And I think that I was absolutely spoiled by Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam! It was such a wonderful film and I wonder if anything else can compare to it! I thought Sam was so dashing at first and felt that the scenes between and Nandini were so sensual and you could tell that they had a lot of chemistry (I read that they were a couple irl too). But later on as Nandini matured, I felt that Vanraj was a perfect match for her and found myself falling for him more because of his kindness. Ah, such romantic stuff.
I'm Netflixing a few other Bollywood films like Chori Chori, Main Hoon Na, Jab We Met, Omkara, and Asoka. Does anyone have other suggestions? |
Chori Chori was okay, but I got really annoyed at some parts. Main Hoon Na is DELIGHTFUL! Very quite movie. Asoka is a historical based film and one of my FAVOURITES!
I would also recommend Veer-Zaara. It's a very endearing love story based on a true story... I believe. Here's a promo, and I've translated what the lady says so you can understand.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjNYtMGT9P0
First scene with girl:
"My name is Somiya. I'm a Pakistani lawyer, and the individual I'm fighting for is a Hindustani (Indian). His name is Veer Pratab Singh."
scene cuts to dude walking in uniform.
Second scene with girl:
"Veer's love, Veer's life, is a Pakistani girl named Zaara Khan."
Third scene with girl:
"God has written their fate in such a way that Veer's and Zaara's name can never come together."
Fourth scene wtih girl:
"But I'm here to change their fate. I'm here to forever join their names." _________________

And Veer-Zaara, eh? I'm going to add that to my Netflix list too. Thanks for the translation. I'll be sure to post my reviews in this thread now that I know that it exists. I hope you post your thoughts on the movies that you got for your bday, Wyn.
I also have to ask--are all Bollywood films 2-3+ hours long? |
Most Bollywood films are 3-4 hours. It's rare for them to be shorter than 2.5. A lot of the newer ones are really modern (i.e. Westernized) and are therefore losing their charms.
Chori Chori is still a good movie! It was fun watching it the first time around. I just get tired of it. Ajay is married to famous female actress, Kajol. She had some awesome movies that you would love. I'll wait until you've seen the ones on your list before recommending more.
Bollywood is from my culture, so you'll get to learn about it and that's exciting! I've been watching Bollywood films since birth, though I've steered away from them lately. I much prefer the old stuff. _________________

Wow! Nice to see a Bollywood thread here at JDorama!
Though from India, I am not a fan of Bollywood movies. Tired of the old and repetitive stories.
I'd differ a bit from you on the statement that most movies are of 3-4 hrs duration. Well, most of them (as I know) are of 2.5-3 hrs instead.
Agree with you that the older movies were much better!

I have no idea how I can sit down for 3-4 hours. I guess I'll have to split the movie in half. I think that the first movie I saw already did that, so that's a good thing.
Regarding the length, why do they make it so long? Is it because there are many song and dance numbers? And are there any Bollywood films that don't have songs and dances?

I finally saw Chori Chori this weekend. I thought it was ok, but it bothered me at first since it seemed like a ripoff of the American movie Housesitter. I realized later that it was meant to be a remake, but it still didn't impress me. But I still liked Ajay's brooding character even though he was a bit boring.

I always wanted to know your ethnicity! I wanted to PM you about it, but never got around to it because I thought it would've been rude.
After I get to watching the other Bollywood films on my queue, I'll ask you guys for suggestions on what to watch next. _________________

i loved dhoom 2, kuch kuch hota hai, devdas, and many others |
I think Aish is completely over-rated, but Rani and Kajol definitely ROCK!
And of course, Kuch Kuch is one of the best films!

It's not really my ethnicity, because I'm not Indian. And Indian culture is heavy on religion, and I'm a Christian.
But most of the culture is the same, so it's all good. And i speak the language.
most of hte movies have song and dance, which is why they're so long. Ash_ton mentioned that the movies are more like 2.5-3 hours long, which might be more accurate, I dunno. Still pretty long, though.
And about Chori Chori... a lot of the newer films are rip-offs, although this one isn't a new movie. What did you think of the female actress in Chori Chori? _________________

I think to newbies to Bollywood films think that she's great because she's in a lot of popular movies and is gorgeous as hell.

Oh, you're not? The mystery continues...

I see. I guess that I'll get used to all the song and dance stuff as I watch more then.

That's too bad about the rip-offs. I don't mind it for the most part, but I'd rather know it beforehand because with this one, I was like, "hey! I saw this somewhere else!!" And the coincidences were just too obvious that I had to ease my mind by finding out if this was a remake or not. That was the main reason why I was disappointed by this film.
And the female actress was ok, I guess. I think I was just distracted by the recycled plot to notice. _________________

i'm not a newbie to bollywood movies, but i still think aish is great.
there are times when she doesn't act well, but overall, i think she's a good actress and dancer
i've seen so many movies with her and other popular actors, like her father-in-law, amitabh.
i forgot what the title of the movie was called but it had amitabh, shah rukh, and hrithik in it, and it was soooo good!!!
i must say that aish's husband is sooooo overrated.
the only reason why he's an actor is because he has famous parents.
there was another one with shah rukh, rani, abhishek (sp?), and preity that was really good also.
geez, i keep on forgetting the movie titles _________________

ugh! salman khan gets on my nerves.
especially because he's sooo freakin cocky
he thinks he's the sexiest guy on the planet or something
i think aish has really bad taste in guys.
first, she dates salman, then abhishek??? wtf??? _________________

LOL! Fa real! I think Katrina is really overrated, too. Her and Salmon are perfect for each other. I don't dislike her, but I don't get what all the hype is about.
The new actresses have nothing on the oldies, like Shridevi (sp?), Juhi, Madhuri, etc.
I only liked Salmon in ONE movie, and it was one of his first, before he became all gross: Mana Pyar Kiya (I think that's what it was called). I own it. One of my favs. _________________

Aish is probably more hype than substance as is Salman.
Agree with you that there is only one decent movie of his afaik which is 'mein ne pyar kiya'.
My fav Bollywood actor if any would be Aamir Khan.

Not sure abt the cute part, but Aamir is a good actor
Yup, his nephew Imran Khan is also into acting. Two movies of him so far - 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na' and 'Kidnap'. The first movie was a hit but the second one flopped.

I haven't seen any of his nephew's stuff, but he has the same look to him as his uncle. _________________
