Erika Sawajiri to appear in special drama
Actress Sawajiri Erika will be appearing in a drama again after one and a half years. She is playing the starring role in the upcoming TBS special drama 'Tokeiya no Musume', which tells the story of a cheerful and kind woman who wants her mother's memento to get repaired at a watchmaker.
Sponichi was invited to the filming and interviewed the actress. About her role, she immediately expressed with a smile, "It's not too bad for me to play a good person after a long time, is it?" With dark hair and natural makeup, Sawajiri sports a neat and clean image in the drama. "She is a cheerful and kind woman who always thinks about other people's feelings," she explained.
Sawajiri's last film project was 'Helter Skelter', which was released in July last year. Two months later, she already finished filming for her last drama project 'Akujo ni Tsuite' (TBS) that aired in April of the same year. Her portrayal of a shining star completely created by plastic surgery and her immediate destruction in 'Helter Skelter' earned her a Japanese Academy Award for Best Actress. The special drama about the life of a wealthy and wicked woman also did very well and achieved a decent rating of 14.7%, which allowed her to improve her reputation again.
The last time the actress appeared at a public event was the movie premiere of 'Helter Skelter' in South Korea in May this year. When asked about the time since then, she replied, "I enjoyed my summer vacation. My friends and I went camping, had barbecues, and went swimming."
This time, the story is about the emotional and spiritual exchange between an elderly watchmaker (Kunimura Jun) and a young woman who lost her mother in the tsunami of the Great Tohoku Earthquake. The woman asks the watchmaker to repair a wristwatch, which is a precious memento left her by late mother.
'Tokeiya no Musume' is produced by hitmaker Yagi Yasuo, who stated, "Sawajiri can play every role from a poor to a gorgeous woman. I definitely wanted her to try another role that seems to be completely different from her own image." This lead to an original story that was tailor-made for the actress during the writing process. Sawajiri commented, "When I read the script, I intuitively thought it's a beautiful piece of work. It has been a while, and I really wanted to star in a drama about human kindness again."
'Tokeiya no Musume' is scheduled to air at 7:00 pm on November 22. It's also one of the entries for the 'National Arts Festival'.

I guess it's officially official now:
Sawajiri/Takashiro divorce finalized
On December 28, actress Sawajiri Erika (27) and "hyper media creator" Takashiro Tsuyoshi (49) announced on both of their official sites that they have finalized their divorce.
Reportedly, Takashiro submitted the divorce paper on the 26th.
Sawajiri married Takashiro back in January 2009, but she announced her intention for divorce in April of 2010. However, when Takashiro revealed that it was a complete surprise for him, things seemed to get complicated.
According to a close person to the pair, one of the primary factors for this prolonged divorce was a difference of opinion between Sawajiri who wanted to split up, and Takashiro who didn't want that to happen.
Both of them continued repeated negotiation with each other's lawyer, and their divorce has finally been set after about 3 years and 8 months since Sawajiri first revealed her intention to divorce.
On the afternoon of the 28th, Sawajiri made her appearance in front of the press, and began her words with, "As you already know, my divorce has been finalized. Until now, I have worried and caused trouble to many people. Starting next year I will get a fresh start to apply myself to work, so please support me."
When asked her current mental state, she answered, "I'm just full of gratitude toward my fans and people worried about me." She also talked about her married life that everything was an ordeal for her.

Erika Sawajiri to star in 2-part "Ooku" drama special in January
Sawajiri Erika will be acting in her first period drama when she appears in the 2-part "Ooku" drama SPs to be shown via FujiTV on 22nd and 29 January 2016 at 9pm. The two stories will feature her as concubines of Tokugawa Ienari where one is an evil woman while the other is regarded as a saint. Sawajiri commented that she finally understood why period dramas are interesting, thanks to her work this time.
The Ooku series began in 2003 and had three drama series by 2005 about the harlem of the Tokugawa generals to which access by men were banned. The drama SPs will be the first sequel to the series in 11 years. Sawajiri will be playing two concubines of Tokugawa Ienari, the 11th general of the Edo Bakufu who had more than 10 concubines and fathered more than 50 children with them.
In the first story to be shown on 22 January titled "Saikyo no Onna" (The Strongest Woman), Sawajiri will play Omiyo who was known as the most powerful concubine in history and seduced Ienari with her looks and intelligence which allowed her to rise to the top of the Ooku. In the second story showing on 29 January titled "Higeki no Shimai" (The Tragic Sisters), Sawajiri will play the fictitious character Ume who is a favourite of Ienari and must contend with jealousy from her younger sister Uta who is also a concubine.
For the filming of the drama SPs, Sawajiri had to stay in Kyoto between October and November this year and learn about how period dramas are made. In addition, the 30 Kyoto-made costumes she wore in the drama SPs cost a whooping JPY 40m. With regard to her first attempt in a period drama and taking on two characters at the same time, she commented that she was not used to the actions and indirect speech in those days so she felt that she might not have expressed herself as well as she wanted. Nonetheless, she said that she had tried her best in managing the two characters.

