Earlier in the thread someone said (sorry i dont know how to use the quoting feature) that it's nice to have a study partner. It sure is. I am fortunate that in my college there is a minor offered for the japanese language but it only teaches you japanese language level proficiency up to a sixth grader in japan even if you finished it all... Furthurmore, the formal way of speaking is taught. That is not quite helpful in watching drama's and reading manga. Anyway, if you are in a university try to find maybe a korean/japanese exchange student who is wanting to learn/practice english. You tutor him english and he would teach you japanese. I said korean because I had a korean friend who taught me nihongo. He said that he knows japanese because it is compolsury for them to learn it in highschool. I am not sure if it applies but practicing with someone who knows the language really helps in pronounciation.

penpals are nice, but you only communicate via emails and not by conversing. unless, of course, you get to that level where you can call each other up. nevertheless I think its a lot better to make friends (in person) with someone who knows the language.

Hi everyone

I learn japanese on my own in a different way. Instead of reading books that teaches you japanese, i watch animes and drama. I've been doing this for the last 2-3 years and already i know some japanese words and sentence. If you keep doing this you will learn a few things. Thats how i learn japanese.

I dont know about you guys but everyone learn japanese differently. Some may learn better in class, on their own or from books.

No, I don't work for them, but I went through all three levels of Pimsleur and find myself learning more, faster from jpod101.

Pimsleur.... a friend of mine got me all three volumes a few months ago, but I only got through halfway of the first one Sweat Not that it's hard, but it just takes a lot of discipline to do the lessons consecutively. I've also bought Japanese for Busy People to drill my kana knowledge, but only got through lesson 5. Summer has really taken a toll on me. The only things that have kept me going till now are watching j-dramas and reading, or at least trying to, j-magazines Nut

Do you use romaji then? I try to avoid that as much as I could, but sometimes you can't help but fall back into them Sweat

she understands romanji, and my very limited nihongo....
with the use of a japanese-english dictionary, and a few japanese language learning books.
i am able to have short limited conversations mostly in Japanese, but it is still a struggle for me, as some of the words in Nihongo are not in the dictionary and i cannot translate it, only guess on some of them.

i'm was doing pimsleur for a little while...almost done with the 90 lessons...i'm a relatively new japanese learner...just started 1-2 months ago actually...currently my only japanese learning has come from pimsleur...attempting to learn the kanji and kana but of course that might take awhile to get down but i'm trying...of course i'm planning on taking a japanese class or something because i think i'd learn alot more efficiently like that...i'd like to say that because of pimsleur i at least know a little bit but of course i know i'm far from fluency...of course i shall try my hardest as will everyone else here i assume ^____^

learning on your own is tough, and it takes commitment, off and on i have been learning Hiragana, and from various books for about 1 year now...but i just restarted and it is tough to learn, when you have limited time, due to the work schedule. But i hope to get at a level where i can read/write/ and speak on a basic level, but that is going to be awhile and lots of learning.

I have a Taiwanese friend who just breezes through kanji (of course since kanji is related to Chinese characters), but is having a hard time on learning hiragana and maybe katakana as well. I'm having problems on kanji myself, and in my perspective I just wonder how he is able to tackle kanji but unable to handle a measly thing such as kana. But in the end it all goes down to pure jealousy of him Grumble

your friend does have an advantage in knowing the basics in Kanji, since the Japanese use it too...
i'd say the Kanji is the most difficult, and i will probably learn it last, in character writing....i am starting with Hiragana then Katakana.

The books that I used which were very effective were Let's Learn Hiragana and Let's Learn Katakana by Yasuko Kosaka Mitamura. Maybe it'll be helpful to you as well. Afterwards you can move on to Japanese for Busy People to reinforce your kana skills. But seriously, I should be telling myself this... I've slacked off way too much already.
