No, I don't work for them, but I went through all three levels of Pimsleur and find myself learning more, faster from jpod101. |
Pimsleur.... a friend of mine got me all three volumes a few months ago, but I only got through halfway of the first one Not that it's hard, but it just takes a lot of discipline to do the lessons consecutively. I've also bought Japanese for Busy People to drill my kana knowledge, but only got through lesson 5. Summer has really taken a toll on me. The only things that have kept me going till now are watching j-dramas and reading, or at least trying to, j-magazines

chatting w/j-pen pals on Instant messaging might help too....but it's a challenge, esp if they don't speak much english.

Do you use romaji then? I try to avoid that as much as I could, but sometimes you can't help but fall back into them

she understands romanji, and my very limited nihongo....
with the use of a japanese-english dictionary, and a few japanese language learning books.
i am able to have short limited conversations mostly in Japanese, but it is still a struggle for me, as some of the words in Nihongo are not in the dictionary and i cannot translate it, only guess on some of them.

learning on your own is tough, and it takes commitment, off and on i have been learning Hiragana, and from various books for about 1 year now...but i just restarted and it is tough to learn, when you have limited time, due to the work schedule. But i hope to get at a level where i can read/write/ and speak on a basic level, but that is going to be awhile and lots of learning.

I have a Taiwanese friend who just breezes through kanji (of course since kanji is related to Chinese characters), but is having a hard time on learning hiragana and maybe katakana as well. I'm having problems on kanji myself, and in my perspective I just wonder how he is able to tackle kanji but unable to handle a measly thing such as kana. But in the end it all goes down to pure jealousy of him

your friend does have an advantage in knowing the basics in Kanji, since the Japanese use it too...
i'd say the Kanji is the most difficult, and i will probably learn it last, in character writing....i am starting with Hiragana then Katakana.
