@Terramax
Are you using the Windows language bar? If you right click on it select "Additional icons in taskbar". When you switch to Japanese if you click on the icon that looks like a "A" you can change from Hiragana and Katakana and Direct Input.
I've turned that on but no 'A' appears. I would show you a picture screenshot of what the bar looks like, but I don't know how to upload pictures from my computer onto forums?[/list]

The patch will only works for Office XP and it looks like it's made for OS older than Windows 2000. (98, ME...)
If you want to type in Japanese, you'll need the XP CD, because the tools aren't install by default. Since it says you need 250mb to install them, I don't think you'll be able to download it somewhere.
You should ask the place where you bought your PC to give you the CD. If they don't want to, report them to Microsoft.
thanks a lot..i think i'll try that link because i'm too lazy to ask my school.... how does the xp japanese compare to www.phsysics.ucla one? is it a lot better? ease of use?

The link is just a text editor for Windows. It can allow you to type in Japanese without having the language toolbar. As for the Japanese version of XP, it's the samething as the English version, but with everything written in Japanese.
ok, this is strange. I did everything again on my laptop (secondary computer) and everything works out fine. My settings are all the same as yours (including the two different versions). I don't understand how it can do it for one of my pcs but not the other.
Is there anyway I can uninstall all this language info and start all over again from scratch?
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I figured it out somehow... I don't know how, but it's working now. I check 'Japanese' and wait about 30 seconds and then it suddenly changes... strange, thanks for the help.

Likely not, I don't think characters are allowed in filenames on CDs. It's not part of the CD standard, if I recall.
