Hi all,
so I have a rather eunique problem. I am completely blind and trying to use Japanese dramas to improve my listening proficiency at the language, but since I am unable to read the subtitles, I have a lot of trouble following what is going on. The dialogue is so fast it is hard for me to pick up new vocabulary and such, so I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to get the text from the subtitles into a simple text file in .docx .rtf or .txt formats. My plan is to listen to the drama for around 5 minutes, then read over the subtitles and listen again, so as to get more out of each drama. I have been able to find lots of dramas on youtube, but am not sure which ones are any good, so I'll take whatever recommendations you guys might have. I know this is a long shot but thought it would be worth a try.

Using JAWS or NVDA. If you happen to have an iPad then try turning on accessibility and let the iPad read a web page to you. (Make sure you know beforehand how to turn it off.) I've toyed with this stuff because I maintain a web page, although I couldn't imagine that any blind person would ever want to read the blog of a screen actress. Now I can.

To answer the question. The D-Addicts subtitle index lists subtitles made for drama series for several languages. Those subtitle files are usually in the SRT format, which is just a text file you can hopefully read.

If you are hoping to save English subtitles into text files, any .srt subtitle files from d-addicts can be easily converted into .txt files. You only need to open the .srt files and save as .txt files. Not sure if I understood you correctly.

For types of drama with slower dialogue, I think try to avoid comedy or detective or dramas with lot of people, especially young people. Dramas dealing with autism may be good in this regard, or romance. For drama recommendation, you need to tell us what you like so we can narrow the choices down. There is a specific thread for this:
