Ayase Haruka stars as the title character, Amemiya Hotaru, in this adaptation of Hiura Satoru's "Hotaru no Hikari" manga series. Hotaru is a twenty-something office lady who has become a "dried fish" - she has "retired" from love, and she prefers to spend her time lazily at home. Then one day, her world gets shaken up when she unexpectedly ends up living with her boss (Fujiki Naohito ). To complicate her life even further, she begins to find romance with a new employee named Makoto (Kato Kazuki). | Tokyograph |

| 1. | Starts slow, but gets better [Rating: 8/10] When I first started watching Hotaru no Hikari, I thought it was a bit dull. Nothing really sparked my interest and I felt, over all, indifferent to nearly everything that was happening with the plot. To be fair, this isnft necessarily a bad thing. But nor is it a good thing. How does one categorize gmediocreh?
By the seventh episode I finally started to enjoy the drama. Ifm not sure what it was. Possibly the very subtle shift in emotions the characters began to feel/expose? By the ninth episode I believe the gmediocreh for me shifted to ggoodh. It helped that I was satisfied with the ending.
Ayase was amusing to watch. I have a lot of respect for her as a result of watching some of her more powerful roles in other dramas. She wasnft outstanding in this particular role, but I did think she was hilarious at times and her comedic timing was grand. However, I found the transition of her work self and her home self too drastic, but this can easily be the fault of the writer/director, and not necessarily her as the actress.
Ryoko-chan was lovely as ever, but her character was severely downplayed. She almost faded half way into the drama and didnft make a stand again until the last few episodes. For as much as she was on screen, though, I thought she was grand! She has a charismatic presence that I donft think Ifll ever tire of.
The dude who played Makoto (notice the lack of effort on my part to find out his real name) was so blah! His acting was poor and he was really painful to watch. I also didnft dig his selfish, useless, pathetic character.
But goodness, Fujiki-san! I had a major crush on him when I first saw him in Ichi Ritoru no Namida, and maintained this crush for quite a while. It evaporated a bit after watching him in Antique, and completely disappeared after seeing him in Galcir. I think this role replenished it a bit. His character was grand and he really pulled it off. I was completely convinced by everything he said and did. I always enjoy a good man in a suit.
Although the drama started off slow, it did redeem itself at the end. Was it a great drama? Nah. But it was good. | Reviewed by Wynter on 3 February 2008 | 2. | A show with all the right charms [Rating: 8/10] This drama is such a treat! Throughout all the 10 episodes, it never fails to entertain, delivering tongue-in-cheek humor and adorable moments between the characters.
Ayase Haruka plays a rather simple-minded and clueless woman who has a messy alter-ego : himono-onna. She's so comical and likeable, and her character is very refreshing - she's flawed and she knows it, yet she's always at ease with herself eventhough her object of affection may not agree with her lifestyle. Fujiki Naohito is great, especially in funny scenes when he throws all these humorous, dispiriting remarks deadpan-style.
The platonic relationship between the leads - which is teeming with farcical bickering and heartfelt confessions - is such a joy to watch. The drama lacks any sort of affection, but the actors are more than capable to make their scenes work.
My only complaint is Koto Kazuki, who despite being a total eye-candy, is a very stiff and inept actor - but his performance doesn't decimate the awesomeness that is this show. Overall, I really enjoyed it and would totally recommend it to anyone who enjoys a light-hearted comedy. | Reviewed by Mint on 21 August 2008 | 3. | HORRIBLE, OVERRATED, LAME, JUST DOWN-RIGHT ANNOYIN [Rating: 5/10] Ayase Haruka is not cute or funny in this. She ends up being REALLY annoying. It's just so hard to watch her attempts at being cute... If you want to see cute go watch kitakawa keiko in mop girl. but in all seriousness her acting is absolutely horrible. It's overacting and lame. The script or the writing i bad enough as it is but she makes it even worse with her overacting.... sorry to break it to you but overacting doesn't make it funnier. it makes it worse.
