|
|
Must sees (in the following order): AND IF YOU CONSIDER PLOT DESCRIPTIONS AS "SPOILERS," THEN THE FOLLOWING K-FILM DESCRIPTIONS CONTAINS SPOILERS. "CLOSE YOUR EYES" TIME.
1) JSA (Joint Security Area) -- great A Few Good Men- or Jubaku-type gripping thriller that has to do with an incident between the respective guards on the S. Korean and N. Korean sites around the two Koreas' Joint Security Area. Highly criticized by those operatives and/or soldiers who have lived the real thing, but, as a film in the Korean catalog, absolutely not to be missed. There's an affordable DVD version from the Tai Seng label that includes the entire film (in other words, no cuts).
2) Shiri -- S. Korean cinema's answer to Die Hard and Michael Mann's Heat. Contains a plot that also features S. and N. Korean issues. There's something I'm still coming to terms with regarding the assassin. Private mail me if you wish to discuss further. This film scares Hollywood as it shows other countries can make the "action movie" just as good (if not better) than Hollywood can. Currently on Columbia/Tri-Star DVD.
3) Musa -- groundbreaking. If I'm not mistaken, released in S. Korea only a few days before 09/11/01. Musa is a South Korean-based film concerning the trials and tribulations of a Korean envoy to China in the 14th century.
Not to be missed if you liked Braveheart, the game Age of Warriors (I hope I got the name right), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Ran. Also, the fight scenes actually made me wonder how the Korean fighters would fair on a battlefield in Middle Earth. Currently, it's accessible via Tai Seng DVD.
Oh, by the way, the film features Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's Zhang Ziyi who, as evinced by her work in this film, still knows how to play the spoiled débutante character.
4) 2009 Lost Memories -- a sci-fi'/time-travelin' piece that takes place in a Korea following a World War II where the U.S. and Japan were allies. Features S. Korean actor Dong Jang Gun and Japanese actor Toru Nakamura. 2009 Lost Memories is highly criticized for being boring. I thought it was one of the best time-travelling movies ever made (and, I think the key to making an effective time-travelling based story is to not be constrained by Hollywood's playbook on temporal rift storytelling; because I thought Returner was pretty good too). Provides a chilling lesson if you're even slightly interested in the history of the East Asian world.
5) Memories of Murder -- wickedly great film about two detectives' efforts toward finding a serial killer in a small town during the dark history of 1980s S. Korea. Based on a true story.
Let us know when you've seen those . . . then I'll post some more. The aforementioned films are essential before watching anything else.

Whoah, hahah, you had to ask. Well, Sex is Zero is funny in its shocking scenes . . . and we ain't talkin' "shocking" in the vein of The Silence of the Lambs or Fatal Attraction or Saving Private Ryan. Tell you something . . . stuff like the uncensored (lemme repeat that, uncensored) American Pie movies (yes, plural, again, to clarify) can't even compare to the ghastly bodily fluid-ness that Sex is Zero offers.
I'll give two SPOILERS to tell you just how gross this film is:
In one scene, a gal just pukes out everything she has after drinking alcohol 1/2 the night then . . . proceeds to French kiss a guy, yes, w/out wiping her mouth first.
A guy "does" a blow-up doll convincingly.
SPOILERS OVER
And that ain't even 1/2 of the antics -- that'd make a prisoner blush -- in this film.
Also . . . strangely, the mood turns serious for the main female character. PM me if you need to know why, kinda' serious her condition. K-films have a habit of turning to crude humor sometimes, but, when it's funny, it's funny.
