Unfortunately, you're relegated to watching the video on your PC, since most (all?) standalone DVD players don't support .mkv... Sweat

Unless you have one of those media players, those all seem to support .mkv files.

I was under the impression that the benefit of .mkv over .avi was the file size. For basically the same video quality an .mkv can be a lot smaller in size than an .avi. For example, I have a .mkv movie that's 400MB and the quality (sound and video) is comparable to the .avi file I downloaded that's around 800MB.

Nope, incorrect. The video file inside a .mkv can be anything, as I pointed out above. .mkv is just a "container".

Yeah, just like avi... I guess the .mkv is a more versatile container.

You should've used the existing Conversion thread.

Downloaded Maiko Haaan!!! the other day, but I couldn't get DVD Shrink to work with it: I kept getting a "divide by zero" error during the analysis phase. Sweat

Ended using an alternate program, DVD Rebuilder, and it didn't have any problems... Odd. Head Scratch

Anyone ever try converting .mkv to .avi?

I'm converting (using avidemux) this one large file (4GB+) and the audio is out of sync with the video after conversion... Sweat

Haven't seen it happen with other .mkv files... Just this big one... Wonder if that has something to do with it. Head Scratch

.mkv is just a container. Look for mkvtoolnix, it allows you to extract the various files in the container.

I did use that to extract the file... But after the conversion, the audio sync was off. Sweat

I don't see how the file size could affect it, yet that seems to be the only apparent difference.

Weird.

I don't bother with that any more, since ConvertX to DVD handles mkv's beautifully from version 3 on Smile

Have you ever tried it with a large (4GB+) .mkv file?

So ka.

I've done the conversion from .mkv with no problems until I ran into this 4GB file... Guess I'll have to do some Googling. Sweat

Hardsubbing Nodame - Finale for Evie and I noticed that the subs are out of sync during the hardsub process... Sweat

Then I realized that the .mkv video is 23.98fps, not 29.97fps... Doh!

Ack, I bungled yesterday's avi to mpg encoding: I forgot that the video has to be 704x480, not 704x396 to be compliant with DVD-Video... Sweat

Starting all over again.

http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/i-love-free-collection-audio-and-video-converters.htm

Maybe worth trying for those looking for free video and audio converters. You don't need to go looking for password/code.
