I got the VHS a few years ago - hadn't realized DVD had been released. Are there any extras on the DVD? Documentaries, commentary etc.?

There's some documentary stuff on the last disc and some interviews with living cast members, but unfortunately no full-length commentary... Bleah.
And I always wondered why they left out subtitles from some scenes. Unless you know Japanese, you're sitting there going "Huh?" In the documentary, they try to justify the lack of subs, but it didn't fly with me.
All in all though, it's a terrific miniseries. I hadn't seen it since it was first televised in 1980, so it definitely was a treat...

I suppose if a show is older than 10 years, it's no good, neh?
If you're looking for blood and guts, then skip it. If you're looking for a good story and plot and you're interested in Japan, then it's worth your time.

Yep. Those are three great movies... If you like Mifune-san, you should check out Rashomon, Sanjuro (the ending is awesome!), and the Samurai Trilogy (Miyamoto Musashi, Duel at Ichijoji Temple, Duel on Ganryu Island)...

Me too. The trailers look good.
Quote: | The only thing that bothered me a little about Shôgun was the Gaijin-san who kept doing these outrageous things but hey I guess it wouldn't be much of a story if he didn't hehe. |
The miniseries follows James Clavell's book quite closely, so whatever Anjin-san did, it came right out of the book...

Arigato, ajb!
Yes, the book Shogun is definitely worth a read... I haven't read any of the others (King Rat, Tai-Pan, Noble House, etc.), but I hear they're good as well...

If you get a chance read them. Next in the series is Tai-Pan, set around 1840 and definitly worth reading.

I saw the miniseries and wasn't impressed... I know the book's probably way better, but I'm not a very big book reader unless I'm really fascinated with the subject, like Miyamoto Musashi...

I think my brother has a copy of it actually... I'll check it out.

So like most of us in America, you don't know what they're saying in the Japanese scenes as well, which confuses those who are trying to follow the story...
