I am now more comfortable with my Japanese language teacher and feel I could ask her to help me (really you guys) translate a small portion of "Making Of" or the "Final Concert" if that would any help. At this stage I don't want to ask her to do a lot but if there is a small portion you have in mind let me know. I will transfer the audio to a WAV file and send it to her.
The lady translating the Making of videos told me today she is almost done the last part, so don't worry about that.
The Concert is pretty darn long. My person said before she would be doing it, but maybe later I can look through some parts that look like they may be particularly interesting.
But do you have the stuff from the DVD that has pictures? There are two sets. One has 60 pictures, but basically are dated and have only a little text for each - so I would think would be relatively easy to translate.
The other set has just 12 pics, but are actually all text divided into 2-6 blocks. So, far fewer things, but more text to translate.
If you have these picture sets, maybe that would be something you could get translated instead of the video for now.

Good news. I just got the rest of the "Making of" translation this morning. Will take me awhile to get it into movie form though.
Also, the translator told me after she gets back from Japan in a few weeks, she'll start working on the concert translation.
I read through what I got today - nothing really important. Mostly about locations, homes they used (and the people who owned them).
The older guy trying to teach at the Yamaha Music School was originally a jazz musician. The very last scene was the one where Juri is running into the home with the concert brochure - all the others had finished earlier.

dabigkahuna: A few months ago bmwracer was kind enough to set up a torrent for me for the final concert (and Making Of) but I only asked for the video so I don't believe any photos were sent. They would be interesting to see. If you care to send them to me I will look into translating them for you. I will give you an email address if you like so you don't have to set up a torrent, let me know. Thanks.
If the last scene was the one where Juri is running into the house (a winter scene) then it looks like the scenes inside the math teacher's house were shot during the summer (maybe). I still would like to know when they quit practicing as a group, I suspect it was after the summer shooting, but then I could (most likely) be wrong.
The translations for Making Of will be helpful in proving the girls really did play and it's not a fake. Some folks I have shown SG to are skeptical.
Stupid question: I see that everyone here highlight portions of other postings in order to comment on or answer questions, how do you do that?

The only quoting I know is to just chose "quote" from the options. I guess I could use the formatting info that shows up to set up individual, smaller, quotes, but I never tried. To much bother!
I would assume they stopped practicing whenever the last thing that needed to be filmed with the band happened. The concert scene was, as I recall, in December. The scene on the school roof was in February, but based on the different quality in the movie compared to the stuff in the Making Of vids, they may not have practiced much for that - just dubbed themselves from earlier recordings.
My feeling is that the First and Last Concert were not originally planned and, if not, they probably never practiced again until that was decided. It was probably a result of the movie coming out (September) and people not believing they could really play. So probably at least some weeks of intense practice leading up to the concert. Can't believe they would do anything after that and the touring. After all, they all have their own careers to work on.
Just hit the "Quote" button instead of the "Reply" button.
I think one of the problems is that a REPLY or NEW TOPIC is in one area while the QUOTE is in a completely different area. Not exactly a great user interface!
Just did a little updating of the file. This is going to be slow trying to get the timing right.
BTW, did you ever take what I sent you and see if you could adjust it easily for your separate Making Of vids?
I know with Handbrake, you can offset the timing, but I never tested it to see if I could offset it my a bunch of minutes or not. I haven't directly compared the quality of the three separate videos with the one combined one I have been using. If they are better, I'll eventually either want to split it up and use those vids or maybe join them together like what I have now - just better quality.

I got the subs split up over 3 videos(3rd one is incomplete), with the timing corrected. I think these are my own DVD rips of the making of videos, so i don't know if the timings would be the same as whatever is available for download(probably the same).

Well, the timings I use won't be the same because I have all three vids combined into one long one: 1 hr 35 min 29 seconds.
I've only gotten a short way through final part of this. I'm at about 1 hr 18 min, total. So a good 17 minutes or so to go, loaded with talking!

that's what i was kinda referring to. wasn't exactly easy, but i got split subs with corrected timings if anyone's lookin for em
Once I get this last part done, so you can get all three adjusted, I'd love to have the three separate subtitles so I can apply them to the original versions of the vids I have.

14.5 minutes still to finish. Doesn't sound like much, but even one minute can take a lot of work. Have to set the start and end of it, then figure out where to cut it up so it fits on screen, then go through each time and adjust them to fit. Then, invariably, when I test it, I'll find one or more that doesn't show up right. Seems that requires me to go in and edit for carriage returns. Apparently the videos use those to make things work right. I have no idea why it can look right on screen, but not work until I delete any carriage returns and reenter them.
And, finally, as I play it , I may find that a certain spot has to have the time changed. Usually I'll take maybe a 50 second section and maybe divide it into 7 parts - then give each part 7 seconds. But if a new person starts talking, or I have to translate some text on the screen, I need those things to start at a given spot - requiring changes to everything else.

Still have 9.5 minutes left. I got severely delayed on one section where I was having a hard time figuring out how to divide it up. The translation just didn't seem to match up well, so eventually I had to work backwards to reduce the questionable areas - and it was such a headache, I kept putting it off. Just finished that part, or at least the best I could do.

Well, I showed my teacher page 1 of 12 (out of the 12 image set) and displayed my best "I could really use some help" look but she didn't seem all that interested. I did manage to get her to say the text along the left side says something to the effect "Movie coming to these theaters". The text on the left side of the 3 boxes list prefectures (she didn't mention which ones) and then the towns and theaters. I was disappointed but I will continue to try. Time is money for her so I can't blame her all that much. Maybe I would have better luck with the 60 image set, less text. If I have some extra cash I will see what she can do in an hour or two.
