So I was watching an old episode of Gaki no Tsukai where the batsu game was play acting as police cadets...the three participants were Endou, Yamazaki, and Hamada.
When they were handing out the equipment to the three guys, Endou and Hamada both got night sticks but they give Yamazaki a long piece of Gobo (Burdock Root) instead!

No, not at all. They are not easily found. You have to go to a shop/market that sells ethnic foods, namely from the Middle East. I only know of a couple of places personally that sell them. I'm sure if you go to a grocery store in an area with a significant Jewish population you could find them.
I know Bay Cities Italian Deli on Lincoln Blvd in Santa Monica carries them.

^ But are they crisp like the Claussen's?
ATK did a Kosher pickle taste test and their top choices were the Claussen's and Boar's Head cukes.
They don't come refrigerated but I always place the can in the fridge for it to get cold. As far as crispness, I would say they aren't quite as crisp but I find them much more flavorful.
