Getting back to the original subject of this thread (dodges numerous foreign objects being thrown Beaten ) KSCI has Japan News at 6:30 a.m. At first, I couldn't figure out why they were saying "suki desu" before each news story. Then the light went on, and I realized they were saying "tsugi desu"
I promptly went outside and kicked myself in the ass for being so stupid Bang Head

come to think of it, it does sound quite similar when you pronounce it.

kind of like saying

kawaii
kowaii...
someone could get mistaken on what they hear... Beaten

I thought this thread would never get anymore replies... Alll of the sudden, reading the posts, I thought I was in a blackhole in a convo of public bathing gossips O_o

Yeah, I never understood about that bit... cute=Kawaii - scary=kowaii

I end up thinking that scary was spelt as kawai... but I wasn't to sure.

Right now, I'm listening to Pimsleur's audio ones and watching Jdoramas without subs. But I think that I lack in vocabs...

My problem too. Pimsleur was fine at the beginning, but there are some weird things in it.

Not that it's wrong, but if I use it, I'm pretty sure I'll sound weird. Like saying onegaishimasu all the time or instead of saying shitsure shimasu, they have this long sentense something like: shitsure denakereba narai desu (?) I don't remember exactly what it was. I stopped a while ago. Beaten

That's true... I was listening to the Japanese 1 lesson 4 (yes, I haven't got far) and it was on about "You speak Japanese well, don't you."

I was listening to the "speak" which was hanasemasu but then it changed to hanashimasu... I think I'm wrong but I'm not sure. But, I thought that it examples the formal but changes to informal terms.

God, I'm stuck Bang Head

i think the pimsluer course is good though, but quite difficult at times.

I remember the shitsu rei nakaraba naranein desu, wow that was quite difficult remembering it the first time. I think it means please excuse me otherwise it wont do' literally but commonly i hear many who just say shitsu rei.

This story has to do with listening so I'll put it here:

A woman said that she attended a wedding which was done at a Christian church.
They called a foreign priest at that wedding and he spoke in Japanese with his English accent.
Btw the word god in Japanese is kami. That foreign priest pronounced the word kami "kame".
He said "kami no onmaeni"( before God ), but to Japanese his words sounded "kame no onnmaeni" ( before a turtle ).
She said that they had to refrain from laughing until the wedding ended.

Hahaha.
That must have been really funny.

When I started studying japanese it was very difficult for me to understand anime or dorama. Now I get most of what they are saying but tv programmes like hey hey hey are so difficult to understand. They speak very fast.

Hey guys, just to contribute to an old thread. Maybe someone can still benefit from my method. Smile
1. I listen to audiobooks in Japanese. The only one I listen to is Harry Potter since I am a big fan of it. The narrator speaks very fast though. But I just keep on listening to it, because I am still able to pick up words and phrases that I use contextually to understand whole sentences or paragraphs.

2. Yep, Jdorama. I usually just load them to my iPhone and listen to them while at work. Just for a bit of background noise and passive listening. Smile

Those manzai guys are difficult. Plus, the Japanese are so big on puns. 90% of which go right over my head. ashamed
