The technology hinges on a new kind of organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) based on a new semiconducting material that has eight times the current modulation rate of existing OTFTs. This makes the display powerful, but there's at least one more clever trick--instead of relying on driving electronics based on conventional solid chips in their familiar little black plastic packages, Sony's built all the display driver tech out of OTFTs themselves, and integrated them into the actual panel the display itself is made on. This is crafted from a super-thin (20 micron-thick) substrate, making it flexible enough to be repeatedly rolled around a tube of diameter of just 4mm, as well as being stretched.

Very cool. Let's start seeing some of this tech in consumer devices soon. We need to stop talking about the Jetsons and start living it.

Initially, it'll be quite pricey, I'll bet... Especially if it's from Sony.
No doubt you're right. If Sony's 11" inch OLED monitor price is any indication...seems like Sony is still in search for another hit...its market share seems to have waned considerably with the emergence of Korean electronics makers, LG and Samsung, who picked up the slack.

Absolutely.
Korean consumer electronics have really made a great leap forward in quality and reliability... And the same goes for their cars as well.

Finally joined the LCD tv bandwagon the other day... we picked up a 46 inch Samsung LCD TV in the post-Christmas sales. 3D ready The picture is awesome, love it. Best part is, they have a special promotion going: You register and pay postage, and you get 4 x 3D glasses, 4 x Bluray movies and another 22" LCD TV for free I didn't even know about the promotion when we bought the thing!

Congratulations. That's a great deal! I actually have a Samsung 55" LED which I bought this year. I agree, the picture is great. Enjoy your new telly.
Thanks man. We held off for long enough We could have bought a plasma or a cheaper brand LCD for a fair bit less, but the picture on the Samsung was much better. Plus the 3D is a bonus.

Very cool. My set isn't a 3D model but I agree the picture on the Samsung is much better than many other competing models. I have a slightly older Sony LCD in another room, and I can say with confidence that the Samsung LED-LCD has a superior picture.
A friend of mine has a Samsung 3D set...in fact I went with him when he purchased the set. We saw a demo model in the store displaying some World Cup soccer matches in 3D. It was crazy cool.
I'm sure you'll family will get much enjoyment from it.

Enjoy your new TV, A-Dad... And good hearing from you!
Only in Japan: Toshiba's Regza DBR-M190 serves 5TB of home media
Sometimes gigabytes aren't enough. You have to start talking terabytes. That's the case with Toshiba's new Regza Server, more numerically known as the DBR-M190. The just-announced home media server boasts 5TB of storage, enough for 15 days of MPEG4AVC-compressed digital TV -- from six different channels. Of course, that "server" in the name means you'll be able to stream captured content as well. The sad news? "You" means only Japanese consumers. But if you're one of the chosen many, this media-slinging behemoth will cost you 200,000 yen, or around $2,600.
