Focus, concentration, proper posture and good release are the hallmarks of a good bowler. Welcome to Golden Bowl bowling alley. A bit rundown and small but no worse for wear, the Golden Bowl is stockbroker Shu Akutagawa's favorite haunt. A regular, he likes nothing better then the rumble of the bowl running down the alley and crash and crackle of the pins tumbling down. When Hitomi Sakura - a housewife - makes an appearance at the Golden Bowl things start to heat up as Shu teams up with her to challenge some pro bowlers. Will Shu be as lucky with Hitomi as he is with the pins? | NTV |

| 1. | Strike! [Rating: 8/10] Takeshi Kaneshiro can come off seeming so intense that his projects may seem too serious. But there are exceptions. The Hong Kong film CHUNGKING EXPRESS had an almost French, quality in Kaneshiro's part of the movie, contributing at partly to its status as a classic.
GOLDEN BOWL is Japanese, of course, but Kaneshiro plays the role of a salaryman who avoids hanging around with acquaintances at work to bowl at his favorite haunt, the run-down "Golden Bowl." He becomes a bowling partner to Hitomi Kuroki - a charming housewife burdened with marital problems.
From the start, the drama is light and engaging, a disarming tribute to this unfashionable sport. Kaneshiro has been better known for this good looks than his acting, but he's affable enough to make the drama continually engaging. The breezy humor and light mood are a good match with the performers.
GOLDEN BOWL is underrated, but most people who have given it a chance have fallen for its spirit of light humor, and maybe even for its nominal standing as a "sports" drama. Its format is pretty predicable, episode after episode: a personal drama is played out in a climactic bowling match, highlighted by spirited banter between Takeshi and Kuroki.
The cast is likable, but watch out for a supporting role from JPOP starlet Aya Matsuura in an early acting effort, as well an appearance from a young Nanako Matsushima. | Reviewed by jdoramadotcom on 9 July 2011 | 2. | Golden Ball, Golden Couple [Rating: 9/10] Although there is a lot of plot action right in the first episode, I found Golden Bowl really hard to get into. It wasnft until the third episode where things started to pick up for me, and finally by episode five I was an eager watcher.
The whole gbowlingh concept is really abstract. I like how the drama revolves around the characters that hang out at this bowling alley, but really the sport of bowling is just an excuse to play with the characters. The bowling alley could easily be replaced by a bar, or a park, or another sport, etc. Its link to the overall plot is weak and serves only as a location.
The plot revolving around the characters, however, is very interesting and mysterious. Youfre never quite given the whole picture for each character, and therefore you need to watch carefully in order to collect all the pieces. I like that about this drama, and it helped me look over the uselessness of the bowling element.
The love story is one the best Ifve seen. It was slow in coming but very developed in its slowness. Hitomi and Takeshi were very convincing and I stopped watching the gactorsh and actually believed the characters to be real. The casting for the supporting cast was well done and I was impressed with how naturally they all worked together. | Reviewed by Wynter on 19 October 2007 | 3. | An accident caused by destiny but made dreams come [Rating: 10/10] An accident caused by destiny but made dreams come true - that's what this drama is all about. The love in Golden Bowl in stronger than those specifc love dramas. You really get to see how the bond builds and truly hope for them to be together. The two leads are excellent Shu-chan and Hitomi-chan, both are charismatic and they have such excellent dynamics with each other!!! Highly highly recommended. It is predictable yes, but predictable in the fact that you will definitely be moved beyond your expectation. | Reviewed by FierceStriker on 12 March 2004 | 4. | Enjoyable [Rating: 9/10] Well first, the discription by the site is a little off. The Hitomi that's the famale lead is not the same Hitomi that the Male lead was in love with, unless something major happens later in the story that I don't know of (I'm at ep. 3). Still guessing it's wrong though since she's older than he is in the story (and in real life I presume).
It's a great, funny story... every ep does seem to have a bowling contest at the end, so be prepared... there's a lot of bowling and banter. Still it's one of the most enjoyable dramas I've seen in a good while. | Reviewed by astargatis on 11 September 2003 | 5. | I Don't Like it [Rating: 3/10] The story was about bowling and about people's problems, yeah even though it's happy ending I don't like it. I prefer Takeshi play with a younger women than the older women, Japan make younger men-older women love story as a trend and I really don't like it (except Long vacation, because the story is really good). Beside Takeshi acted quite bad in this drama. Also this drama is quite boring.
If you like Takeshi you may watch this drama, but if you don't like this kind of love story (younger men-older women) then don't see it. | Reviewed by rinarina on 2 March 2006 | 6. | impressive amazingly [Rating: 9/10] have not finished the series yet but from what i had watched, i find it very entertaining. with such a name, i thot it was the typical, has crisis -> solve crisis type of drama with a bit of romance thrown into the mix. in my opinion, the emphasis seems to be more on the non-bowling type of stuff but rather on the lives of the bowlers. the characterization is there and the story line. i cannot wait to see how it ends...but from what i had seen, i think it is a very impressive dorama. | Reviewed by zbl on 12 September 2003 | 7. | Who would've thought... Overall, if you can accept this drama as a light entertainment by not being too critical about how the society views this sort of relationships etc, you can easily notice how the casts are convincing and be able to sense the chemistry all over "Golden Bowl".

