Although 23 year old Yamada Naoko (Nakama Yukie) is a "super" magician, she is continously fired and constantly hounded by her landlady for the rent being late. After being fired once again, her boss shows her an ad of a physics professor, a non-believer of all things magical, offering money to anyone who can prove to him that magic is real. Desperately needing the money, Naoko accepts the challenge, which is how she comes to meet Professor Ueda (Abe Hiroshi). Falling prey to her simple magic tricks, Ueda is impressed, and enlists Naoko to help him uncover the tricks behind a local cult. Their hilarious antics, along with those of police officer Yabe, leads them onto further mysteries, all with tricks needing to be solved and revealed! | |

| 1. | TricKy!! [Rating: 9/10] With a bit of thrilling suspense + mind-boggling mysteries + comical humor + great chemistry between the casts, this cocktail of a dorama easily got me hooked right to the end! ^^
The story kicks off with Yamada Naoko (Nakama Yukie), a poor magician, who, in an attempt to get some money to pay off her rent, goes for a interview test organised by Ueda Jiro (Abe Hiroshi), an assistant physics professor. The purpose of his test is to look for people with real supernatural powers (or ESP, or sixth sense, whatever you call it) for some seemingly supernatural investigations. Ueda, like Yamada, doesn't believe in the paranormal and ESP; instead, they believe that for every unexplained thing, there's a big conspiracy behind. Ironically, Ueda is "tricked" by Yamada the first time they met, and off they go (actually, I would say Yamada was either "forced" or "tricked" to go) to investigate and expose the various supernatural happenings as elaborated scams.
The drama is arranged such that there are different stories (episodes) in the entire drama and each story's time-frame is rather short. However, the story are somewhat connected together by Yamada's past, which involve her mother's (Nogiwa Yoko) birthplace (and past as well). The various episodes cleverly cover up Yamada's past, but still drop enough hints to the viewer. Yamada's relationship to her mother's past is somewhat revealed in the last episode, and I think the last episode is a refreshing change from the usual "Ueda get asked for help - Ueda invades Yamada's house - and Ueda tricked (or bribed) Yamada into the case" starting :)
The stories are all very well planned and can be really scary at times, and the various plots are very clever and quite engaging. :) Yukie did very well as the cute and smart-witted magician with the weird laughter, abeit a little self conscious, and Hiroshi was very funny as the faint-hearted, know-all smart alec who unfortunately, does get tricked many times. Namase Katsuhisa also played fumbling Detective Yabe really well; in fact, it's also Yabe (and his wig) and his sidekick who, apart from Ueda and Yamada, provides comic relief throughout the show!
I love the ending especially; it was really kind of unexpected and hilarious, abeit a little romantic! ^^ You'd actually wished Yamada and Ueda would get together. I do wished they showed how Yamada and Ueda got themselves out of that kind of situation though! *lol*
TRICK = Thrilling + Romantic + Intriguing + Comical + Knowledgeable! ^_~ | Reviewed by Yayoi on 2 December 2004 | 2. | Hilarious! [Rating: 9/10] Okay, I'm a sucker for detective stuff, so I kind of liked figuring out the tricks behind each episode. But above the interesting tricks used in each story, I loved the chemistry between Abe Hiroshi and Nakama Yukie.
Nakama Yukie plays "Yamada Naoko," a magician with a distaste for fraudulent spritualists and magicians. Her mother is a calligraphy teacher and her late father was a famous magician who also exposed many false mediums and spiritualists. Abe Hiroshi's character, "Ueda Jiro," is an assistant physics professor at Nihon Ka-Gi-Dai (Nihon Kagaku Gijutsu Daigaku). He meets Naoko when he puts out a call for real spiritualists or mediums (I won't say why). He, like Naoko, doesn't believe in spiritual mediums and the sorts, but because of his book smarts, he fails to see outside of the box, and often gets fooled.
Also starring Namase Katsuhisa as "Detective Yabe," and "Nogiwa Yoko as Naoko's mother, "Satomi."
I think their similarities--they're both anti-social, immature and strange--makes for the perfect love-hate relationship that so many great male-female comedy duos have. You wind up caring about them, and that, ultimately, is what makes this show so great! Hence, the two sequels, the movie, the books, the manga...you get the idea.
What to look for? The ad-libbed humor, which was right-on and their perfect comedic timing! For the most part, the stories were in two parts, to create drama, I suppose. Only episode 8, I think, was the only stand-alone episode. | Reviewed by tsuyoshi7nhwi on 21 November 2003 | 3. | Abe and Nakama do the Trick [Rating: 7/10] Abe Hiroshi and Nakama Yukie are great together. Their chemistry within the context of the plot was really fun to watch and truly made this drama a success.
