The two first situations are obvious. I'm actually surprised they can say the entire word because Japanese Itai is two syllables, unlike English Ouch or Spanish Ay which are one.

That totally depends on the language you use. For a japanese "itai" is actually 3 syllables (I - TA - I), if you closely observe the way you say "ouch" you could say it would actually be made up of "A - U - TSHH" but generally because of the way english language works, we see "ouch" as "OU" + "CH".
To compare the length of 2 words from different languages, you should use a system that can constantly break up the words into 'parts' in every language. As far as I know there isn't such a system, so it makes it hard to compare words. For example, in english you don't count vowels as "extra time". Like
"Strike" has only one syllable even though your mouth produces 6 different sounds in it:
S - T - R - AH - EE - K
But the word 'I' for example also has 1 syllable but is significantly 'easier' to say;
AH - EE
Ok Now i'm expecting some people to say "what the hell are you talking about, you don't say I as [Ah-EE], it is just 'I' ". But just because you write it with only 1 letter, doesn't mean you only SAY one letter (perfect example: japanese have words made up of many syllables, written in just 1 character).
So bottomline is that the english writing system wouldn't accurately represent the real "length" of a word, or it's complexicity. I also don't think "itai" takes more time to say than "ouch", but obviously "ay" would be the shortest. _________________

Deosn't anyone ever care to ask if the person in the street is ok? Weird! |
That's actually realistic. I've never seen the driver in that situation in real life get out of the car and ask, "Are you OK or just jaywalking." Usually the response is "#@$@#$#@ idiot"

D'oh!
Well, ok. I guess it's different depending on where you are. I don't think I would expect that. Maybe "Watch out!", or "Danger!" or "Be careful!".

gaijin mark wrote: | Time to revive this thread: What about the "attempted suicide" cliche? I was reminded of this while watching episode 1 of Densha Otoko where he' s standing on top of the building thinking about jumping off. Yeah right, if he jumps, we got no drama! The list of drama's where someone didn't try to kill themselves would be very short. The only 2 I can think of are Hotman and Orange Days. |
Well, Hitomi Kuroki did jump off on Ai suru tame ni Ai-saretai, (Although it was an act of desperation at being chased rather than a suicide attempt),... and we still got plenty of her.

very pretty teacher is very nice to guy student.
one day, guy student is walking/sitting around somewhere and sees very pretty teacher pass by. he tails her to a club and finds out that teacher is working as a *gasp* HOSTESS! for the money.
