Ahh, I love Long Love Letter. It's really got to be one of my favorites, mostly because of the great cast...*cough* Kubozuka *cough*
The ending was probably a little hard to understand. I think that it's kinda left up to the viewer to decide the ending truly, but this is my take on it. I think that because the class sent the letters back into time, and Asami happened to catch the falling scraps, just bits and pieces left over. For some reason the copy that I was watching was really blurry, so I couldn't manage to read what was in his hand, but I'll assume that it was something like "Don't wait for the future, seize the day" Anyways, because he read this messaage he became decided to call Mash immediately and meet her, therefore the incident where he loses his phone never occurs. Because this incident never occurs, the "disappearing school" incident doesn't either.
The very last scene (after the credits) probably had me the most confused (where you see a view from the entrance to the school where the desert has turned to lush green land.) I think what the director was trying to show is that IF the school had disappeared and ended up in the future, that the earth wouldn't be barren. I don't think that they're still in the future though. Mostly because if they were in the future, wouldn't they be in a more highly advanced city? It would be more urban if mankind survived, not farm land.
Anyways, this is just my opinion on the end, accept it or form your own^_^. I'm a happy end kind of person... (this is Eyrien* btw)

hi chicky :)
it was a pretty incredible film for me; i found it almost magical.
subsequent re-watches just made me like the film all the more.
though it was a pretty "commercial" film, i found it quite "arthouse" as well.
miho san was great playing the two different characters. and the music ... oh my ... but it was beautiful.
all the actors played well, were memorable in the roles they contributed to make the film
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0113703
the script was good, as was the pace, and it was filmed quite beautifully. lovely film about first loves, memory and the power of truth.
also a picturesque intro to hokkaido.
and lastly, i can't remember the figures, but it was a HUGE hit in japan.
i hope you'll watch it if you haven't already.
all the best ... ml