There isnft an overall story, but instead a collection of stories. Each story (2-3 episodes in length) can stand on its own with no connection to the next one. The only consistency is the relationship between Abe and Nakama, the police officers, and Nakamafs mother. Usually I get tired while watching a drama where there is no common thread between each episode, but because Hiroshi and Nakama were so great, I forgave Trick this once annoyance.
I like mysteries. I enjoy dramas where I can play around with figuring out the answers, and because therefs a gtrickh in each episode, I really enjoyed trying to find what they were.
Ifm a little surprised that this drama was popular enough to have two more seasons (plus a special). Although it was interesting and fun to watch, it did get a bit redundant. There wasnft an actual conclusion to the drama, which irked me, so perhaps Ifll find more closure in the next two seasonsc
I absolutely LOVED the constant gflat-chesth and gbig penish jokes, especially when they were symbolized through the drama (fried eggs and sausage LOL!). Letfs hope they reappear as well. | Reviewed by Wynter on 22 September 2007 | 4. | Abe Hiroshi is Mr J-dorama [Rating: 8/10] What can one say about Trick that hasn't been said before? An intelligent, quick-witted (and low-brow when it wants to be) comedy about two completely different people who find themselves digging around to expose hoaxes behind proclaimed magical phenomena. Sound a bit tedious? It is, but the acting is phenomenal in itself. Having found Nakama playing annoying and overwrought characters in the past (Gokusen and the horrible sequel that followed) she finally (even though Trick began before it) really nails her character. As always, Mr. reliable and in my opinion Mr J-dorama himself, Abe Hiroshi is brilliant, bringing his comedic A-game to this somewhat plot-deprived yet unique show. The drama hits a perplexing situation at its end, but all in all, an excellent beginning to a drama franchise that excels in leaps and comedic bounds. | Reviewed by dekatrain on 11 December 2007 | 5. | For those who like suspense... [Rating: 8/10] I found this drama very entertaining because it was like reading a mystery "whodunnit" kind of book. Yeah, I know a lot of people compare this to X-files, but I don't think they are very similar;Trick is more comedic not as serious. I like the way the mystery is finally explained, and the plot gets you hooked easily. It is considered a bit scary, you can tell they made it that way on purpose. The director adds his own twist to this and makes it even weirder, but not too much that it's out of this world or anything like that. It's a great J drama for those that want something different. I would give it a higer rating except they the drama didn't come through for me at the end.......too bad. | Reviewed by Hiro Toyo on 28 October 2004 | 6. | Delightful and Weird! [Rating: 8/10] I thoroughly enjoyed Trick! It was so strange and funny... I think I like sort of "odd" dramas the best of all. Trick is often as odd as it gets. The mystery behind each of the spiritualists was suprising and engrossing, and the constant "flirtation" between the two main characters was well played out. Nakama Yukie, especially, is so delightful in ANY role she takes on (Even Pocky commercials!). I first began to like her in Gokusen, but her role in Trick has truly cemented my fandom. She's so cute! Abe Hiroshi as well, gave a superb and quirky performance. He can be so scary yet so funny at the same time. I look forward to seeing more of his work! [Rating: 7/10] There seems to be general consent that this drama was fun to watch yet confusing at times. I'd have to say I agree but maybe
this is the beauty of the drama so to say. It built up a sense of "huh" and left you with a sense of "Ohh so thats what happned". Despite all the confusion I really liked the chemistry between the two main characters; it always left me saying "Cmon! When are you guys gonna hook up already!". I also enjoyed how this drama could throw in random blips of comedy in midst of seriousness and suspense. It really helped lighten up the mood of the drama. It reminds me of a Japanese version of X-files but in a more light hearted way. | 8. | It's crooked... [Rating: 10/10] Very funny and entertaining with plenty of comedic moments from all the cast, yamada's laugh cracks me up and the chemistry between all the cast is great. Lots of funny personal jokes between the cast too, and some great music especially the ending theme which brings each episode to a nice eerie closure. The ending to episodes can be realing un-nerving too, an episode will just end and the haunting end theme will just kick in and leave you thinking about what just happened, probably one of the greatest dramas ever created. | Reviewed by Tatakau on 3 October 2005 | 9. | Very very good and addictive~ [Rating: 10/10] Out of all the doramas, I think this series is soooo refreshing, original and awesome. The actors are all great and it HAS everything! Great plot, mysteries, a bit of the supernatural, comedy, and a "is it there or not" romance between to the two main characters. What's not to love about it? Highly recommended. Love Nakama Yukie and Abe Hiroshi. Onitsuka Chihiro's song is excellent too. By confusing, I mean somethings are not clearly explained enough, and sometimes scenes change too quickly, so you cannot comprehend what happened. Also, this is like a television show more than a drama, every two to three episodes, the plot of the episode changes a little bit, but the characters remain the same. It is wonderful, the acting is superb, as is the music and comedy. | Reviewed by Hanada Tattsu on 22 September 2003 | 11. | not bad [Rating: 7/10] good music helps out in creating a light but suspenseful mood for this drama. nakama and abe have great chemistry together and have a lot of jokes moments together. the drama has a lot of bizaare moments but it jus adds to its originality.

