Actually, I did something similar, except I tried to visualize the people wearing historical clothing. Certain people looked "right" to me in Japanese clothing, Chinese clothing, or Korean clothing, so that's how I picked 'em. So it's a clothes thing.
BTW, BMWRacer, did Ryoko darken her hair or something? She looks different in that lower icon?

This quiz, in my opinion, is sort of meant to prove that it's ALRIGHT to mistake people in your mind or to show that there's nothing intrinsically wrong with thinking people look similar--but that doesn't give leeway to assuming things about people when you open your mouth.
My Korean friend (as in, she's an exchange student from Korea right now in Japan) took it and got a 4.
Most people born in Korea are surrounded by more ethnic Koreans than you'd think. People don't look highly upon "mixed" Koreans as the Japanese have tended look upon European-blooded mixed Japanese. So the fact of not seeing anyone who looks different in any way can make a mistake. She marked a lot of people down as, obviously, Korean--hahaha. Exchange studenting in Japan gave her a bigger concept of what Japanese were like, I think, so she marked some Chinese as Japanese.
Everyone is quite worked up about these three Asian groups--perhaps because they're considered to have done the least intermarriaging? (Though the Chinese have so many ethnicities--many with a clear facial distinction in some ways--that it's difficult to say all Chinese "look Chinese" or not because the Chinese empire was built from conquering smaller nations in what we consider modern day China). That'd be a myth of non-intermarriaging of course.
Someone ought to make a quiz to tell the different East Africans apart. No one has ever thought of Africans as, number one, even HAVING different languages, let alone different ethnicities...hahaha...
Being in Japan, I realized how closed people were to the outside world besides China, Korea and the Philippines (maybe). Many college student girls have no idea what language they speak in Mexico. Or any Latin American nation actually. I can say it's similar to many Western high school children who have no idea what language they speak in Korea (besides the country name giving it away?!)--but most people tend to learn these things by college! And no matter where I go, a lot of people think there's "Afurika-go" (African language)...it doesn't exist. O_o; It's like, "She speaks Asian."
So in short, most people aren't hip to anyone outside their social realm, and it's not that big of a deal if you can't tell a Korean from a Chinese from a Japanese. It's just the assuming about people that's ridiculous.
Whew, rant.

I know some of the basic differences....skin color. Some chinese and japanese aren't that tanned, kinda white actually...same goes for vietnamese people
I believe most koreans are more tanned than chinese and japanese....but den again...my score said 8...maybe i haven't run across enough chinese, japanese, and koreans yet. _________________

Just because you're Asian doesn't mean you can discern between the various groups...
I guess we all look alike... Even to each other...

Hey, I saw on the news he got busted for speeding in Georgia, going something like 120mph in his Bentley... He told the cops he was "late for church"...

Don't worry, Eve.
Next time you're out in SF, I'll take ya by Chinatown, Japantown, and for some good Korean BBQ.
