With Thanksgiving fast approaching, I found myself wondering gdo they celebrate Thanksgiving in Japan?h My immediate answer was gprobably noth (as Thanksgiving is one of the few distinctly American holidays we have), but, as Japan has embraced the commercial side of Christmas and Halloween in Japan is becoming more popular every year, I thought that it wouldnft hurt to do some research.
Unsurprisingly, it turns out that our Thanksgiving holiday is gjust another dayh in Japan. While some expats will get together to celebrate the day together (or, in some cases, celebrate it on the weekend when it doesnft interfere with work or school), Japanese individuals do not partake in celebrating the American Thanksgiving holiday in November.
However, that doesnft mean that Japan does not have an gequivalenth to Thanksgiving, one which happens to fall very close (date-wise) to our own Thanksgiving Holiday.
Called Kinrō kansha no hi, the name translates to gLabor Thanksgiving Day,h and is celebrated every year in Japan on November 23rd.
As hard work and a strong work ethic is one of the most valued attributes in Japan (sometimes, even at a high cost to its individuals), it is not surprising that they chose to set aside a day to commemorate labor and production, and to thank one another for their hard work.
While the Labor Thanksgiving Holiday may seem modern (officially added to the Japanese calendar shortly after WWII), it actually has its roots in Niiname-sai–the harvest festival–which has been a long-standing tradition in Japan for centuries.
You wonft find any turkey dinners to celebrate the Labor Thanksgiving Holiday in Japan, but you will find various festivals, and oftentimes people will publicly thank civil servants, with children often giving police officers artwork as gifts.

Interesting. They should have big hunks of turkey on skewers served yakitori style.

We ate little hens and skipped the gravy.
Seriously though. On this day of thanksgiving I want to say to all my pals here at Jdorama that I really appreciate all the fun and concern and simply having a spot in the world to always find some kind of intelligent conversation.
And you all know who I am talking about.

So thanks. You are cherished.
Happy Thanksgiving to all my American peeps! _________________