Erika Sawajiri to star in NTV 2017 Spring drama
Sawajiri Erika will be starring in the upcoming NTV Spring 2017 drama "Haha ni naru" (Being a mother) which will begin its run from April in the Wednesdays 10pm timeslot.
The drama features Sawajiri as the lead character Kashiwazaki Yui whose son was kidnapped at the age of three on the way home from nursery just because she failed to pay attention for a brief moment. This led to the breakdown of her marriage and Kashiwazaki has been living on her own since then. 9 years later, she gets reunited with her son who has now turned 13 years old and needs to deal with how to interact with her son again and regain the lost years and her broken family. Co-stars include Koike Eiko who plays Kadokura Asako, the woman who had kidnapped Kashiwazaki's son and taken care of him as a mother for the last nine years and Itaya Yuka who plays Nishihara Risako, Kashiwazaki's friend who has been supporting all this time while her son was missing.
Sawajiri commented that although she finds this story refreshing and interesting, it is very difficult for her to be playing a mother since she has no experience in real life. However, the producer assured her that she will manage fine because her character Kashiwazaki has to learn how to be a mother from scratch after the reunion with her son anyway. Although being a mother is probably the biggest issue for a woman in her lifetime, Sawajiri felt that women learn how to become mothers through child-rearing and hopes to convey the warmth of family through this drama. As for working with Koike for the first time and with Itaya again, Sawajiri commented that she feels relaxed working with them and hopes to do a good job. Koike and Itaya both echoed the view that they are looking forward to working with one another through this drama.

Erika Sawajiri to star in movie "Funouhan"
Sawajiri Erika will be the heroine in the new movie "Funouhan" starring Matsuzaka Toori which will be shown in cinemas next year. This will be Sawajiri's first attempt at playing a police detective. Filming was done between 21 September 2016 and 23 October 2016.
The film which is based on the ongoing same-titled manga by Miyatsuki Arata and Kanzaki Yuuya, features Matsuzaka as Usobuki Tadashi who is a mysterious man with red eyes, wears black suits with a wine-red shirt and possesses a special power which will drive people to their death through methods such as curses and brainwashing. However, it is impossible for his crimes to be proven in court thus Usobuki cannot be taken to justice for the killings he did on behalf of his clients.
Sawajiri plays the role of Tada Tomoko who is a police detective and the only person who cannot be controlled by Usobuki. She is the number one beauty in the police station who hates lies and beating around the bush. Although she may speak harshly, she's actually very caring towards her subordinates and even the criminals. In the original manga, this character is actually a man but it was decided to change this to a female instead so as to contrast against the evil and bewitching Usobuki.
Although this is the first time that Sawajiri is taking on action scenes and fighting against men on screen, she said that she had always wanted to give such scenes a try someday. As her character is modeled after a man after all, she tried to show the masculine side of her character especially her strong sense of justice and will. With regard to acting against Matsuzaka, she praised her co-star for bearing a striking resemblance to the character in the manga, she said that she had enjoyed herself thoroughly during the filming of this movie.

Back in the news, but not the way she wanted to be.
Erika Sawajiri arrested for drug possession
Actress Erika Sawajiri was arrested Saturday on suspicion of possessing MDMA, police sources said.
She was arrested on suspicion of possessing a powdered form of the drug at her house in Tokyo’s Meguro Ward on Saturday morning. Police are investigating how she came to possess the synthetic drug.
Was over at Kinokuniya today and picked up the guide book for "Kirin ga kuru". Not surprisingly, Sawajiri nowhere to be found, but two pages of Kawaguchi. I wonder how much overtime they had to work to modify the guide book and if any with Sawajiri got out to the public. Might become collectors items.

And she ends up with a suspended sentence.
Erika Sawajiri given 18 month suspended sentence
KYODO
FEB 6, 2020
The Tokyo District Court on Thursday sentenced popular actress Erika Sawajiri to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, for possessing illegal drugs.
In handing down the ruling, the court said possession of MDMA and LSD carries great criminal responsibility.
At the same time, Judge Toshifumi Takioka said Sawajiri “pleaded guilty and showed remorse. Her doctor and older brother have also offered to support her.”
Prosecutors had sought an 18-month prison term for the 33-year-old, who was arrested in November on charges of drug possession, while her defense team asked for a suspended sentence.
In the first hearing of her trial last Friday, Sawajiri offered an apology and said she “does not plan to return to work as an actress.” *
The prosecutors argued in the trial that Sawajiri had been using illegal drugs since she was around 19 years old, and the likelihood of her committing the same crime is high.
The defense team for Sawajiri, who has appeared in a number of films, TV dramas and commercials, argued that there is no possibility of her committing similar offenses in the future as she has been receiving medical treatment since she was released on bail in December.
According to the ruling, Sawajiri was in possession of 0.19 gram of powder containing MDMA, 0.6 gram of liquid containing LSD, and a 0.08-gram piece of paper laced with LSD at her home in Tokyo on Nov. 16.