| 1. | Comments by supermidget [Rating: 8/10] [On DVD] It's about a female magician (Nakama Yukie as Naoko) who joins forces with an male physicist (Hiroshi Abe as *forgot*) in order to expose the fraud of people who claim to have supernatural powers. There's a lot of comedy in it, also some sex jokes but i.m.o. they don't really fit in this show. Anyway the series is devided in several short stories, and for now, the first and second have about the same plot. [edit:] The other stories after it are interesting as well (and different), there's also a story which is only one episode. Good to keep the pace going. The last story is plot-wise the most interesting, as it reveals things about Naoko and her mother's past. Things I liked the most about this drama is the chemistry between Yukie and Abe, both actors will soon become your favorites. Second is the interesting tricks that happen in the show. Sometimes explanations of illusions seem to be a bit far-fetched but in context still believable. I'm looking forward to see Trick 2 and 3. | 2. | Comments by Sasaya [Rating: 9/10] The combination of witty banter, strange phenomena, and an almost nonexistent romantic tie between two people make for an excellent drama to watch. With TRICK, I was thoroughly amused and caught in suspense at the right moments. The only problem I see with this series is that one must have enough knowledge with the Japanese language and culture to understand most of the jokes. Most of the time, things are lost in translation, and so the punchline may not have a successful effect with some people. I'll admit I was lost a couple of times, but I still love the series nonetheless.
With three seasons and two movies, I'm impressed that a series has gone this far. I love the running jokes and the possible romance between Naoko and Ueda, although a part of me is still screaming for something to spark sooner or later. I definitely recommend this series. | 3. | Comments by donna8157 [Rating: 7/10] This was a fun drama to watch involving the cases of a young female magician and a renown physicist. Nakama Yukie and Abe Hiroshi do a magnificent job portraying each scenario and I thought that the two of them had great chemistry together. Although before watching this series, I hadn't thought it would be possible.
Each case that the two of them solve - proving that there are no such thing as spiritualists - was really interesting. There were some parts that I thought were rather creepy. Death also seems to come easy to the side characters in this series.
SPOILER - I thought that the creepiest case was with the woman who believed that she could kill people with just using her mind. | 4. | Comments by Susan [Rating: 8/10] I thoroughly enjoyed Trick! Ueda! I couldn't stop laughing when he fainted after seeing that floating vision of Okaasama. Seeing him sprawled on the the floor in that fashion, who could help but laugh? I think the one problem with this drama is that there are too many cultural jokes in the plot, which is fine if you understand, but for non-Japanese people like me, you will be left feeling very very confused. But overall, a nicely written drama, a must see for Nakama and Abe fans. | 6. | Comments by aik0 [Rating: 6/10] Like any suspense drama, the long subtitles of explanationatory dailogue would make you sleepy. There are loopholes considering that the police are involved, even the involvement is minimal. The police dont have no computer, database or profile matching like what we saw in 24. But still it is better than "Fugoh Keiji [xY]". However, the ecentricity of the characters as well as the comedic chemistry between the two leads make up for the pitfall of the plot. The female lead's brand of laughing and the sudden shift of horror into comedy is the most un4gettable. | 7. | Comments by Yayoi [Rating: 9/10] TRICK? Thrilling + Romantic (kind of ^^;) + Intriguing + Comical + Knowledgeable (You can actually learn something, or some tricks, from this ^_~)! The casts are great; the plots, engaging; and the entire drama, hilarious and yet so mystifying! Yabe and his sidekick are so funny! *lol* I like Episode 10 and the ending. It's so beautifully funny and kinda romantic! :p Wonder where that place is.... Anyway, this is one of my fave drama, along with the other sequels, #2 and #3! (^^,) Details? Read my review! ^^ | 8. | Comments by EstherM [Rating: 8/10] This review refers actually to all seasons - I wasn't convinced when I watched the first three episodes - too slow, too cheap, too weird. After that I kind of got addicted to it (kind of because I took a year break between season 1 and 2), and what seemed boring became compelling. Nicely different and sometimes cheek in tongue! I became a faithful follower as of season 2 and have seen all the SPs and movies (minus movie nr 3 which is still showing in cinemas). | 9. | Comments by Cerebus [Rating: 8/10] Entertaining comedy mystery show somewhat reminiscent of the UK show Jonathan Creek. Abe Hiroshi is on top form as the the assistant