Okay, I watched "Trick," and once I found out we were getting "Trick 2," I was, like, "Wahooooo!"
But, while "Trick 2" is a great series, there were two things that kept me from giving it the same rating as the original:
1). The chemistry between Nakama Yukie and Abe Hiroshi wasn't nearly as strong. While in the first series, you were hoping they'd get together, the second series doesn't have the same semi-romantic overtones (what little there was).
2). "Trick 2" had a slow start. The first episode (which lasted an almost excruciating two and a half episodes), which was about a curse placed upon a village by fallen samurai warriors, was interesting, but didn't have the same spark as all the stories in the first series. Don't worry, though, from the second story on, things get better.
I think if you were confused by "Trick," "Trick 2" will leave you dumbfounded. There's a lot of cultural and language jokes that I think will go over a lot of people's heads. For example, one of my favorite jokes was in the first story.
The set-up: the worker at the inn, uses a lot of honorifics, such as "o" and "go," calling Yamada "O-Yamada." While this is key to the story, it makes for a good joke when Ueda tells Yamada, who wants to leave the onsen, that there is only ONE train to the station. Of course, Yamada, who spoke to the clerk, tells Ueda to stop lying, and that there are five buses to the train station.
The punchline: Upon review of the train schedule, Yamada says "Go-oufuku?!"
You get it? If not, a lot of the other jokes will stump you, too, leaving the show as confusing, rather than hilarious (which is what I think it is). Translation just does not capture the humor, as things like that can't be translated in just a few words (I helped translate this and the original "Trick" for airing in CA).
There are also other things, like in the beginning of the story about the ghost cab, the guy in the beginning of the show was Seki-chan, from Fuji TV's wildly popular reality show, "Ainori." In "Ainori," four guys and three girls travel around the world, searching for love (with each other, of course). Seki-chan was one of the most popular people from that show, and when he tells the girl in the car, "I've been living abroad, so I don't know that one," and he starts pulling out a cardboard sign, that's FUNNY! Why? People get picked up on "Ainori" by holding a cardboard sign that reads "Ainori," and the fact that he used his stint on "Ainori" as reason for his ignorance on modern urban myths was clever. But again, those are things people won't pick up on.
It's sad that this show has been getting poor ratings on this site. It really is a clever show. It's well made, has a stellar cast, great stories and has become somewhat of a cultural icon in Japan--it really is that big there. Heck, the book in "Trick 2," "Donto Koi Chojo Gensho"? You can BUY it. A REAL, HARDCOVER BOOK--exactly like you see on TV! I kid you not! I was going to buy one!
So, watch this show with an open mind, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me. I may be able to help explain some things. And I apologize for the occassional poor translations if you're living in CA watching this show--our lead translator is terrible, and I wind up trying to fix all her mistakes (most of the time, I wind up having to re-do most of the show on two days notice!). But with time constraints and jokes that don't translate, perfection is not always possible. [SPOILERS] Trick 2 is BACK! Ueda has just become a full-fledged professor and has released another book called, "Donto Koi Chojo Gensho". ^^ Again, he is called upon by the people who've read his books to investigate "supernatural" happenings. And again, he either tricked or coerce Yamada to join him in his quests. Like my previous review & comments for Trick, this sequel also has the formula: TRICK = Thrilling + Romantic + Intriguing + Comical + Knowledgeable!
The drama is thrilling and exciting in a subtle way and you can't help keep trying to figure out the mysteries behind each episode. And of course, it's also intriguing about how some people use the paranormal and ESP as an excuse to commit crimes. For instance, one of my personal favourite was the story of the Ghost Taxi which was both scary and exhilarating. It was one of the harder plot to figure out, and the plot was mystifying with so many loopholes to figure out. And what really surprised me was that the episode's ending was kind of unexpected.
Trick is also kind of romantic, but the romance part here is rather subtle unless you pay really close attention to all those hints given throughout the drama, especially towards the end. Of course, Trick 2 is not a love or romance dorama, so you can't really expect emotional tears-jerker scenes. Rather, the "romanctic" part here is more sweet and simple, a kind of a more discreet, innocent love. ^_~ The ending of Trick 2 is beautifully sad; you'd almost believe that they'll never meet again. But while the ending is sad, it's also kind of comical. :)
Trick 2 is also as funny as Trick but many jokes are cultural based and can be confusing to most people. For instance, in the last episode about the mysterious forest, Yamada made some references to "Shiina Kippei", so unless you know who "Shiina Kippei" is (which you'd most probably know if you've saw the casts), most likely, you won't understand the joke there. Also, the funny parts in Trick 2 are more subtle than Trick, so you probably need to follow the story closely to be able to "catch" the joke (otherwise you'd probably just ended up more confused ^^;). Yabe, his wig and his sidekick are also back, but with less funnier antics than Trick 1, which is rather unfortunate coz I did enjoy watching Yabe and his sidekick in action. :)
And lastly, knowledge. You can actually learn a lot from the Trick series, depending on how you look at it. Beside learning the various "tricks" from Yamada in the drama, you can actually learn bits of knowledge while Yamada and Ueda were unraveling the conspiracies behind each seemingly "supernatural" happenings. Which is why I like watching mysteries and detective shows as I can actually gain bits of knowledges and tips from the show. ^^

