Hehe! Dunno about SG's currency. A ramen bow costs under a 1000 yen which is twice the price of a soba bowl, hehe. Eating isn't that expensive in Japan, just gotta use your head and avoid the fancy restaurants. A teishoku (lunch set) under 1000 yen Bentos around 500 yen and up. A conveyor belt sushi 100-400 yen per plate.
If you into shopping, Winter and Summer are good seasons, sales seasons! HUGE sales everywhere, you even receive extra gifts for buyin specific goods
Btw there's been a similar thread earlier. I've written my Japan experience to it. Actually, the whole thread was weird and unclear, hehe.
is it? erm... that time i got to uyeno i had a big bowl of ramen for only merely 680 yen and it comes with a bowl of fried rice and its the best ramen i have tasted so far. btw those whom are interested to go tokyo, u can try going to uyeno vaid the train to get some nice and cheap food stuffs or shopping done. A gentle reminder is that its a place known for pickpockets so beware.
I hope to travel to Japan this Summer
I hope to stay there at least one year. I'm finishing the High School in a few months and I'll take a year off before starting any university stuff or sth. this like.
My main reason to stay there is that I really want to improve my Japanese skills. And of course I want to try out a lot of new stuff I have always heard about here. (Not to forget a Morning Musume life concert )
Guess I have to find a part time job over there anyway to afford a one year stay. I know it's very hard for me to find something (High School "only" and my Japanese skills are barely enough for easy everyday Japanese) However since I have good friends over there already, I have a place to stay. This is a big relieve.
and I'm prepared to be laughed at
Wow. Okay first, those crow stories are just freaky. I mean, I've always known that they can do weirdly intelligent things, but OPERATING A VENDING MACHINE? That takes the cake!
Man, some of you are staying for a month to a year? LUCKY! Though I have a Japanese friend in college who tells me things there are freakishly expensive outside of food, it's nice to know that you all are confirming that the single most NECESSARY THING (No, not the girls, though that'd probably be an easy second ) FOOD is nice and affordable!
I plan on rallying up maybe two or three of my friends (I'll be lucky to have even one lol) who have expressed interest in going to Japan to embark on the Pop Japan Tour so we can hit all the most interesting places in Japan within a week. OF COURSE.. It'd be cooler to actually make a friend and stay with them for say a month, but who am I kidding?
And and Nikos, going every year is JUST not fair...

Any of you went to Japan,
then went back home,
and now feel melancholic and miss it ?
You have any way of makin it a lil better?
Of course going back would be nice, but can't afford right now ^_^
If you have any stories, suggestion, opinions, feel free !
Hopefully you took pictures and/or have souvenirs... Being able to reminisce about the good times you had in Japan should make things easier... And give you motivation to plan your next visit...

I went to Tokyo a few times....
each time I come back home... I miss it immensely. I haven't been to Japan in 2 years... and I will be going back in May to make up for it.
Tokyo, without a doubt, made for the best vacations imaginable. There is simply TOO MUCH to do. And if you love gadgets and electronics, you'll love it even more. _________________

I studied in Japan this past summer for 3 months. I *do* miss being there and I miss my friends there. I did enjoy my time there a lot. I don't want to live there permanently or anything but I'm fine with extended stays. However by the end of the trip I was ready to come home. The people I lived around had gone home a day earlier than me and school was done, so it was a bit lonely. Tying loose ends, saying goodbyes, getting my phone canceled, packing, mailing purchases home, I just wanted to get it over with and get to that airport.
Of course, I missed my family, my mom, my dog (don't laugh...I love my dog to BITS! ), my car, and I wanted a cheesesteak so bad I could taste it. I didn't really get homesick much until the last 2 days. I feel like I got home just in time, though. Although it wasn't expected, I lost my mom a month after coming home. I can't imagine being away for such a tragedy and family emergency.
While I loved seeing Japan a lot, it was good to be home. It's been about 8 months since I came home. I miss it and I can't wait to go back and visit again....but it's gonna be really expensive. I don't plan on studying there again, working there, or anything like that. I have too much here that I'd leave behind. I do plan to visit at least several more times in my life. I never got to travel except for living in Tokyo for 3 months, so there's so much of the world I want to see

Yeah, Tokyo and Osaka are considered two of the most expensive places to live in the world... You gotta wonder how people get by living there...
Living there wasn't so bad, you learn to get thrifty especially while on a budget. Eating out is pretty cheap, but groceries and stuff....WHOOOO!! You get to find your fave stores that have the better prices. Visiting is very expensive because of the flight and hotel: plus purging your wallet from shopping! When you live there, you spend less because you aren't rushing to do everything all at once
I didn't get to visit Osaka, but I was in Kyoto for like 3-4 days. Good LAWD, the trains were more expensive, that I noticed right away. Japan in general is expensive, but moreso in the big cities.
