Masahiro Nakai to star in FujiTV Special

SMAP's Nakai Masahiro will be starring in the new FujiTV drama SP "Shin Naniwa Kinyudo" which is the first installment in 10 years and the 7th SP in the series which started in 1996. The SP which is based on the manga by Aoki Yuji and serialised in the men's magazine "Morning", is due to be shown early next year and filming started on 12 October in Osaka.

Nakai plays the role of Haibara who works in a consumer finance company "Teigoku Kinyu" and the story depicts his interactions with the people who come to borrow money from his company. When asked about his reason for deciding to take on the offer to reprise his role, Nakai said that it was simply because he and the staff wanted to do it so it wasn't for reasons such as viewer demand.

Masahiro Nakai leaving Johnny's

Masahiro Nakai, the former leader of disbanded all-male idol group SMAP, said Friday he will leave talent agency Johnny & Associates Inc. in late March, ending a relationship that has lasted over 30 years.

The 47-year-old said at a news conference in Tokyo that he has had difficulty motivating himself to take on new challenges after SMAP broke up in 2016 and that he has established his own office to manage his work.

“I’m basically on my own,” said Nakai, who has been hosting a number of TV shows since the break-up. “I thought I needed to put myself in a new environment.”

SMAP was so popular that shortly before they disbanded in 2016, more than 370,000 people signed online petitions from Japan and abroad begging the group to reconsider.

Asked whether SMAP will get back together, Nakai said it is still a possibility.