The story/characters is just really banal and ordinary and it's just really boring. I have no idea why it's so popular. I've never seen fujiki naoto in a good drama... this being one of them.
The drama is not funny or romantic etc etc. 2 dramas that aired in the same season that are million times better than this are: hanazakari no kimitachi e, LIFE . these have better camerawork, directing, lighting, background music, etc especially LIFE. But seriously the lighting and the camerawork and the directing everything is so abysmal, you know the usual cheap j-drama feel from the like the 90s even though it's 2011 now... and this came out in 2007. | Reviewed by howtwosave on 10 December 2011 | 4. | Recommended! [Rating: 10/10] As somewhat a himono-onna myself, this drama really touched my heartstrings. After watching this, it gives me confidence that even a person like me may find someone.
I loved the underlying theme of the story - that the person you truly love is the person you feel most comfortable with. In any relationship, I think being able to understand each other is one of the most important aspects, and I loved how this drama was able to portray that so subtlely in Hotaru and Buchou's relationship. I think what really made the love triangle between Hotaru, Buchou and Teshima successful was the chemistry between the actors. There was just so much of it in the banter between Manager and Junior, chemistry that was very lacking in the careful relationship between Teshima and Hotaru. Was it the acting, the direction or the script? Whatever it is, it really works, and that's the driving force behind this drama.
This has definitely become one of my favourite dramas of all time. It's been a while since I watched something I loved so much. It's excellent, and one should definitely watch and enjoy it. | Reviewed by Limes on 13 June 2008 | 5. | My Fair Lady [Rating: 8/10] When Eliza Doolittle left Prof Higgins' house to marry Freddy, there is this song sung by Prof Higgins which I thought fits the mood of this story:
"I've grown accustomed to her face
She almost makes the day begin
I've grown accustomed to the tune she whistles night an' noon
Her smiles, her frowns, her ups, her downs
Are second nature to me now
Like breathing out and breathing in
I was serenely independent
And content, before we met
Surely I could always be that way again, and yet
I've grown accustomed to her looks
Accustomed to her voice
Accustomed to her face
But I'm so used to hear her say "Good morning" every day
Her joys, her woes, her highs, her lows
Are second nature to me now
Like breathing out and breathing in
I'm very grateful she is a woman
And so easy to forget
Rather like a habit one can always break and yet
I've grown accustomed to the trace
Of something in the air
Accustomed to her face"

I seldomly really laugh out loud while watching a dorama, but this one did it to me. The scenes between Hotaru (Ayase) and her Buchoo (Fujiki) at home were always so funny, and they kept coming with different types of jokes (not always the same thing that repeats itself).
I usually don't care much for Fujiki, who tends to always play the same type of role with his serious face (except Galcircle that was a bit too much), but in this dorama he managed to pull out a very credible character, which was far from easy considering what he had to face with the character of Hotaru, and really helped to build the comedy.
And yes, Kato Kazuki (Makoto) was a waste (he only has one face - I think he was playing with a mask on :-), but whatever, he was not the one you'd look at anyway.
It had been a while I had watched such a good comedy. I would compare it to Nobuta or Mukodono. | Reviewed by Jackykero on 26 April 2008 | 7. | wanted it to be different but... [Rating: 8/10] if the final didn't end like that it could get way from being dull. a man and a woman begin to live together and it is unavoidable for them to fall in love with each other. so from the beginning the goal of the serie was it. But here although at the end they said they loved each other I couldn't see it - at least from Hotaru's side. Teshima liked her as herself and always said this but she couldn't see it clearly and always tried to be the 'admirable girl' so when she wasn't herself when she was with Teshima and the guy was disappointed. I am not convinced Teshima and Hotaru are over each other and Hotaru loved her manager. She was alone for a long time and not having any reason to make him like her she had no problem being herself around him. It would be better if Teshima and Hotaru ended together at the end. I think it would also be refreshing for this kind of plots. | Reviewed by Uchiha Kaede on 28 April 2008 | 8. | Giddy fun [Rating: 9/10] Haruka Ayase is charming and amusing in her lead role as a hopelessly failed romantic unschooled in the language of love. Soon, she finds herself contemplating a relationship; but her home is a total mess, a problem that's complicated by the fact that she's sharing the place with her manager.
