i have had a backpiece done. it is a scene from a play called 'momijigari' and is from a book by horiyoshi the 3rd who is a well known tattooist in japan.
my friend who has his own studio did the tattoo and he's probably the only guy i'd trust to do it apart from horiyoshi himself.

i've been wanting my back done for a while, probably since i was 16. Never could get the design right, so about 2 years ago, i asked my artist/designer friend to help. We're still not done finalizing it.
Now that im hearing about the onsen stuff, im not so much in a hurry.
after that, ill have a tribal done on my calf in Samoa, the old school way.

No tattoos on me. I recently started watching a TV show called "Miami Ink" on the TLC channel. Has anybody here seen it yet? It is about 4 men who are friends, and one apprentice, who opened up a tattoo parlor in Miami. It is an interesting show because not only does it show the application of various tattoos on a wide assortment of people, but it also gives their reasons for getting their particular tattoos and the meanings or symbolism associated with them. Many of the tattoos are done in memory of people who have died. This show has helped me get a better understanding of the significance of tattoos.
Since I am still learning about tattoos..I have a few questions.
A few of you have mentioned tribal tattoos. By tribal do you mean like the Samoan (sp?) tribal tattoo that The Rock got on his chest and arm to respect his ancestry? If you are not Samoan or from a specific tribe or culture, do these tattoos have a special meaning? Or do you mean tribal like the tattoo bands that go around your arms?
About how much does an average tattoo cost?
How long does it take the skin to heal?
How do you keep the skin from getting infected after getting your tattoo? (Yes I know the needles are brand new and sterilized. But the skin must be raw.)
OK I think those are enough questions for now from curious little ole me....Enna!

i got the tattoo that i have because, being half japanese, i wanted something relating to the culture. i chose the 'momijigari' scene as it had a samurai drawing his sword against a demon, which stood out at me when looking through horiyoshi's book.
my friend who did it has his own studio and he charges 60 gbp(approx $90) an hour.
i had seven sessions altogether having one session each fortnight to allow the skin to heal before starting again. applying cream to the tattoo kept the skin moist and prevented infection while it was healing.

When I watched the TV show "Miami Ink" they never mentioned the costs of the tattoos. Of course that makes sense to charge by the hour.
Because your tattoo was large and on your back, no wonder you needed so many sessions to complete it. Wow seven sessions, that is a lot! How many hours was each session. After all those sessions you can probably tolerate any pain now ! I am sure that certain parts of the body are more painful to tattoo than others.
The only part I don't quite get while watching that TV show and trying to keep an open mind about the reasons for tattoos. Why do some people get religious tattoos, when they do not belong to that particular religion? I sometimes get the feeling that they are trying to get a spiritual feeling or meaning from the outside in, instead of from their inner beings out.

I've designed tattoos for a few people, but had none yet myself. I designed one well over a year ago now that im still determined to get done, just a simple barcode that says something in binary, on my wrist maybe. I want to be super super sure I want it, and that i fully trust the person doing it before i go through with it
Got 3 piercings so far, lip, ear and unmentionable Was pondering on going and getting my eyebrow and another one on my ear today...

Growing up around a Grandfather who was mortified by the tattoo on his forearm made me step back and reconsider when getting tattooed became a fad rather than a cultural thing in Europe and America in the 90's.
And I'm pretty glad I did now, because a couple of the guys, and one of the girls I work with are now going through the pain and expense of having theirs removed.
I know there are people who can wax on about the cultural significance, and artistic beauty of tattoos in Asia, or among the Pacific Islanders.
But right now, in the west, they are fashion. They are a fad.
And the fashions and fads you buy into completely as a kid always come back to haunt you when your older. _________________

the first two sessions were 1 1/2 hours. after that i went on to hourly sessions. the first 40 minutes or so you can tolerate the pain but after that your will power fades!
it took me over 10 years to find this image that i'd be happy with. i don't do fashion tattoos! these are the ones that people get just to be trendy then regret it later.

I saw a Nazi tattoo on one person's arm in my life and I can not even imagine the horrific memories that tattoos must have brought up for those who had no choice or no say in their bodies' desecration.
