That's little bit hard...
I study by myself, and it's little bit hard...
But, if try it harder, then it won't be that hard, after I think about that... _________________ Is there any other else to talk about?

(I am sorry about my english, it's not my native... please, don't laugh )
everyone here says that learning a language by oneself is difficult....
it's different from the way you study at school, but it can be even more effective. it depends on motivation.
I've studied english and swedish at school because I have had to, well it's been very fun anyway...and I started german because I was interested in it.
at school you have to study even when you are tired, even when you are not interested in, with texts you maybe don't like.
now I am learning japanese on my own and it's a hobby for me: hey, no tests, no homework 8) and you can study as much as you like, as fast as you want or can. and you can choose the material: jdoramas, manga, anime, funny grammar books, texts, and so on...
I started japanese learning seriously last November and I feel that I am better at japanese than german which I have studied a year at school.
huh, this post is a bit incoherent o_o ߂B
well, about how to study japanese....at first:
1. listen to it, then you became familiar with japanese and it's pronunciation.
2. LEARN HIRAGANA AND KATANA - even if you think that they aren't useful for beginners... they are! it's good to learn them as soon as possible! and use them everytime you write japanese.
3. basic grammar is essential! particles, desu, -te, -masu, i and na-adjektives, etc etc...
4. KANJI - 2000 characters...sounds difficult. but hey, little kids in japanknow 200-300 kanjis, why not you? and it's just matter of time. you don't have to learn them all at once. and USE THEM! try to make your own sentences, write stupid ones - you'll remember the words better
6. study more grammar, study more words, watch jdoramas ;>, listen to japanese music, read japanese, try to find japanese friends... think in japanese... just try to make the language part of yourself.
huh o_o I...wrote too much ... o_o sorry o_o the topic is so inspirating.

if you have possibilty, of course! there you have a teacher that can answer your questions immediately and can explain grammar =) but for example kanjis you anyway have to study by yourself if you want to learn to read japanese and you don't want to wait decades x)

Well, if you're thinking of self-studying, the Genki books are usually the favorite of the majority. I self studied for a year, and found them amazing! You can get a textbook, workbook, and CD set. Genki is good because it focuses on reading, writing, listening, and vocab. Some people complain that it moves a little slow, but if you take into account that you are learning much more fluently.
However, if you're planning to self-study for a while, research universities/schools near you that you can test into later, and find out what textbooks they use. It will make the placement tests much better.
I only suggest self-studied for a year or so. After that, it becomes really hard to keep up with classmate's speaking skills. Speaking is the main trouble with self-studying. A good suggestion is to buy a computer mic and use Skype. However, this won't be as good as a classroom setting.
I self-studied for a year and tested into Intermediate Japanese II. So maybe that's the best place to aim? In my opinion, classroom settings are much better because it drills the information in your head much better, you can get on the spot help, you learn cultural do's and don't's at the same time, and your listing and speaking skills are much better.
I hope my [speedily typed] advice helps! _________________