Ayase negotiates a role whose faces include an architectural assistant, a loner with self-esteem issues, and a "himono-onna" - doomed never to find romance. Ayase has already proven herself with tragedy, but she lends Hotaru no Hikari a giddy charm. I'm not very fond of love stories, but this one was very refreshing.
(a little spoilers)
I think it's because the story describes a friend/companion-like relationship between couples, instead of a very romantic one.
In most love stories in which there are 2 male leads, the female lead almost always ends up with the guy that she has romantic feelings for, while the other will be rejected with words like "I've always only thought of you as my best friend, and there's nothing more than that."
But that isn't truly the case in many real life situations... a lot of times, friendship-like relationships work out a lot better than relationships that are based on infatuation. And this is where Hotaru no Hikari distinguishes itself from other love stories -- it does a good job in describing the gradual sprouting of a love seed...
I started off rooting for Makoto, but as the series progressed, I also found myself taking a liking towards Buchou :P | 3. | Comments by Jeanxi [Rating: 10/10] I absolutely love this drama! It is definitely the best romantic comedy since Anego. The chemistry between Fujiki and Haruse was great even though, to me, they were more like family/siblings/close friends than a couple. I really wanted to see the two of them dating instead of having the show end where it did, but I also can't imagine the two of them kissing or doing other couple-y stuff...it's almost like incest >.< I think all of the cast was great in the show, except for the lack of acting by the guy who played Makoto. Good thing that he's at least ikemen =P The ending song by Aiko is also great. Just like how Kitade Nana's Kiss or Kiss fitted Anego perfectly and Every Little Thing's Swimy fitted Kekkon Dekinai Otoko perfectly, Aiko's Yokogao was great for Hotaru no Hikari. I'm really hoping that the producers will decide to make a good SP with some more plot progression....kyaaaaa! | 4. | Comments by occultangle [Rating: 8/10] Really quite funny, and quite good as well. I found it refreshing and enjoyable that none of the characters were evil or hateful, no villains here, all the antagonists were likeable human beings. Not every drama needs to be like this, but it seems a lot more watchable than the typical evil characters intent on ruining peoples lives that are in so many other drama series. But it did sadly feel somewhat empty and shallow. I think it had a lot to do with a lack of time and development of all the side characters. Usually I find side characters distracting and prefer dramas that keep a tighter focus on the main characters, but here I found myself feeling the opposite. Also most of the work related plot material was boring. This drama mostly deserves its popularity, but I feel it's just missing a little something that could have made it really exceptional. | 5. | Comments by EstherM [Rating: 8/10] Neat at work, total slop home, Hotaru has given up on love and prefers to hang out at her perch drinking beer. Her boss going through an acid divorce and has no other place to stay than at Hotarufs, which is incidentally owned by his parents. Obviously the two personalities clash and Hotaru happens to meet a guy she likes and with the help of her boss progresses in the relationship while all along the two have a thing for each other. This drama felt sometimes like a very loooong beer advert, targeted at women and somewhat like a re-hash of dramas such as Kimi wa petto, Last Christmas, Sapuri etc. On the plus side: the chemistry of the two main actors, their likeability, light entertainment and some funny scenes. | 6. | Comments by Sorata [Rating: 7/10] This is one of those doramas with ligh comedy and light romance story, while watching this i got the same feeling i had while watching Hana Kimi or 1 Pound no Fukuin. I was highly entertained by this but itLs the kind of dorama i wonLt watch again.
Only Hotaru(Ayase Haruka) and Seiichi(Fujiki Naohito) had character development, all the other character had almost zero character development, specialy Teshima(Kato Kazuki) who was such an important secondary character, he would deserve more development.
