No. If both parents are Japanese the parents have up to 3 months after the birth to declare or register the child's birth in Japan. The child is a Japanese citizen. Up until the child is 20 years of age they can have dual citizenship (if desired and if the country they were born in accepts dual citizenship). After the age of 20 they have to decide what country's citizenship they want. At least that is my understanding of the law. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You're correct. By place of birth, the child would also be an American citizen, but as niko pointed out to me, the child would choose at 18.

s. korea is having the same problem as well. nowadays a lot of women there tend to marry later. and also add to the fact that some women may choose a career over having a family as well.

right or wrong, having kids are a LOT of work, some may say it's the hardest occupation there is. being that there are too much life to live out there and not enough immediate incentives to having kids, couple with the fact that 'women power'is a LOT more potent then in the edo period of japan, may factor into one of the lowest birth rates in the world.

Just found out that if a woman gives birth in Japan, the Japanese government gives $3,000.00USD per baby.
Since the wife and I are having two, we were wondering if we should go to Japan to have her give birth, since she's a Japanese citizen and all.....
If so, I just have to follow up on any possible complications that we may encounter.

Perhaps, however money is a limited resource. Imagine if 1,000 people had a baby and the government paid $6,000.00USD per baby. That's a lot of money.
Receiving $3,000.00USD per child is a lot. A "Bonus" for having a baby, if you may.

Be advised that people WILL have sex regardless if money is an incentive or not.
Making a baby however, is not something that many people are willing to do out of spite. With or without a monetary incentive.
