She has no family because her father is dead and her mother abandoned her. Boo-hoo, let me guess, next up terminal illness, right? No, just a potentially life threatening one. Japanese dramas use these types of gimmicks the same way Hollywood uses sex and violence. But alas, in the end I was won over by Mitsushima Hikari's acting. Since I first saw her in Ohisama, various other dramas, and most notably in Soredemo Ikite Yuku, I was struck by how amazingly she can portray awkwardness. It's a very strange thing to see an actress typecast in such a unique way, though I imagine it would be more satisfying as an actress than say, being something more typical like "cute", or "funny." I presume the day will come when I will no longer be so easily charmed by something as abstract as awkwardness, but I'm not there yet. |
