I'm partial to Yoko Kanno because of Cowboy Bebop. She writes GREAT melodies that you find yourself humming along too. Being a trumpet player, I can say for sure that she writes the craziest trumpet parts I've heard from any Japanese composer. I bet her horn section all have massive chops to do the licks that she writes. hehe

I also adore the music of Uematsu Nobuo and Mitsuda Yasunari of Squaresoft (back then) fame. Chrono Trigger had the best SNES music IMO.

Haven't heard much/any of the stuff from most of those composers, but what I have heard from Hisaishi Jo is pretty awesome: his soundtracks for Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) and Majo No Takkyuubin (Kiki's Delivery Service) are outstanding. Applaud Applaud

My favorite Japanese composer is Toshifumi Hinata. Besides several classical music pieces, he's also responsible for various Japanese drama soundtracks (virtually all BGMs) including Tokyo Love Story, Imouto Yo and Hitotsu yane no shita.

Hahaha in that case go for music produced by Tetsuya Komuro (TK). The guy's like a freaking genius when it comes to music. Nearly every artist he made music for in the mid to late 90s became number 1 and he also was the one behind Ayu's songs too before she started composing her own Big Grin

Yeah, he's what made Ayu good. After Ayu started doing her own crap, it just wasn't as good.

Golden Age of Ayu = Poker Face all the way up to her last good album, Duty.

And another thing about Kanno Yoko. She picks the absolute best vocalists to sing her songs. Sakamoto Maaya's sweet voice coupled with Yoko's music is pure heaven. And Steve Conte too. Man, that guy is my hero when it comes to Western male vocalists. He's severely underrated though. Sad

I liked her music up til the "I am" album with Dearest being her last real good single but give her some credit though, her songs lately have been getting better. I guess it's also nice to try to sell songs that she actually wrote.
