Think my husband would love that series. It was a rerun when I was a teen and I had a big crush on Robert Wagner.

Watched the two episodes that I recorded yesterday... Lots of stars in their early days: Denise Nicholas, Terri Garr, George Takei... Victory! Peace!

Never got into that show for whatever reason... Actually, I can't think of many war-related TV shows or films that I really watched with a lot of interest...

Took a break from dramas the last two weeks because I picked up the first season of Car 54, Where Are You? on DVD: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054528/

Funny stuff, great writing from the "golden age" of television. I had forgotten that Charlotte Rae ("Facts of Life") was Leo Schnauser's wife and Nipsey Russell as the dispatcher. This was 1961 before any of the civil rights stuff, he may have been the first African-American regular in a network tv series. And in addition to saying, "Oooh, Oooh" Joe E. Ross' other favorite line was, "Do you mind? DO YOU MIND??" hehe

Lordy I loved Car 54 Where Are You

Re: Nipsey Russell...

I don't know who was the first, but it wasn't Nipsey.

Alvin Childress, Spencer Williams, and Tim Moore led an all African American cast in Amos & Andy on CBS from 1951 through 1955.

I had completely forgotten about Amos 'n Andy. Although I do remember a cartoon series called "Calvin and the Colonel" which was loosely based on them.

The 'Jack Benny Show' had Rochester, but I don't remember when it started.

There was also wonderful show set in a NYC police precinct which had an Asian detective ..Jack somebody. He used to be in stage musicals. The Captain was named Barney?? always in shirtsleeves. there was an intelligent detective always reading and a dumb one and an African American young one who was always very dapper and smart. They never seemed to move out of the station setting and only had 'regulars' in the cell most of the time.
The retired captain would keep coming in because he had no family and nowhere else to go. Very boring and always tried to tell Barney what he used to do when he was solving cases.
It was a very well written show with great dialogue for the actors.

Anyone remember the title?

That was Barney Miller: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072472/

The Asian actor was a fellow named Jack Soo. His real name was Goro Suzuki, he was born and raised in Oakland. There's more info about him here: http://jacksoo.com/

Bow My thanks to gajinmark for the title. Last night my brain would not shut down and I was awake until about 2a.m with thoughts of old shows and trying to get to Barney Miller. I kept sticking on Hill Street Blues and I knew that was wrong. Howver I did remember a lot of old shows!

Anyone remember these
Jerry Lester who hosted his show 'Broadway Open House' and had statuesque girl DAGMAR as his glamorous assistant. There were others in the team and I remember the MC was Jack Lescoulie who later worked on the
Dave Garroway show in 1952. Early morning show.

At night there was Steve Allen who followed Lester. He had Louis Nye and
Don Knotts and Tom Poston and his band leader was Skitch Henderson. Steve was a brilliant wit as well as a fine musician. This was 1956

Then came Jack Paar. He had a good run but I remember once he was bleeped and joke was cut on one show and he was furious. It was so silly because the joke was mild and not at all offensive. The next night the show began and he walked on and, standing in the middle of the stage, he said his very serious piece about the idiots in the company who had the empty heads to cut out such an
innocent remark, and then said until some apologies arrive and more intelligent peole are in charge I am leaving. He then walked off the stage and he did indeed go home and everyone was stunned.
Of course they had to get him back but I don't remember how long he stayed away.

I guess those were the good old days.I remember watching Jackie Gleason but I think that was on the Dumont TV channel 5. They had boxing and wrestling I think. Gorgeous George was the famous wrestler until Antonini Rocca came from
South America with his bare feet in the ring doing his 'Scissors Kick'

I will stop.

I think they have some of the old Steve Allen stuff on YouTube.

I went to school with a girl named Dagmar. I don't think she particularly liked it. I'm guessing that TV show is where they got the name from.

Dagmar of "Broadway Open House" was amazing. (No, I don't really remember seeing the show. But I've seen pictures.)

But she wasn't the only reason the name was fairly popular.

Back in 1948 the movie, "I Remember Mama" was a major hit, and one of the daughters was named Dagmar.

Then in 1949 "Mama" became one of the first huge hits on TV. It ran from '49 through '57. And daughter Dagmar was one of the most popular characters.

The show was so popular the studio re released the movie in 1957.

There was even a Broadway musical back in the seventies.

My favorite bit of trivia about the show is that Dick Van Patten played the teenaged son in the TV show. If the name doesn't ring a bell, he was the father in "Eight Is Enough."

Jeez-oh I'm old.

Then again... I have an aunt and a couple of cousins named Dagmar... so maybe your school friend was just from a Norwegian family.

Jack Paar, coolest guy in the world. He told a joke using the term, "Water Closet" the British term for toilet, and the network censors cut him off. He got ticked and walked off the stage in the middle of the show.

He came back three weeks later, walked out on stage, and once the applause died down he said, "...as I was saying..." and he finished the joke.

Geezer,
I also remember Mama. Wasn't Irene Dunne playing the Mama role in the TV version? Not sure Maybe she just layed it in the film.

I had forgotten the way Jack Paar started the followup show. It was funny.

I seem to remember two guests he used to have on often. They were a married couple. He was a very temperamental writer.... did scripts for movies etc. He married a Japanese girl who had the deepest voice I ever heard on a woman. she said her father was a monk, but I think she meant a priest at a temple. They were allowed to be married so I dont think he was a monk. She used to sing a song containing all the names of the states in US. Strange couple.

Another Japanese actress also appeared on the show a lot. she was very sweet and was in the Jack Soo film Flower Drum song. I guess she was supposed to be a Chinese girl in that part. Good old Hollywood. She also was the housekeeper in the TV weekly show 'Eddie's Father' or something like that.

Gosh I hope I sleep tonight

Irene Dunne starred in the movie. The woman who played Mama in the TV show was named... Peggy something.

As for the couple you're talking about... dang! I can see them in my head, I remember them both vividly... but darned if I can remember their names. This is gonna drive me nuts all day. Jeez, I even remember them making multiple appearances on the Merv Griffin Show, and the Mike Douglas show.

I remember the audiences thought she was hilarious, and the husband, a tall thin guy, never seemed to be able to get a word in edgewise.

Miyoshi Umeki Mrs. Livingston.

Minor language break-through for me a couple of years ago: I always remembered the cute way she addressed Bill Bixby in that show. She called him "Mr. Eddie's Father".

I thought it was just that. A cute turn of phrase. But it hit me, a while ago, that that's a literal translation of exactly how she'd address him in Japanese.

Jeez, only 200 or so Japanese shows about parents being called Eddie's or Taro's, or Yumi's Papa, or Mama San, instead of their given name... and that nugget finally occured to me.

Language and computer skills. I sure am gifted.

Geezer,

If you can find anything more about Reiko I would be interested. I did a Google and atho there are many listings there is no information whatsoever. It all turnes into stuff about Jack Douglas. They apparently had two sons and lived in the middle west. Don't know if she is still alive. I suppose she could be. I'm still kicking. Dancing

Currently watching The Good Wife (amazing!), Game of Thrones, Don't Trust the b_tch in Apartment 23, Suburgatory, Modern Family, Cougar Town (I'm a minority I guess. Love this show), Happy Endings (favorite comedy), 2 broke girls, Revenge (insane!), Girls (crazy), religiously following Grey's Anatomy, and a ritual of Chelsea Lately every night.
