Oscars are a TV ratings dud

The Oscars are a ratings dud. Nielsen Media Research says preliminary ratings for the 80th annual Academy Awards telecast are 14 percent lower than the least-watched ceremony ever.

Nielsen said Monday that overnight ratings are also 21 percent lower than last year, when "The Departed" was named best picture.

The least-watched Oscars ceremony ever was in 2003, when there were 33 million viewers.

Nielsen has no estimate yet on how many people watched Sunday night, but based on ratings from the nation's biggest markets, the Oscars will be hard-pressed to avoid an ignominious record.

The show had a 21.9 rating and 33 share.

Personally, I thought "There Will Be Blood" was slightly better than "No Country for Old Men," but they're both good movies. Persepolis should've won best animation though. I'm tired of the Pixar princess.

The only reason I watched was for John Steward, but he still wasn't as funny as the Daily Show.

No Country looks interesting. I might actually rent it. Considering I haven't watch Spiderman 3 yet...

Probably he wasn't funny because, they had a week to write everything and it's the oscars. They are uptight and P.C.

No Country is a good movie. Watch it!

I'm not at all surprised at the ratings. Why would people want to sit through the entire thing when they can just watch the parts they want to see online? Or read about it later? Or see the highlights on an entertainment show?

I wanted to watch the Oscars this year, but I wasn't dying to, and in the end decided to spend my time watching a drama.

You're not missing much with Spiderman 3, unless you're a huge Marvel comics fan.

'No Country' was good, but not Best Picture worthy IMO. I'm still surprised so many critics like it that much.

I didn't realize that Okuribito (Departures) was such a international until i realized that Ryko Hirosue was at the oscars last night.

Mysterious Skeletonized Oscar Statue Found at Runyon Canyon

A day after they appeared, the skeleton Oscar statues are going away

Runyon Canyon kicked off its bizarro-Oscar season this week.

Atop the west ridgeline, hikers spotted a skeletonized Oscar statue, losanjealous.com first reported. The statue is about 6 feet tall, including its pedestal.

"'Beauty is one snip away' -D*Face," reads the caption.

Hikers stopped for a picture with the statue Thursday afternoon.


Runyon wasn't the only location to receive an award. A Mel's Drive-In Hollywood manager, who asked only to be identified as Sam, told NBCLA that a similar statue has been found in the restaurant's parking lot.

"We don't know what it is," said Sam. "It's nothing that anyone here did."

That statue's caption read, "Beauty is skin deep."

The statues' creator has yet to be identified. Although we do have an e-mail in to a British street artist who works under the moniker D*Face. He has yet to reply.

While we patiently await a reply, Josh Dickey of The Wrap found a source to confirm the origins:

They are the work of a U.K.-based artist who goes by D*Face, said a person with knowledge of the plot to emplace the statues on Thursday morning. The 6- to 7-foot figures, made of a painted resin, were crafted in the United Kingdom and shipped here, the person said.

Unfortunately for art lovers who appreciate statements on vanity, the Runyon and Mel's statues have been removed. The Runyon statue was removed Thursday evening, according to The Wrap.
