Takeshi Kitano receives France's highest cultural honor

On Tuesday, director Takeshi Kitano (63) was in Paris to receive the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, France's highest honor for arts and culture. The award was presented to him by Frédéric Mitterrand, the country's Minister of Culture and Communication, at the Fondation Cartier art museum.

Kitano is active as an actor, comedian, television personality, and many other things, but he is perhaps best known internationally as a filmmaker. He debuted in 1989 with "Violent Cop" ("Sono Otoko, Kyobo ni Tsuki") and went on to direct other critically acclaimed films such as "HANA-BI" in 1997 and "Zatoichi" in 2003.

A selection of Kitano's films will be screened at the Fondation Cartier museum from March 11 to June 21. The retrospective is part of a larger exhibition by Kitano, titled "Gosse de peintre," which will feature his artwork and other creations. The "Gosse de peintre" exhibition will run from March 11 to September 12.

In 1999, Kitano was conferred the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters, the lowest of the three ranks in the Order. Commander is the highest rank.

Never expected somebody like Kitano would get an award of the highest honour in France of all places. That's really cool and good for him.

"Outrage," the upcoming film by director Takeshi Kitano is going to be in the competition section at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival, which starts on May 12. This is Kitano's fourth time participating in the festival, though he has been in competition only once before, with "Kikujiro no Natsu" in 1999.

First announced last September, "Outrage" marks Kitano's return to the violent yakuza films he became best known for during the earlier part of his directing career. The film stars Kitano himself, along with Kippei Shiina, Ryo Kase, and Tomokazu Miura. Theatrical release in Japan is set for June 12, about three weeks after the awards are announced at Cannes.

Talento Takeshi Kitano and screenwriter Sou Kuramoto are teaming up for a TBS drama special that will air this August. Titled "Kikoku," the drama will star Kitano and feature a cast of big names, including Shun Oguri and Maki Horikita.

"Kikoku" is based on the 1955 short story "Saipan Kara Kita Ressha," written by the late author Hiroshi Muneta. Kuramoto originally adapted it last year for a theatrical version, but he is writing a new script for the drama.

The fantasy story starts when a unscheduled train arrives at Tokyo Station, carrying the ghosts of a group of soldiers who died honorably during World War II and dropping them off in present-day Tokyo. Kitano plays one of the soldiers, a private first class, who visits his younger sister, but he becomes violent upon witnessing her current misery.

Oguri plays a former musician who was sent to war, leaving behind his girlfriend Yoko (played by Horikita). When he returns to see her, 60 years have already passed. Kaoru Yachigusa will play the older Yoko.

Other cast members include Takashi Tsukamoto, Osamu Mukai, Yoichi Nukumizu, Yuya Endo, Katsuhisa Namase, ARATA, and Koji Ishizaka. TBS plans to air the drama on August 14, the day before the anniversary of Japan's surrender.

Takeshi Kitano planning "Outrage" sequel

It is being reported that director Takeshi Kitano has decided to work on a sequel to his most recent movie, "Outrage." The film opened on 155 screens in June, earning 4th place in its opening weekend and grossing 750 million yen so far. Kitano is apparently hoping to capitalize on that success with "Outrage 2," which is aimed for a fall 2011 release.

Early in his directing career, Kitano became known for his violent yakuza films such as "Violent Cop" and "Sonatine." He later took a turn with recent works like "Takeshis'" and "Kantoku Banzai!," but "Outrage" marked his return to yakuza films after roughly a decade.

Kitano spoke highly of the "Outrage" cast, saying that he felt he was able to create an interesting movie. However, he said that upon close analysis, it just barely made the grade in his mind, so he is aiming to make an even more interesting and enjoyable work.

I watched "Kikoku" on Tudou recently. It was well written although this story would be better off as a stage play. Full of soliloquys. Not meant to glorify the imperial army but if there is another title, I would call it "Closure". Closure to unfulfilled dreams, guilt,regrets, disappointments. The filming at Yasukuni Shrine brought mixed feelings. Awesome architecture but it is the most hatred symbol to many Asians. The wandering spirits bemoaned that nobody mourns for them.....yeah poor things.We get to mourn our dead on anniversaries, but they couldn't. But hey, if I were a survivor of the pacific war, I would yell,'Yeah, serve you right". This is one drama which will never be shown in my country.

Beat Takeshi to hold live in Shibuya

Beat Takeshi will hold a live tentatively called 'Beat Takeshi, Hobo, Tandoku LIVE' (Beat Takeshi, Almost, Solo LIVE) on October 27 at CBGK ShibuGeki!! in Shibuya, Tokyo.

The current line up is comprised of Beat Takeshi, Shimesaba Ataru, and Al Kitago. Tickets will go on sale on September 25 via Lawson Ticket. More details will be revealed through Office Kitano's official website and Al Kitago's Twitter.

Beat Takeshi, Yusuke Iseya, Tori Matsuzaka join cast of 'Gekijouban MOZU' movie

Beat Takeshi, Iseya Yusuke and Matsuzaka Tori will be joining the cast of new movie "Gekijouban MOZU" starring Nishijima Hidetoshi which is due to be shown in cinemas from 7 November 2015. The movie which is a sequel to the drama series "MOZU" jointly produced by TBS and WOWOW in 2014, will be set six months after the end of the drama. Iseya will play the role of a crime planner named Takayanagi who works together with an assassin Gondo played by Matsuzaka to launch a series of terror attacks such as the bombing of a high-rise building and the Vietnamese embassy while carrying out a criminal plan under the name of Daruma who is played by Beat Takeshi. Daruma was depicted as a mysterious presence who appears in the dreams of various people and it is even not confirmed whether he is aliving person. His identity and the mystery surrounding his presence will be revealed in the movie.

When asked about his reason for taking on the role of Daruma, Beat Takeshi revealed that MOZU's story resembles the American suspense dramas which he likes and that because Nishijima is his radio programme fan and they have a common interest in mathematics, he believes that it will be a very enjoyable experience to take part in this movie. As for Nishijima, he worked together with Beat Takeshi in his 2002 movie "DOLLS" and is looking forward to their collaboration again. Iseya commented that he thinks that he sees the role of Takayanagi as a very challenging role for him while Matsuzaka is very excited about taking on an evil role this time.

Filming of the drama began in late March but due to restrictions on bombing and car action scenes in Japan, the cast and crew had to go to the Philippines in April for a month for the filming. They did 4 bombing scenes at a big Manila market and used a total of 1,500 bullets during the period.

France Legion of Honor goes to film director Takeshi Kitano

The French government has named Japanese film director Takeshi Kitano as a recipient of the Legion of Honor his office said Tuesday.

Kitano, 69, will be named an Officier, the fourth ranked honor in the L'orde National de la Legion d'honneur at a ceremony in Paris next Tuesday.

"I am very surprised that I will be given such an honor, and I'm simply filled with joy," Kitano said in a statement, adding that he will devote himself to doing various jobs while preserving his own style.

Kitano, who is also a television celebrity, has twice been awarded France's Order of the Arts and Letters.

This guy definitely likes the blood and gore doesn't he?
