Hiragana and Katakana are the two most basic forms of written Japanese language. This is a useful page for more info and descriptions.

From link:
Quote:

Hiragana is used along with kanji to write all native Japanese words (including words of Chinese origin). Hiragana is used for verb and adjective endings (okurigana), particles, words that have no kanji, words which are commonly written only in kana, words for which the writer does not know the kanji, and as furigana (hints provided by the writer to the reading of an unfamiliar kanji).
...
Katakana is used for loan words from western languages, including foreign names. It is used for emphasis similar to the way that italics are used in English. It is also used to replace the many unfamiliar kanji of things like fish or produce at a market or restaurant.

Katakana is also useful for representing sounds and onomatopeas...
One example is the snicker or light laughing.... westerners usually say "hehehehe" but japanese use "kukukuku" and its written in katakana. Sorry i can't use IME because the browser i am using is Firefox and IME is not supported by my browser

Youre from the phuil right... hehehe obvious isn it... hehehe
you could go to your friendly National Bookstore... they have books there that teach you... But one jem of a book is from Meriam Webster bookstore
the title of the book is Japanese for today but the weird thing is the Japanese sub-title of the book is "atarashii nihongo" which loosely translates to New Japanese. I think it was used as a text book during the japanese occupancy in the Phil. hehehe one more good book is one that can be bought the ORP (office of Research and Publications) at the Ateneo. Its untitled as 10 lessons in Japanese LAnguage and Culture. Its Japanese title is "nihongo" written in kanji

its easy to learn hiragana and katakana.
first choose which one you want to learn first.
right down the romaji of the basic kana like this

a, i, u ,e ,o

ka, ki, ku, ke, ko

sa, shi, su, se, so

ta, chi, tsu, te, to

na, ni, nu, ne, no

ha, hi, fu, he, ho

ma, mi, mu, me, mo

ya, yu, yo

ra, ri, ru, re, ro

wa, o/wo

n

then fill it with the kana

hiragana

katakana

do this a few times a day, everyday and you'll get it Victory! Peace!

Once you learn A, I, U, E, O, the rest is easy. The hardest part in Japanese for me are the frickin markers.