professor, and he has excellent chemistry with Nakama Yukie. The humour is somewhat random, and definitely Japanese. The running joke about the relative size of certain body parts of the protagonists is hilarious. The only problem is the pacing which can be a little haphazard. | 10. | Comments by Akiiness [Rating: 9/10] Major jokes, this drama! Loved it a lot!! The chemistry between Nakama Yukie and Abe Hiroshi really brought out the drama; I mean, that's probably the only reason I watched the whole Trick series. Truthfully, there's nothing special about the plot and by the time you get to Trick 3, you'd probably catch on to the tricks even before they do. Anyhow, it's still one of my favourite comedies & drama. :) | 11. | Comments by Szabotage [Rating: 10/10] Brilliant! Hilarious! If you have to get just one drama, get this one! (And it's sequels!) Nakama Yukie as the heroine Yamada just sparkles. She is wonderful. And Abe Hiroshi is a perfect match for her, with an excellent talent for physical comedy. You will not regret seeing this one! Mystery, action, comedy, a touch of romance, and a cop with a very strange wig! This drama has it all! | 12. | Comments by Sleepingstar [Rating: 8/10] A bit strange dorama, rather under produced, which works well for me and fits right in light atmosphere of the show (over acting, silly and stupid, just looks cheap, plot holes). So it isn't by any means perfect, but I just loved style of the show, which is also why this dorama was nice and easy to watch. Also Nakama's laugh, what can I say... HAHAHAHA, crazy good stuff. p.s. It's crooked! | 13. | Comments by Nobita-kun [Rating: 8/10] I became hooked to this series after stumbling upon it on TV one night. I was drawn in by its unique blend of dark, bizarre storytelling and slapstick humor. Abe Hiroshi and Nakama Yukie have amazing chemistry. I honestly have never laughed so much watching a J-drama. Trick is definitely worth a look if you're in the mood for something fresh and creative. | 14. | Comments by babysports [Rating: 7/10] Scary, intelligent, provoking and highly hilarious!!! Both Abe and nakama gave their characters life when they acted as ueda and yamada. The movie was a plus for this whole trick series.
Definitely the starters of the detective and supernatural style stories that are coming along now.
A must watch for those who wants a good laugh and brain tease. | 15. | Comments by yume [Rating: 10/10] TRICK--a drama for those who're sick of the typical lovey-dovey, over-serious dramas out there! If you're into magic, engimas and a cheesy laugh, you ought to watch this! Abe Hiroshi and Nakama Yukie will crack you up...and the slew of oddball characters will have you on the edge of your seat trying to crack the riddle before our hilarious duo does! | 16. | Comments by meiohsetsuna [Rating: 8/10] I love Nakama Yukie. The boob jokes never get old! And the penis ones for that matter... These two actors have great chemistry together. They are a Japanese version of Mulder and Scully, in a lighter and happier tone - I am sure of it. Add in the comic relief of the cops... truly this is an Xfiles parody, is it not? Ahh but I loved it anyway. | 17. | Comments by Tu_triky [Rating: 7/10] This doramas was somewhat entertaining but I was expecting more considering the abundant praise. The comic duo of Abe Hiroshi and Yukie Nakama was pleasing to watch but the hokey villians were not very engaging....how many wack looking phonies in flamboyant costumes can one bear to look at it. A poor man's X-files....quite poor indeed. | 18. | Comments by DDT [Rating: 8/10] An entertaining drama regarding a professor and magician teaming up to solve people who claim to have paranormal powers. The reoccuring theme was that the magician's father (who was also a magician) was killed by someone with paranormal powers... keeps putting forth the point that "Paranormal powers exists". A great theme song as well. | 19. | Comments by eftermiddag [Rating: 9/10] hahaha hilarious!! really good charachters, really good mysteries and really good humour!! and the show also contains maehara kazuki a.k.a. 1. | qwiksXnd If I would sumarize Trick in one sentence it would be "A lower budget, but funner Japanese version of the X-Files". The cast was great: Nakama and Abe, the two detectives, and the hot mom (milf imo). The soundtrack get way overused though... it starts to get annoying hearing the same chimes and sound effect for each clue and each punchline. Still, a great show. If a little repetitive with the way the mysteries are solved. | 2. | saya317 i got this, expecting something on the comedic side. it had its funny moments(perfectly-timed), but it had such an eerie feel to it, too. i got addicted and couldn't stop watching until the mystery was revealed. the two leads were great, too. this is a great drama. i'm looking forward to seeing the two sequels. | 3. | Yayoi TRICK = Thrilling + Romantic (kind of ^^;) + Intriguing + Comical + Knowledgeable (You can actually learn something, or some tricks, from this ^_~).
