hi! help me translate a few phrases please?

There's a phrase (or a word?) I keep noticing in dialogue that I can't quite get a handle on. It's:

Tonikaku? (Tony ka ku.)

Because I've noticed it, I hear it almost constantly... but I can't get a solid definition on it by reading the subtitles. Apparently it can mean a lot of different thngs depending on the way it's used.

Can anyone help me out with a translation?

Ooo, hey! That sort of fits with the general impression I'd gotten of it.

I was thinking it meant either "anyway" or "as I said, or was saying".

And my Japanese language skills creep forward!

I have played FF XI for well, not too long. I have the European version of FF XI, and neither the European version or the American version supports the japanese IME.

Unless you have the japanese version of FF XI you won't be able to type in anything but romaji.

I have heard about people who "altered" their FF XI installation, to support japanese IME, but it is not "legal" and they do not approve of such.

Regarding the interaction with japanese players, well alot of them are quite friendly, but the main problem is that not too many japanese people read japanese in romaji, and they often don't understand it.

I have met a few who understands it (romaji) well and I have been able to "chat" with a few japanese players despite my japanese being well, very very bad, but that fact doesn't seem to bother those i've spoken with, and they give it their all with both romaji and the ingame translation, to make sure their message is understood.

The japanese players I have encounter are most of the time very polite, and I haven't heard anything about them not wanting to play with foreigners.

I play on Cerberus.

Hello,

Can anybody familiar with Japanese confirm that the Romaji phrase in my signature is correct? I'm especially curious as to whether or not the word "yumei" (as in "dream") is spelt correctly. A couple of people have told me it should be "yume" but I've seen it on online phrasebases with the added "i". The whole phrase in my sig should translate to: "that's my dream".

Sorry if this is an inappropriate post in this forum - thought I'd give it a try.

well I'm still new to the Japanese language, but I will help you with what I can:

3. gomenasai, Nihongo wakata nai, Atashi(female) or Boku (male) wa nihongo sagokunai.

5. you can just say "gambarro!" which means good luck.

My Japanese skill is not at native fluency, but I'm not terrible at it. Let me give this a shot.

1. Your website is very nice.

Anata no homupeji ga totemo suteki desu.

Of course, if you know the person's name you should use it in place of "anata" since that can be considered rude or too familiar. For example, Yoshimura-san no homupeji ga totemo suteki desu.

2. I like your dramas very much!

Is this for an actor/actress? Or for someone who is involved in production? It makes a difference. For an actor/actress I might say something like:

(person's name)-san ga arawareta dorama ga daisuki desu.

(���ꂻ��)���񂪌��ꂽ�h���}����D���ł��B

(literally, 'I love the drama in which you appeared')

3. I'm sorry, but I don't really know Japanese and my japanese is not good. ^^;

Gomen nasai, nihongo ga sukoshi shika dekimasen. Soshite, amari jouzu de wa arimasen.

This might be too much though. It's one thing to be self-deprecating, but you don't want to overdo it. I would probably just stick with the first part and leave off the "not good" part.

I would probably combine these last two by saying something like

Korekara mo gambatte kudasai.

lit. 'Please continue to do your best', it's an expression of support and good wishes.

I realize I'm using a very polite style. I think if you're writing to someone you don't know then it's best to err on the side of formality. You don't want to come off as rude.
