Chinese yearn to marry foreigners: survey

Yahoo News 4-1-2005

BEIJING (AFP) - Nearly 63 percent of Chinese citizens would like to marry a foreigner, according to a survey of contemporary Chinese attitudes towards international marriage. The survey by Chinese web portal sina.com showed 62.7 percent of the 10,381 people questioned favoured marrying someone other than a fellow citizen. It did not set out the reasons why, although 12.78 percent of respondants said they felt Chinese "worshipped" foreigners and their lifestyle. About 75 percent said that cultural differences would be their biggest concern when considering such a marriage.

"Every international marriage is challenged by cultural and language differences," Chen Guangyao, an official with the Ministry of Civil Affairs, was cited as saying by the Beijing Morning Post.

"Whether it succeeds or not depends to what extent the bride and groom are ready to handle these differences." International marriages in China have experienced two distinct periods. In the 1980s and 1990s some Chinese people married primarily for convenience, either to get visas for overseas studies or to be able to move to a foreign country. But since the turn of the century, such marriages were more likely to be based on love, said Chen.

Marrying a foreigner is no guarantee of long-lasting happiness, said the paper, citing a separate survey showing that international marriages tend to have high divorce rates.

The survey by the Shanghai municipal government showed 60 percent of marriages between Chinese and Canadians failed.

========================================

I wonder if this factors in the fact that in china there is a the hi rate of Male to female ratio due to the 1 child law there.

I agree. Though, some people get married because they are in love. However, I'm married to my husband yet I could be "in love" with someone else. nyah

I guess it just depends on your reasons and of course everyone has their own set of why they would or wouldn't (marry). Deal!

Though I could take this conversation to other places - I'll leave it there for the moment (@ least until the moment arrives when I can take this further). Victory! Peace!

I'm not sure how that works out outside of America, though??

Everyone knows tax time can be better if you're married [and claiming dependents, heh]...but is that only America? Crazy

I remember this Dan Fielding joke from the TV series Night Court, when he was trying to dissuade judge Harry Stone from proposing, he said something like:

"Harry! Don't do it!

Marriage... you're tied down to the same woman... Chained to her...

Wait! I'm making this sound exciting." Doh! Naughty

Order in the court! hehe

Yup, you're right. Our income tax structure in the U.S. is a mess.

And that's being kind.

There are some benefits to being married and having kids tax-wise, but you can't itemize with just that... Mortgage interest, property tax, etc. helps a whole lot...

I know. I just finished my taxes a couple of days ago... *passes out*

I know, I know. I've been doing them on the computer before. I don't know why I am procrastinating. It'll get done...it has to. I've got no choice.

A simple wedding? You won't find that in Japan dude! Bleah
The simplest wedding would be to go to Las Vegas in one of those wedding chapels, my friend! hehe hehe hehe

Even cheaper, a court wedding done by a judge. Nut

ideal age to marry is 30.
wedding ceremony will be simple, just family and friends.
honeymoon would be in Japan and Hawaii.

no offense to anyone... most likely i won't be marrying a Chinese even though i am Chinese. i've met so many Chinese guys and they all say the only thing they don't like about me is that i was born here in US. but people tell me is that the guys i am meeting are jealous because i have a degree. huh? some of them have a degree. don't get it. their parents like me, it's just i think the guys are too picky. some of them want me to earn $100,000 a year, i think these guys' standard is too high. these guys don't even make near that much.

also these guys say they want to have enough money and have a house before they seriously date and get married. well at the rate they are going, they are going to do that at the age of 50 and 60.
