Today's episode of "Japanology Plus" was about fermented foods. Naturally they talked about natto. The narrator said natto has a "distinctive aroma". So the next time I meet someone that stinks I'll say, "Excuse me, did you know you have a distinctive aroma?"

My TV conked out today and I discovered something interesting. I can live without TV. I cannot live without the internet.

Did anyone else know that the World Championships of Track and Field just concluded its two-week competition in Beijing? NBC devoted a scant few hours of weekend programming on it; some obscure cable channel that I don't have provided the bulk of coverage during the week.

From what I saw on TV and the internet, it was a terrific competition. Unfortunately track and field has become all but forgotten, except during the summer Olympics. I am old enough to remember when it and boxing were two of the most heavily covered and popular sports worldwide.

Not anymore. And not for awhile now.

^ I remember some of those US/USSR track meets. Kind of a mini-Cold War. Events like shot put and javelin you had to wonder about some of those Russian "women". Confused

Is that what the video of the cameraman on the segway, hitting the runner, was from? I think that's the only track & field thing I've seen in a while and that was on the internet.

The US/USSR meets were great competitions. Wide World of Sports used to cover them back in the early 60's. The NCAA outdoor track and field championships were also extensively covered. And the World Championships, which began in 1983, received a lot of TV coverage for a number of years.

The Soviets of course cheated, but probably the East Germans had the best doping system going. Other Eastern bloc countries like Poland and Czechoslovakia also were deep into using illegal PEDs. And USA competitors were also guilty as well; the only difference was that our doping wasn't state sponsored. The female athletes benefitted the most. It's not a coincidence that on the women's side, the world records for the 100, 200, 400, and 800 meters, the heptathlon, the shot put, and discuss have all stood since the 1980's when doping was uncontrolled.

Hello you lot. How's things in JDorama land?

I'm heading back to Europe for a holiday in a few weeks. My oldest daughter is currently living in London and me, mrs AD and youngest daughter are going to visit, and travel around a bit at the same time.

Actually that's not quite true - oldest daughter is here until Monday night, when she flies back. Mrs AD's mum passed away on Wednesday. The funeral is on Monday morning.

It's been a long time coming unfortunately so it wasn't a shock. Still sad though.

Anime Son is still studying music. He took a couple of years off study to work, but he's back into it again.

Apologies for the double post. I can't work out how to multi quote on my iPad Doh!

Haha! No, he is actually earning money instead of borrowing from us. Makes a nice change.