I wish they made more dramas like this now days rather than just plain old slapstick and silly teen dramas. Ueda, now with his own tv show and popular book, loves the attention he is now getting and even has his own hilarious motto. I now have higher respect for Nakama, whom I thought fluked her way through Trick 1. Abe Hiroshi is, well...Hiroshi - the best j-actor I've seen. What I loved about Trick season 2 was that it continued from season 1, but elaborated or expanded on all the GOOD points. The relationship between Ueda and Yamada didn�ft continue to be flirtatious, sly, and innocent like in the first season. Instead there was growth and understanding between the two. It was more mature and showed some depth. The humour in the second season was also more refined and sharp. I laughed more than I did in the first season and this is probably because the characters seemed to mesh better this season. I found the stories to be more mysterious and suspenseful this season, and less based on magic. I haven�ft decided if this is a good thing or a bad, but either way I felt that this season was a good and seamless extension of the last. If you liked Trick, you'll like Trick 2. How much more or less is relative, but you'll like it. I say this because this show is the same show as Trick, and they just extended it and made more mysteries for them to solve. The characters are the same, the settings, and the mysteries are all just about the same. It is true that this series focuses most of its attention on murders, but it follows the same plot pattern that made the first Trick so enjoyable. There were a lot of could have done this or should have done that, but they took the same idea, the same characters, and threw them in for another set of new mysteries, and what do you get? Ah yes! More Trick! I felt like this time around, that the "tricks" weren't quite as interesting... There was just something about the two main characters that felt... off. I love this dorama. Even though I never finshed watching Trick 1 so I cant compare the two, but Trick 2 was pretty funny. I love the acting of Abe Hiroshi and Nakama Yukie. They have a wierd but funny chemistry together. I found myself cracking up all the time throughout the dorama. Highly recommended. I am not a converted Trick lover, and I cant wait to finish watching Trick 1 and Trick 3. Also there is Trick the movie which I am dying to watch. I loved Trick 2 equally as Trick 1. Of course they couldn't make it the same as part one and they didn't! I like the new cases and I thought there was plenty of chemistry between Yamada and Ueda. I do agree on the point that there is little character development in terms of their personal lives/history but I think that it was the way they wanted it. It gives the characters more mysterious quality that I like. I watched this series of trick AFTER the third one...but anyway. It was pretty entertaining. I don't know how the producers came up with some of the stuff that is in there. I found some parts confusing and scary though (this is really lame...I know...but I had a nightmare about the face taxi from this series). Trick II looses nothing from the original drama Trick. Same magic among the cast and same interesting mysterious stories. If you loved the first one like I did then you will love the 2nd one too. Also a side note that if you did not happen to see the first season but you have a chance to see Trick Ii then see it. This second season of Trick was excellent, but not as good as the first season. There is little buildup between the relationships of Ueda and Naoko, but there is a lot of comedy, and the cases are somewhat more murder related rather than trying to expose spiritualists. Wait! There's more! And it's even better than the first one! Yes, the crew from Trick are back, with more mysteries to solve. This season has more laughs, more sparks, more wig-moments. I laughed, I cried, I laughed so hard I cried. Try to find it with subtitles--I saw it with subs and without and it's a lot funnier when you don't have to puzzle through the jokes (there are so many of them!!). I think Nakama Yukie and Abe Hiroshi together work wonderfully--I'm really cheering them on, hoping those characters get together. The second installment of the trick series didn't convince me much. It lacked a lot of the captivating details from the original trick. The jokes weren't as funny either, there were a couple of laughs here and there but not enough to hook me up to the series. I did finish the season though because I'll start watching the third season too. Hmm. Trick 2 is a hilarious show, especially when you are able to understand the japanese language jokes. IMHO they concentrated too much on the humorous part this time. Unless Trick 1, this squel lacks a constant in the storyline, and the "tricks" are not as nearly as tensioning as in the original Dorama from 2000. It's between 6 and 7 points, I think. Hope for a good Trick 3.

It just keeps getting better! (I can't wait to find season three, and the movie ^_^) Ueda and Naoko are such great characters, and I love how, even though Ueda is supposed to be such an esteemed professor, he knows he can't make a move without clever Naoko at his side. And you can't forget the detective (I can't remember his name at the moment ^^; ) and his precious wig...but I've never seen such an inept cop.

Interesting cases, good dynamics between the leads, although Nakama's acting still leaves a lot to be desired. The show is generally funny with a lot of parady on other mystery movies/doramas (the Blair Witch spoof for example).
