I noticed that a DVD rip of the classic mini-series Shogun is starting to be seeded on suprnova.org at the moment. Some links:

http://elissa.mobilefrenzy.com/get_mirror.php
http://stfunewb.org/suprnova//torrents/577/shogun_disc3_part1.torrent
http://stfunewb.org/suprnova//torrents/575/SHOGUN_DISC2_part2.torrent
http://stfunewb.org/suprnova//torrents/571/shogun_disc2_part1.torrent

(if direct torrent links don't work go via main suprnova URL)

I got the VHS a few years ago - hadn't realized DVD had been released. Are there any extras on the DVD? Documentaries, commentary etc.?

There's some documentary stuff on the last disc and some interviews with living cast members, but unfortunately no full-length commentary... Bleah.

And I always wondered why they left out subtitles from some scenes. Unless you know Japanese, you're sitting there going "Huh?" In the documentary, they try to justify the lack of subs, but it didn't fly with me.

All in all though, it's a terrific miniseries. I hadn't seen it since it was first televised in 1980, so it definitely was a treat... Big Grin

I suppose if a show is older than 10 years, it's no good, neh? Rolling eyes

If you're looking for blood and guts, then skip it. If you're looking for a good story and plot and you're interested in Japan, then it's worth your time.

I just finished Shôgun today. I think it's great! Didn't expect that much but I was surprised it was this good. It was great seeing veteran actor Toshiro Mifune again! I remember I saw him in the 3 DVD set: Seven Samurai, Yojimbo & Hidden Fortress!

Can't wait for "The Last Samurai".

The only thing that bothered me a little about Shôgun was the Gaijin-san who kept doing these outrageous things but hey I guess it wouldn't be much of a story if he didn't hehe.

Watch it if you haven't, and if you have... well watch it again!

Yep. Those are three great movies... If you like Mifune-san, you should check out Rashomon, Sanjuro (the ending is awesome!), and the Samurai Trilogy (Miyamoto Musashi, Duel at Ichijoji Temple, Duel on Ganryu Island)... Big Grin

Me too. The trailers look good. Big Grin

The miniseries follows James Clavell's book quite closely, so whatever Anjin-san did, it came right out of the book... hehe

I agree with bmwracer's sentiments, I also recommend you read the book:

(and read the rest of the books in the series too).

Arigato, ajb! Big Grin

Yes, the book Shogun is definitely worth a read... I haven't read any of the others (King Rat, Tai-Pan, Noble House, etc.), but I hear they're good as well...

If you get a chance read them. Next in the series is Tai-Pan, set around 1840 and definitly worth reading.

I saw the miniseries and wasn't impressed... I know the book's probably way better, but I'm not a very big book reader unless I'm really fascinated with the subject, like Miyamoto Musashi...

The story is good but the characters are *really* strong and there are some real surprises which catch you off-guard (maybe lost on you if you've soon the series!), which is pretty impressive. If you have a chance check it out, I doubt you'll be dissapointed.

I think my brother has a copy of it actually... I'll check it out. Smile

I got the dvd box set and it's awesome. Specially the special feature disc explains all the obsticals the producers and the crew had to gone through to make this epic tv series. Not to mention leading Jpn actress being a super babe. Lovey Eyes

it's german TV, dubbed of course... but I have to say the dubbing of the cinema version wasn't too bad, they actually avoided dubbing the japanese parts, which I'm very grateful for...

So like most of us in America, you don't know what they're saying in the Japanese scenes as well, which confuses those who are trying to follow the story... Wink