| 1. | Comments by donna8157 [Rating: 8/10] This being a sports drama was a lot of fun to watch. The bowling competitions were only so-so and the fact that the boss kept accepting the challenges from the landlord got to be pretty repetitive. The main highlight, sports-wise, in the drama were the different opponents that Hitomi and Akutagawa had to face up against. Other than that, the bowling competitions were pretty cheesy especially the ending scene when Akutagawa would (not surprisingly) knock down the last pin(s) with the golden bowling ball.
However, what kept me watching was the pretty complicated romance story and the fact that I really liked Takeshi Kaneshiro's character in this series. Hitomi is married and Akutagawa likes her, but the fact that he continuously encourages her to stay in the marriage even after she learns that her husband is having an affair is very sweet. It was definitely nice to see the end of this series. Plus, I found that the kiss between Hitomi and Akutagawa was definitely very sexy.
Overall, it's a fun sports series to watch, but what will keep you watching is not the bowling, but the love story in it. | 2. | Comments by EstherM [Rating: 10/10] I gave this a 10 because I have watched this at least 4 or 5 times. I adore the positively uncool setting, an old bowling hall. The chemistry between the main leads, Kaneshiro Takeshi and Kuroki Hitomi, is great, their age gap doesnLt matter at all.
Both of them are good in lying to themselves and not admitting failures. I like the moments when they have their frank dialogues - mostly when playing (and often winning) tournaments.
The main characters feel real, because the drama shuns away from the usual "weak woman that needs to be saved - strong man thatLll protect her" scheme. Hitomi, albeit a housewife, is strong and takes responsability for her life and failures, Shu is weaker but strong enough to not choose the wrong girl.
And letLs not forget the entertaining sidekicks, Gorilla, Midori, Akira and Owner. | 3. | Comments by FierceStriker [Rating: 10/10] An accident caused by destiny but made dreams come true - that's what this drama is all about. The other characters werenLt that great but i could care less, Akutagawa and Hitomi relationship made up for everything the secondary characters lacked.
The soundtrack was the worst i ever saw in a j-dorama, but it didnLt kill any of the fun from the dorama.
It has comedy but not the kind of comedy i like, but the romance part was awesome, really great.
Kudos to the two leads. | 5. | Comments by blakmetalik [Rating: 7/10] Nice lighthearted love comedy about a guy who meets a woman at a bowling alley. She shares his passion for bowling, but also shares the same name of his long gone ex-girlfriend (the summary above is not correct). Great chemistry between Kaneshiro Takeshi and Kuroki Hitomi - they make a cute couple! The episodes are somewhat formulaic but they get a little better past ep 4 or 5. I liked the supporting cast of characters and the classic songs (not sure if they are actually sung by Paul Anka). "You are my desitiny..." | 6. | Comments by sadacori [Rating: 9/10] I wasn't all that enthusiastic about watching this drama at first since I'm not much of a sports (or bowling) fan, but after I started on the first episode, I realized that even though the drama was mostly set in a bowling alley, it did not center around bowling at all. This drama is about the relationships that the bowlers and regulars had with each other. There is a slight romantic subplot in this drama and many other conflicts going on. I think this is a must-see for those who like old-school dramas. | 7. | Comments by Dabbies [Rating: 7/10] One of Takeshi Kaneshirofs latest dramas after precious time & love 2000c & he still look so kakoii in it...!! I LOVE KANESHIRO IN THIS!!! Mou, he was so incredibly adorable and sweet....he's such a tall handsome guy, there were some things that I found really funny in his OOC mannerisms. Some things that were cute: "gomenachai~" / "ohh yes~!" / "oui madame!" / "iyaaan!"...
I was also a sucker for the oldies theme in the show - some really good songs used here. Another Yashima-Kantoku sakuhin that I absolutely loved. | 9. | Comments by yolande [Rating: 8/10] a not-so-cliche drama making fun of all sorts of cliches, with much deeper and complex themes beneath the surface (unsurprisingly, considering that it is a work by nojima shinji). it's interesting to watch, and rather amusing at times. a rather well-made drama, with not-too-bad acting from the cast. the chemistry between the leads is above average. overall, enjoyable, but maybe not too addictive. | 10. | Comments by Cerebus [Rating: 8/10] Fantastic central performances, both Kaneshiro Takeshi and Kuroki Hitomi are outstanding and have excellent chemistry.
Their interactions and the complicated nature of their romance turned the show into something special. Nojima Shinji's script ranges from the profound and moving to just plain silly and dumb, I wish there could have been less of the latter, also I wish there was less bowling. | 11. | Comments by jdfan [Rating: 9/10] I like Kaneshiro in a romantic comedy setting. The music and dry humor is weird at times but the story is exciting and left me wanting more from the relationship of the 2 main characters. Kuroki is as charming as ever in this one and Kaneshiro Takeshi plays a great lead. A nice little underrated drama that you all should watch, especially those who enjoy bowling. | 13. | Comments by z123_us [Rating: 8/10] FUN FUN FUN alll the way, and well i will be frank, i LOVE hitomi kuroki so for me the drama was excellent. nothing serious to drag u into thinking too much of whats happening, so a lot of light watching stuff. even takeshi is also good and a fun guy. I felt it especially became even more interesting after the first half was over. Worth seeing. | 14. | Comments by hero too good! Storyline is rather weak. The main point of the drama, the competition, also gets inevitably repetitive. Nevertheless, this drama does a good job in helping me end the last hour of my precious weekend~ | 16. | Comments by Bsalez [Rating: 8/10] A prove dat Japanese ppl can turn simple thing to a good movie..

That alone was a delight to watch! | 18. | Comments by tikleabubble [Rating: 6/10] Not bad. A light-hearted drama. I just didn't get the romance between takeshi and the female lead.