I really laugh on every funny conversation between Seiichi and Hotaru, the Himono-onna jokes were really funny.
If you like this kind fresh and light doramas then you can watch this one without fear. | 7. | Comments by joychin [Rating: 10/10] I really really enjoyed this drama. Even from the first episode,it was really interesting. I wasn't expecting ayase haruka to act that well but yes,she did. The way she expressed herself in the drama and the way she spoke really reminded me of Yankumi from Gokusen. Naohito,*melts* i liked him every since antique and i still really like him. I like his angry look......................because he doesn't frown! Haha! That's one thing i realised after watching so many dramas of him. He's really good at acting for sure. Oh,i like the makoto dude too. LOL! Another reason why this drama is enjoyable to me is because there isn't any really bad mean character. They're all nice <3. | 8. | Comments by Inujun [Rating: 9/10] Overall a light-hearted slice-of-life romantic comedy with a very interesting female lead who has some traits that remind me somewhat of myself and other friends around me. Its this interesting bit of her that actually carries the show, together with the chemistry between the foul-mouthed boss of hers.
Even though this whole drama seems to only talk about her life and how she copes with her romance, be aware though that it is nowhere near boring. In fact this series actually manages to balance many aspects together to make it one of the most worth watching this year | 9. | Comments by Susan [Rating: 10/10] A fun and light-hearted drama. I kept watching because Hotaru was so contradictory to herself. I wish I could be that relaxed and hard-working at the same time. In the end, I was sad that Hotaru adn Makoto couldn't make it work. I was a bit let down by the ending in general. There was no resolution to any relationship. Sometimes I'm satisfied with that in other dramas, but not in this case. Overall good, interesting, and fun to watch! | 10. | Comments by rikastar [Rating: 9/10] This is the first time I've seen Ayase in such a light-hearted and cute role and she does really well. Cute and refreshing story with nice supporting characters. I can't decide if it is the character Makoto or the actor (maybe both) but you can't feel any support or hope for their budding romance, especially not when Hotaru and Takano buchou have such great chemistry. The scenes at the house were especially just awesome and hilarious. | 11. | Comments by UsopSama [Rating: 9/10] Hotaru no Hikari is based on the manga of the same name; Hotaru is a girl who prefers to laze around at home rather than to seek romance, until her manager discovers her living habits. The story is very solid and touching. The acting is fantastic. The casting could not have been any better chosen. There is comic relief throughout the story so the story is very easy to digest. I seriously could not find any flaws in this series. | 12. | Comments by Ezalor [Rating: 8/10] This is a "feel good" Drama for me. I like this one, because it feels like a fresh breeze to watch. Ayase Haruka and Fujiki Naohito are performing some top-of-the-notch acting here. Very straight, linear story, but I like the Idea of this lifestyle, and the personalities of the main characters. Good chemistry between them. Maybe I should vote one point better for the Ayase-in-HD-experience XD | 13. | Comments by aiscess [Rating: 8/10] A light romantic comedy. One of those series that you had fun from watching. Not too much conflict but I must say that Ayase and Naofs character interaction at first was a little weak but it gets better after each episodes. Definitely a good performance from Ayase. Too bad her love interest here was as stiff as a rock, a different actor couldfve brought justice in portraying Makoto. | 14. | Comments by SayaOtonashi [Rating: 6/10] I loved Ahomiya-Buchou relationship, I think it was the best think about this drama. It was funny and entertaining too, I hoped they ended up being in love with each other, and everything seemed to lead there, but finally I was so disappointed; they should be together!! Anyway it's quite good. I read there's a Part 2 but it doesn't have good references so I suppose I won't watch it. | 15. | Comments by yourasthma [Rating: 10/10] Wasn't a fan of ayase haruka or naohito fujiki before this but i've been converted. The show may be light hearted but has enough 'heart' in it to score a 10. Acting was good (apart fr makoto), supporting cast was good, and I (rather unfortunately) could relate to Hotaru very well. My only wish is that there was an extra fifteen minutes of lovey dovey scenes between the leads. | 16. | Comments by Cerebus [Rating: 7/10] Comedy based on the dubious assumption that if you dress down away from work, then you are some sort of social outcast. The supporting cast are nothing more than cardboard cut-outs. The best parts where the conversions and bickering between Ayase Haruka and Fujiki Naohito. A special mention to DoReMii whose fansubs where superb and really caught the spirit of the show. | 17. | Comments by anpanman [Rating: 8/10] This was my favourite of the season. Ayase Haruka is adorable as Hotaru, and her bantering with Buchou was very entertaining. This was a very enjoyable series, although I still can't comprehend what is sooo unacceptable about females wearing t-shirts and tracksuits at home. I don't really believe the Japs are that superficial in real life. | 18. | Comments by nishishi [Rating: 5/10] Hummm.. an OK dorama imo!

