I love Odagiri Joe -- he does not take roles that are too conventional. Lover boy tpes, etc. He really excels at challenging roles with great stories.
I first saw him in Shinsengumi then I can never get enough of him. I have also seen Hei no Naka no Chuugakkou countless times and it never gets old. Odagiri + Watanabe-san. Just wow.
I found out that one of his favourite actors is Steve Buscemi. They do have some similarities in styles

Here's an interesting article about Joe. Since the fiasco of 'Kazoku no Uta' he refuses to take a leading role in a drama. As it is, he's got a supporting role in three (!) dramas this Spring, 'Arisu no Toge', 'Gokuaku Ganbo', and 'River's Edge Ookawabata Tanteisha'.
Odagiri was initially scheduled to be co-leads with Ueno Juri in the TBS Spring 2014 drama "Arisu no Toge". However, he asked to be lowered to a supporting role. According to an entertainment agency's insider, his decision was largely due to the trauma he suffered in 2012 when his drama "Kazoku no Uta" registered very low ratings and had to be shortened by three episodes. Since then, Odagiri would only take on leading roles if they are in movies or late-night dramas.
In actual fact, "Arisu no Toge" got off to a pretty good start at 14.2%. Although it dropped to 11.9% for its second episode, that was actually a normal trend because most dramas would suffer a fall in ratings in the second episode and anything between two and three percent was acceptable. However, there is still a likelihood that the drama might head into single-digit territory if things do not pick up from the third episode onwards. As such, no matter what happens to this drama, Odagiri would not be blamed for the results so in this sense, his choice to turn down the leading role is a smart move.
Although Odagiri is not really the type of actor who shines in supporting roles, if the drama in which he plays a supporting role does well, he can earn some credit in having contributed to its success. On the other hand, if the drama becomes a flop, he won't be liable for it. In the current TV drama landscape where it's extremely difficult to get high ratings, Odagiri's choice would allow him to concentrate on his acting rather than be affected by the movement of the drama's ratings. In a way, the timing of his choice would be appropriate to prolong the length of his career.

Odagiri Joe to star in movie "Ernesto" to be released this Fall
Odagiri Joe will be appearing in the new movie "Ernesto" directed by Sakamoto Junji which is due to be shown in cinemas next autumn. The movie which is a collaboration by Japan and Cuba for the first time in 48 years, features Odagiri as the Bolivian-Japanese doctor Ernesto Freddy Maemura who fought alongside with revolutionist Che Guevara and died at the young age of 25. As the entire movie is in Spanish, Odagiri spent 6 months to learn the language and had to reduce his weight by 12kg for the filming. This being his 14th movie shot overseas, Odagiri said that he took on the role precisely because it was tough and something which he had never attempted before.
Odagiri had to fly more than 15 hours over 12,500km in order to get to Cuba's capital Havana for the filming. On the set, instructions were all in Spanish. Although the filming was to start from 3 September, Odagiri flew to Havana ahead of schedule on 15 August so as to get used to the environment. Prior to the filming, he had to keep his hair long for three months and not cut his nails for two months so as to look like a revolutionist. Subsequently, as the filming moved on to the scenes featuring his character's younger days, he had to eat a lot of sweet stuff to regain the weight he lost.
