Perhaps this is too simple, but why not focus on katakana until you've mastered it, and then move on to hiragana, and then ...

here's a site for memorising katakana by associating pictures. i managed to memorize them in a few days time.

http://learn-japanese-online.com/introduction1.html

but i recommend hiragana first, as katakana is less used (only on foreign words etc.).

i forgot the site for hiragana. i'll post it later.

There is a RPG game that incorporates katakana and hiragana in the game. My friends played it for about a week and learned all of the katakana, hiragana, and even alot of Kanji! Id play this game if i had more time (perhaps on vacation). I hear this game really really works

Here is the link

i, however, think katakana is really needed.. as katakana is being used more and more often in japanese nowadays.. it will be good to read katakana fast.. it's like when i started learning, i put too much emphasis on hiragana and now i'm trying to work hard on my katakana.. for me, kanji isn't a worry as i know chinese so it's easier.. since hiragana is taught to toddlers in jpn, i think it is essential to learn hiragana first. Even in a lot of books, if there is katakana and/or kanji written, there is hiragana that goes long with the katakana/kanji. Hiragana have a table/chart.(BTW, the chart reads from right to left, starting from AAB@Try to master this and it should get easier as you go along, IMHO.

Sorry,i repeat the same topic just to gain more attraction, anywa thx to those posted on "how to type kanji if i dun hav chinese star"

i kinda understand that typing japanese word is how are we typing chinese word,we need to master the correct spelling of romanji,it is not the matter of prounouncation. Please do correct me if i made any error in my statement to prevent me from repeating the mistake.

However,i still dun get it!!!!!!!!!! ARGH!!!!!! Any kind soul who is free enough to visit this site ,the correct spelling of thank you in romanji is "arigatou",other than that,it won't come out the result,is it? (please answer yes or no) http://www.animelab.com/anime.manga/dictionary/?word=arigatou&type=romanji&search=Normal

Look,on the left side is kanji,on the right is kana/hiragana,which is an alien word to me. I'm a chinese and my primary language is mandarin, though romanji is much more easier to write not understand!! A L the 1st one is hiragana, the 2nd one is kanji,i remember someone told me that i should choose hiragana rather than hiragana, and when i input japanese words, the 1st one is most probably hiragana, the 2nd one is most likely to be kanji,AGREE??? please tell me the correct one.

I'm still very confuse,i did some testing on the website, whenever i input the romanji,it came out that 1 or 2 words different

Yes, the characters that look simple are kana(hiragana and katakana). The ones with a ridiculous amount of strokes are kanji.

the way i differentiate between kata and hira is the curve of the stroke. If its curvy, its hiragana.

The easiest thing to do is simply learn hiragana and katakana. You should be able to do it in about 2 or 3 weeks.

Only kanji has meaning on its own. Hiragana and katakana have no meaning on their own, thus it's like the english alphabet. You can learn to read it quite easily but to understand words made by them is a different story altogether...

since you've mentioned that you're a chinese...you'll have no problem understanding kanjis....since japanese borrowed the kanjis characters from the chinese......

agree.....whether to use kanji or kana that depends on the word...if the word has japanese root(didn't borrowed from any other language...then hiragana is used...thus its 肪Ƃ..not L....

sometimes there are some words that are spelled differently(different kanji) but have same pronunciation....
eg:F.......v...z...d

hope that helps.... Big Grin

As far as I can see, eternal is asking for how to differentiate kanji from kana. Not hiragana from katakana. So you would please do something about that big picture of yours, lovelessemotion? Load time is killing me. Sad

Why not get a better/faster connection?

-Just a suggestion.

As far as I'm concerned, I have "stinkin'/slow dial-up" but I don't complain about others' avatars or sigs. It's not anyone else's fault but my own if the pic(s) take time ("centuries") to load.

Don't be mistaken, I'm not trying to pick on you or anything. But Loveless is not the only one with a big signature like that.
