@Terramax

Are you using the Windows language bar? If you right click on it select "Additional icons in taskbar". When you switch to Japanese if you click on the icon that looks like a "A" you can change from Hiragana and Katakana and Direct Input.

I've turned that on but no 'A' appears. I would show you a picture screenshot of what the bar looks like, but I don't know how to upload pictures from my computer onto forums?[/list]

You can use imageshack. http://www.imageshack.us/

That's what my language bar looks like. What I do.

1. Click in the window or text box I want Japanese text. (If I go back to another program, it'll change back to English.

2. Click on the EN and change it to JP.

3. Click on the A (first on the left) and change it to Hiragana. My conversion mode (2nd icon) is set to General.

Hopefully, if you can see it, this is what my bar looks like.

I can't find the 'A' people talk about.

You can do 2 things.

1. Right-click on the JP and check "Additional Icons in taskbar"

or

2. Right-click on the JP and click on "Restore the language bar"

The patch will only works for Office XP and it looks like it's made for OS older than Windows 2000. (98, ME...)

If you want to type in Japanese, you'll need the XP CD, because the tools aren't install by default. Since it says you need 250mb to install them, I don't think you'll be able to download it somewhere.

You should ask the place where you bought your PC to give you the CD. If they don't want to, report them to Microsoft. mwahaha

You can also download another software like JWPce to type in JP.

The link is just a text editor for Windows. It can allow you to type in Japanese without having the language toolbar. As for the Japanese version of XP, it's the samething as the English version, but with everything written in Japanese.

ok, this is strange. I did everything again on my laptop (secondary computer) and everything works out fine. My settings are all the same as yours (including the two different versions). I don't understand how it can do it for one of my pcs but not the other.

Is there anyway I can uninstall all this language info and start all over again from scratch?

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I figured it out somehow... I don't know how, but it's working now. I check 'Japanese' and wait about 30 seconds and then it suddenly changes... strange, thanks for the help.

~jj[qiՂ instead of a bunch of sqaures? thx in advance.

Likely not, I don't think characters are allowed in filenames on CDs. It's not part of the CD standard, if I recall.

Edit: I found this: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=149416. It may work, but it involves some preparation, (*read* I haven't tried this, I always convert to letters before burning).

Thanks, I'll try this. I gave up on burning DVDs with Unicode a long time ago after making too many coasters. Sad

I don't think it's possible without the disc. IIRC, it's one of the big .cab files. Sad
