@Beem,

Did you watch the performance? It was amazing.

@GM- Ive seen all the skating. Mao Asada in the Womens had a poor short program but her freestyle was magnificent.

@Wyn-chan- So do you all draw and quarter your hockey players if they dont bring back the Gold? Wink No pressure. Beaten

I love figure skating best during the Olympics! Such great performances. I'm not sure if I had a favourite though...

Hockey is our national sport. We're all just proud. Big Grin I'm just really proud of Canada in general. We were in the news for all the right reasons, such as the Canadian coach helping the Russian skier on trail, etc. Although the medals are great, in the end it's about loving and supporting your country.

We're not consistent with the Summer olympics. The US is amazing during both.

I'm excited about the next round being in Korea. They also exceed in the winter olympics.

My husband and I agreed the Figure Skaters are the best athletes in the Olympics. They can do anything anyone else can but almost no one can do what they do.
I love excellence from everyone. I love how the Olympics pull out so many personal bests from people.

But I still have a soft spot for America, Norway and Canada. So it was an extra fun year! Victory! Peace! Victory! Peace!

If you've got anything with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics logo on it, might want to save it, it could become a collectors item someday:http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-34115750

If someone hadn't pointed it out I wouldn't have noticed any similarities.

Maybe this should go in the basketball thread, but to me it's more about the Olympics and a reminder that there's always been politics involved (this time inside the United States) and when our guys were really amateurs, the other countries, maybe not so much: http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2015/09/1968_us_olympic_team_gets_bask.html

The most impressive single event I've seen thus far in the Rio Olympics happened last night when South African Wayde van Niekerk won the 400-meters, shattering the world record time for that race in the process. The record, set by Michael Johnson, had stood since 1999 and was considered almost untouchable by track experts. The fact that van Niekerk set it while running in lane eight--basically running blind--makes the feat even more remarkable.

Van Niekerk's backstory made the event even more special. His coach is a 74-year-old great-grandmother. His mother was a terrific sprinter who couldn't compete internationally due to South Africa's worldwide exclusion from track and field due to its apartheid policy.

Probably the most anticipated event in track and field also occurred last night, and Usain Bolt did not disappoint, winning his third consecutive Olympic 100-meter dash. His winning time wasn't all that great--blame the track officials for that because they scheduled the final just an hour after the semi-finals--but the historical accomplishment was what made that race so significant.

Random thoughts about the just-completed Rio Games:

Glad that rugby sevens was in the Olympics. Basically a fast break version of rugby. Exciting and wide open.

Usain Bolt. Triple triple X three. A perfect nine for nine in Olympic finals. Holds the world and Olympic records in all three. GOAT?

Mongolian wrestling coaches are as idiotic as Ryan Lochte.

Indoor volleyball, both men's and women's, was a terrific watch from start to finish. And I thought the people doing the announcing did the best job of any of the broadcasting teams I saw.

Wish they had more coverage of weightlifting. You know it's not a high priority for NBC when the announcers aren't even at the site but are back in the States watching a video feed.

Team handball is highly entertaining.

I wonder how it came to be that Japan is so strong in female wrestling? Speaking of which, the biggest upset I saw was when the American Helen Maroulis beat Japan's Saori Yoshida, who was trying to win her fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal. And the match wasn't close.

Second biggest upset I saw--American Matt Centrowitz winning the 1500 meters; last time an American won that event was over a 100 years ago, in 1908.

Of the many commercials constantly being repeated, I only liked one--the Nike ad featuring the 86-year-old nun who competes in triathlons. Inspiring and funny.

Okay, it's not the Olympics, it's the Paralympics, but anybody not inspired by Alex Zanardi better check their vital signs:http://www.cbc.ca/sports/paralympics/alex-zanardi-gold-paralympics-1.3762490
