1) Go to Start | Run...
2) Type in "notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" then click OK.
3) On the very bottom (right underneath 127.0.0.1 localhost), add:
207.44.218.55 jdorama.com
207.44.218.55 www.jdorama.com
then save the hosts document. |
Not geeky enough I guess. But I just followed what you said and saved it. So I hope it works now! Thanks.
Oh yeah, and I'm back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, it's best to undo that change now that jdorama's DNS has been fixed. It was only a temporary workaround while the ISP had fudged up the nameservers.
But you could save the file somewhere so you can use it again if this problem reappears.
If you don't undo the hosts file change, it's like hardcoding the jdorama site's IP address on your computer. That IP could possibly change (usually a rare thing to happen), and if you maintained the modified hosts file, then you'd be shut out from the site again

Anyway, welcome back.

You should've seen it... The last day and a half, only Vibius and I were on. It was very unusual to see only two people on-line.

Hey Groink. How come only some people (like you and Vibius) were able to get on? You guys must have some secret powers huh?!
Don't mind me asking, it's just that I don't catch all this computer stuffs. _________________

Yeah, we coulda taken over!
I still don't understand what the ISP was doing ... it was just like they deleted the zones for a day and half, and now they are back. I'm not sure, but I don't think they re-IP'd the nameservers ...
I still think jdorama ought to get another secondary somewhere.

Well, I've done a little DNS administration in the past, so when I had problems reaching jdorama, I realized that it was a DNS problem. For some reason, my computer wasn't able to look up the IP address for jdorama.com.
So, since I run a web proxy, I looked in my proxy logs, found the last IP address that jdorama.com resolved to, and created a temporary zone in my DNS server to return that address for hosts in the jdorama.com domain. I did this because I have several computers, but it would be just the same if I had used Groink's method of modifying the hosts file on each of my computers.
Anyway, in short, since the normal DNS servers had been screwed up by the ISP, I just temporarily "hardcoded" the IP address for jdorama.com on my computers. So that let me access the site.

Think I understand a sentence or two!
So, the site should be alright from now then?! _________________

Well, I dunno about that. I have serious doubts about this ISP at this point. For now things seem ok, but this ISP could easily fudge it up again for all I know. I just don't understand why they could have screwed things up so bad, and why they didn't fix it immediately.
There is a solution to prevent this from happening in the future, and that is to add more secondary nameservers for the jdorama domain. But only Genma can do that, because it has to be done by the person who owns the domain. I tried to send him a message about all that ... but I know he's away being busy in France.

Aw man, that's kind of kooky right there.
So basically, it's all human error then?

Yeah, and he'll be gone for a couple of months or so. So I hope this site can hold up until he comes back.
I felt really weird not being able to come here during my days off.
*sigh* Oh wells, at least I had a pretty productive weekend. Cleaning every nook and cranny of the house, get all my 'ish' together. Come to think of it.......What a crappy weekend I had! _________________

Well, it looks that way from where I'm sitting. I don't really have all the facts, though. I think Groink actually talked to them, so he might know what they did wrong. But this kind of error was both preventable and easy to fix, and yet they let it go on about 2 days. That kind of indicates they are boneheads.

I think it'll be ok, unless the ISP has more problems during this changeover they are doing.
If this same problem happens again, you can always try adding jdorama's IP address to your host file, like Groink explained.

Man, I hope those boneheads don't screw things up again.
Heh, now I'm reminded of "Zoolander", when they were trying to open the computer! Damn monkeys!

Sounds good. Hopefully a bonehead like me will be able to do it correctly if worse comes to worst. _________________
