorama would be much better if they showed only Ikuta's character journey (the reason i rate this dorama a 3...) i can feel Yuuta's (Ikuta Toma) desperation, for not having destination in life, not knowing what to do., not have enough courage to teel his feeling. Somewhat this dorama teach me life.
As a fact i almost give up wacthing this after 3 episodes, at first i feels this dorama is slow, but when reached 4 episodes i started to like this dorama and fall in love with Toma's character at the same time.

I am in a love-hate relationship with this drama because some parts of it I absolutely enjoyed watching while other parts I wish I can just cut out of the drama.
To those of you who have not watched it yet, look forward to the interaction between Nirimiya Hiroki's charater and the main actress(sorry I forgot your name), Nomiya+Yamada and Ikuta Toma's self-discovering journey.

I decided to watch Honey and Clover mainly becoz of Ikuta Toma. Toma did impress me again in this drama, which is much different from his role as Nakatsu in HanaKimi. The story went so slow that I almost stopped watching it if not for Toma, but it got more interesting towards the end of the drama. I never read the manga nor seen the anime, that's why I can only compare this to the movie. This is "as good as it gets" for me or should I say, should have been for me. Great start, bad ending. i've never watched the anime version. this series can be great youth drama, but the storyline was sucked in the end. I was shocked when i read the main character was Narumi Riko, not toma. She is cute and talented, but the story tell us everything about Takemoto Yuta, i don't understand why the main character wasn't Toma.

i watched this one because i absolutely LOVED toma in hana kimi, but this drama was incredibly slow most of the time, and isnt one that leaves a lasting impression.

Although the anime does more justice than the live action, which is often the case, I thought that the producers really tried to kept the plot closely to that of the manga/anime. I didn't even realize the ending was the ending. It feels incomplete, but it was a nice drama. I really like the paintings that 'Hagumi' paints and the art directing. Other than it relating to me being in an art school, I thought the story was lacking. I love the Ayumi-Mayama-Norita triangle though. DROPPED. If you're going to watch this, I suggest watching the anime. Trust me and just save yourself the "OMFG, THIS IS HORRIBLE. WHAT A WASTE OF MY TIME [insert curses here]". I watched this for Nari, Toma and Riko. This drama is kind of slow BUT still I like the chemistry protray between the 5 leads in the drama. This is about 6.5ish- I watched this being a fan of the anime and I must say that this is a big letdown. Certain moments were too slow and some were too fast. The addition of Ryoma-Sama was great. This is a touching story of Takemoto and his college friends as they struggle through love, college life and their careers. I really enjoyed this one. It's a cute drama, I love the comedy in it, but it's just not really my type of drama.

The first few eps are okay, but because of the insanely bad acting (or rather, bad character) of the female lead and unrealistic characters (in a bad way), it just doesn't cut it. The only positive things about this drama are the sub-plots. |