I love seeing Ahomiya and Buchou sitting at porch drinking beer, watching fireflies, talking about their ups and downs at the end of the day. I should say that this dorama is the best in summer 2007. Fujiki Naohito is the best. Viva Tomodachi, and Itadaki Mambo! | 26. | Comments by Blood_Berry [Rating: 10/10] im giving it a 10 for the sole reason that Fujiki-san was just so d@mn BEAUTIFUL & PERFECT & ADORABLE in this dorama! LOL. | 27. | Comments by sadacori [Rating: 9/10] Ayase Haruka proves herself to be more than just an dramatic actress--she also has a comical side to her. Also, this is the first drama that I like Fujiki Naohito in. He plays the sarcastic, but caring BUCHOU(!), who I was more fond of than the Tsunko-look-alike Makoto. | 28. | Comments by chibichan [Rating: 9/10] very funny, in this dorama i found an interesting nickname "Himono Onna". Ayase Haruka potrays Himono Onna really good, it was hillarious watching her falling in love and feel extremely worried about it, especially when she try to tell her boyfriend about her weird habit | 29. | Comments by Bbbut [Rating: 2/10] horrible - stopped after 5 episodes - had a lot of potential (good story and support characters) but it all comes down to how good the main actress can deliver. And sadly Ayase is horrible in this. Her acting looks so unnatural and forced in my opinion. What a miscast... | 30. | Comments by Kitsuchi [Rating: 4/10] Weird sometimes, but sweet and funny at the same time. Tells the viewers how it's important to accept everything about the one you like/love, all good and bad things. Otherwise, it'd be difficult to feel at ease and be truly happy with each other.
Worth watching. :J |

The drama is really good but the I don't really like the ending!!! In the end, it's only 7 minutes for Hotaru and Buchou!!! Buchou should kiss her or something >"< I felt good after the show, though. and juz wanna watch it over & over again ^^

However, it was nothing like what I had expected and I'm glad that I checked it out after seeing all the positive reviews. For me, Hotaru no Hikari is battling with Anego for the best romantic comedy drama ever. I'm leaning more towards Hotaru no Hikari, though, probably because I can relate more and it's not as melodramatic. | 3. | v1olet fun to watch dorama about Ahomiya and Buchou. I should say this is the best summer dorama in 2007. Viva Tomodachi and Itadaki Mambo. Home is the best place at the end of the day, with Buchou sitting at the porch, of course. | 4. | ester_grace Ayase haruka is wonderful actress, I always impressed by her again and again..she was awesome as amemiya hotaru, so funny and natural. Fujiki naohito was amazing too, I never liked him before I watched this. | 5. | zhirong I love how Ayase Haruka says Buchoooooooooo and HUH? HUH?! HUH!!
Simply a nice romantic comedy. Predictable plots but who cares! I just love how Ahomiya and Buchoooooooo interacts. | 6. | dokodemodoa i read the posts above me, and see someone wrote "the story of my life".
