I'm a huge fan of Japanese Cop Dramas of the 70s & 80s like "Taiyo Ni Hoero" (Howl at the Sun), "Seibu Keisastu" (Western Police), "G-Men '75", "Playgirl" and "Tokusou Saizensen" (Frontline Investigation). These shows used to dominate the Japanese airwaves way back when but now it seems like there's no shows of this type anymore. The recent "Unfair" series with Shinohara Ryoko was the closest thing I've seen but it was more an action/mystery. I don't think I can recall of any really good cop show within the last ten years with perhaps the exception of "Odoru Dai Sosasen" and "Keitai Deka - Zenigata Mai".

Ahhhh true say. But to be honest, I'm guessing there's just no demand for it. Writers cater to their audience. If there is no audience for this genre, why write it?

if you watch enough TV you'll realize that story lines are cyclical. Comedy will rule one decade and serious drama will rule the next. It'll come back at some point.

Unfortunately, it seem reality TV is bucking the trend and sticking around lonnger than it needs to be.

Amen to that. Grumble

Also, if you only watch subbed drama, you way miss a few good ones. A lot of fan subs groups are female only and they prefer working on stuff with Yamapi, Jun, Kame and the rest. Not necessarily the best ones out there. Sad

There was P.S. Rashoumon last fall IIRC. I don't know if it's good tho.

I saw another crime drama Sono Otoko, Fuku-Shochou. I just don't know if it's really a crime drama or a comedy like Kochira Hon Ikegami Sho. =T

I really liked Furuhata Ninzaburo, but that series is more in the vein of Columbo rather than a traditional hardboiled cop drama.
Odoru Daisosassen is one of the best dorama I have seen--great ensemble cast, very much character driven, and offering sharp insight into the hierarchical system prevalent in Japan.
Although I haven't seen it, I have read that Hagure Keiji, which began airing in 1988 and only just finished its run last year, is supposed to be a pretty good detective series. I really would like to view some episodes of that; I know several of the seasons aired on KIKU in Hawaii, so if any local boy or gal recorded it, I'd sure appreciate a pm.

How about Aibou? It looks promising but I can't get my hands on the entire series.

And there's also Keishicho Sousa Ikka 9 Gakari Season 2 on TV Asahi this spring season but I don't see any raws.

Just wanted to see if there were any old school 70s-80s "J-Deka" (Japanese Detective/Police Story) fans?

I'm a huge fan of shows like Seibu Keisatsu/x@ (AKA Western Police), Taiyo Ni Hoerou/zɂق!! (Howl at the Sun); Tokusou Saizensen/{őO (Front Line Special Investigation), G-Men '75 and the all female cop shows like Playgirl/vCK[ and The Supergal/UEX[p[K[.

Before the JDorama boom of the 80s and 90s, these were the ones to watch for gritty action, human drama and crime suspense.

While the majority of fans of these shows are older, younger fans like myself have been catching up on these cools shows via rebroadcasts on Toei Channel and Fami-Geki as well as special DVD Memorial Box Sets.

Any other fans of these show?
