Synopsis:
A prize-winning writer, Leiko(NAKATANI Miki), moves to a quiet sub-urban house to finish up her new novel with a help from the editor. That night while sleeping, she sees a man in a storage room transporting an object wrapped in cloth. She soon finds out that he is a renowned archaeologist, Professor Yoshioka(TOYOKAWA Etsushi), researching ancient mummies, and that object was a recently discovered mummy. Working late on her book, Leiko witneses a ghost and finds out that her room once belonged to a woman who had been misssing for a while. This brings unexplainable fear to Leiko as she starts to uncover more stories from the past.

It's listed as the Director's cut, the video quality is superb, and the English subs are very good.

Quick note, probably too late... watch Keizoku the series before watching the specials or the movie (Beautiful Dreamer).

There are so many inside jokes, and continued plot lines that I think you'd miss half the fun if the first thing you saw was the special.

An English subbed version of Keizoku is currently the series of the week at d-addicts. The picture isn't great because it comes off a vcd copy. But the subs are good.

There was some talk about someone taking the subs from the copy being offered, and attaching them to a quality DVD copy... but it's been a couple of months, and nothing's happened yet, so who knows.

In the evening I'm at the Brazilian Embassy's official residence in Yoyogi-Uehara, where Sakamoto Ryuichi and Paula and Jacques Morelenbaum give an 'invitations only' concert. It's a promotion for their album "Casa," which was recorded at the home of Antonio Carlos Jobim, and contains covers of his compositions. Jobim's "Wave" is among my Top 3 albums, and I really enjoy the trio's homage to this great artist.

The complex is located in a high class residential area, and this event offers the rare pleasure to hear Sakamoto play Jobim, while holding a cocktail in one hand and marvelling at the spaceous mid-century style residence. At this occasion I'm meeting kimono-dressed Nakatani Miki, whom I haven't seen for a long time. At first I mistakenly took her for an elder lady who resembles Nakatani, since she was just too perfectly styled. She says she's listening to "Casa" every day, and when I ask her how she's doing recently, she answers wittily, "no shootings at the moment - I'm jobless!"


Miki turned 30 last week...

Re: movies over TV. In movies, the money is better, the opportunity to do better work is there, and the schedule is a lot easier to live with.

And remember, Japanese actors and actresses don't get much credit for doing Japanese TV.

When Koyuki got the role in "Last Samurai" she was referred to as a "newcomer". A model turned actress who did a suprizingly good job for someone with so little experience.

Of course, she'd had major roles in a dozen TV series before getting the movie, but in the minds of film people, that just didn't count.

And yeah, I bring that one up because Japanese Actors and Actresses want to do movies outside of Japan. HK, Korea, Hollywood. The Japanese studios and corporations simply don't pump the money into the Japanese film industry the way they do TV and anime. So the actors with ambition have to hope they hook on outside the country.

Being a TV star in Japan is probably a very good life. But being a big time movie star is the brass ring.

I'm working on pure memory (never a good idea) here, but I believe it was called "Life and Youth in Takarazuka".

It starred Miki, Ryoko, Yoshino Kimura, and Norika.

I remember seeing it on sale on ebay once but it didn't have subs so I didn't grab it in time.

As I recall, it was a 4 part special, focusing on each of the girls as they grew up in the Cabaret, the war years, and how they survived, and then what happened to them after.

Someone I traded with a ways back sent me this program and I was pretty elated, only to find that it was incomplete... I'll probably transfer it to disc anyways, just for archival purposes...
