Japan is really great place to visit during anytime of the year. Summer tends to be hot and winter tends to get on the colder side but if you don't mind the climate than it can be a wonderful vaction anytime. If you like city life than Osaka is definently the place to be.
Oh man, I'd love to get out there one of these days... My cousin spent a number of years in Japan teaching kids English and living with a Japanese family... She absolutely loved it and still visits there quite often when traveling in Asia...

Based on my experience in Kobe + Osaka 4 2-3 yrs...
Japan is more good for Study & Work, but not for stay .... everythin' expensive over there ...
It's more because of cost labour very highest in the world ...
Currently for Bachelor degree some company will pay you around 250.000 JPY .... with 50.000 - 65.000 JPY for rent apartment ... and if u go to Tokyo u just added 10.000 somethin' laah
Mostly for foreigner people they will share her / his apartment with his colleague to reduce cost of rent ...

Depends on where you go, too. The temperature in JPN is comaparable to the U.S. I would compare Akita/Aomori area like New England, Tokyo would be like Boston/NYC, Kinki is comparable to DC, and Okinawa is definitely Miami-like (especially the humidity)

it was called YOUTH FOR UNDERSTANDING (but this was for high school students). for college students, there should be some local ones at your college (some let you work, some are with host families). one that i will try to participate in is the JET program, where you get paid and teach english in japan (mostly k-8th grade, i think). but you need a Bachelors degree. They let you stay there for 1-2 years. _________________

Plan to live there someday...I think I choose Otsu so peacefull and ppl are so friendly even to gaijin..Even I consider myself as City boy...That place really tempting..That's why I work my ass out so I one day can stay and live there.

me too... ii want to one day live in osaka permenantly. Japanese people are some of the nicest I have ever met and no where can beat the culture and lifestyle. Japan also has the perfect mix of great nature life in the country side and onsens and city life such as Osaka and Tokyo.

Been there twice toured hokkaido, tokyo kyoto nara and hamamatsu... small city....
well you can forget about those stylo handphones cos they are too advanced for singtel m1 or starhub....and they are all in jap anyway
didn't get to see a lot of their drama vcds.. you can try but be advised.. there is no such thing as subtitles so hmm... maybe you wanna reconsider
well only one piece of advice... get ready to burn a hole in your pocket even if you are going for budget.. a meal of sandwiches and a drink is going to cost you S$5... dinner... hmmm... you can try the supermarkets after 8pm.... they have 1/2 price for most perishables...like bentos and sushi... slightly for sumptuous dinner could cost you about $7(with the discount of course!!)
Wow ... lucky you. You got to tour Japan!!! argh. I wonder when my chance will come.
Which part of Japan was the best in your opinion? I really wanna visit TOkyo Bay, and also the Ginza district... but I'll probably not even buy any item from Ginza, because 1) they're too high tech 2)they cost a bomb.
Yea I heard 1 bowl of Ramen can cost up to 8 bucks Singapore dollars... whoo..
BTW, do you speak Japanese... if you don't, how'd you manage to 'survive' there?
My sister's friend went there once w/o knowing how to speak japanese, and as she's Buddhist, she can't eat beef, so she went in, attempted to say, NO BEEF to the waiter, gave up, and started going 'NO...' "MOOOOOO", with hands sticking out of her head for effect. The waiter understood straightaway, and my sis's friend got laughed at ... but she learnt how to say 'NO BEEF' later.

cows make a diffrent sound in japan.
yea things are expensive. the little trinkets and music there are a nice buy but you can can most things at home, where ever you live. the hyaku en store was my fave place cuz everything was 100yen. clothes too!
if you want electronics. go to akirabara in tokyo. theyve got cd, mp3 players and books(in japanese of course). or try the night life. tons of stuff selling in the streets at night in tokyo.
word of advice: try not to travel in the summer. unless youre use to humid weather, you're gonna suffer out there.
and you should learn some words like bathroom, the name of your hotel... or bring a mini dictionary, that helps a lot. otherwise, learn the language.

yah i am quite a serious learner of the language...8th year in fact in the language.. but learnt it at a very slow pace... cos i am still a student dun have the whole day to study jap only...
yes the hyakuyen shop rulz man.. bought quite a lot of stuff there... well ginza is like really high class... didn't even bother to walk into most of the shops but tokyo is really cosmopolitan.. shibuya, ikebukuro, harajuku, roppongi, just to name a few really developed areas..
well sabriel.. i live in singapore... summer all year round doesn't really matter to me when it's summer there... haz
japan isn't all about urban cities really... check out kyoto and nara for some historical look of japan.. hokkaido if you are a nature lover... the flowers in summer attract millions of tourists in the golden fortnight where the flowers bloom(lavender sunflower etc.)
every place has its specific charm

I've heard about the hyakuyen shop... that 100 yen shop right? It's drawing many tourists, according to japantoday.com.
About Japan not being all about urban cities... haha, that's what I like about it. It's a country which blends modern and traditional culture. A rarity in most countries.
Anyway, sabriel, if cows don't 'MOO' in Japan, then what sound do they make?
